A popular story is that a doctor at the United States Department of Agriculture Research in Beltsville was attempting to mix human and animal DNA. Some say he was responsible for the murder of 14 hikers in 1962, whom he allegedly dismembered with supernatural screams.

Maryland folklore expert Mark Opsnik first came across the Goatman legend as a child, growing up he learned about the legend and went on "Goatman hunts" with his friends.

Edwards Aprils is not the only person who claims to have encountered Gottman. Gottman had a general location at three different locations in Prince George's County, a forest behind St. Mark the Evangelist Middle School in Hyattsville, under the "Cry Baby" Bridge in Bowie, and in College Park.
