स्थानेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर, हरियाणा के कुरुक्षेत्र जिले के थानेसर शहर में स्थित एक प्राचीन हिन्दू मन्दिर है। यह मंदिर भगवान शिव का समर्पित है और कुरुक्षेत्र के प्राचीन मंदिरों में से एक है। स्थानेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर के नाम पर ही इस जगह का नाम ‘थानेश्वर’ अथवा ‘स्थानेश्वर’ पड़ा। ऐसी मान्यता भी है कि भगवान शिव की शिवलिंग के रुप में पहली बार पूजा इसी स्थान पर हुई थी इसलिए कुरुक्षेत्र की तीर्थ यात्रा इस मंदिर की यात्रा के बिना पूरी नही मानी जाती है। इस मंदिर के सामने एक छोटा सा कुंड है। 

स्थनेश्वर महादेव मंदिर 5000 साल से भी ज़्यादा पुराना है। इसका पौराणिक और ऐतिहासिक महत्व है। पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार, भगवान ब्रह्मा ने भगवान शिव का पहला लिंग यहीं रखा था और इसलिए, उनकी पूजा सबसे पहले इसी मंदिर में की गई थी। भगवान शिव को समर्पित हिंदू त्योहार महाशिवरात्रि इस मंदिर में धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है। 

महाभारत के युद्ध में जीत के लिए भगवान शिव का आशीर्वाद लेने के लिए भगवान कृष्ण के साथ पांडव इस मंदिर में आए थे। इस मंदिर में आए बिना कुरुक्षेत्र की कोई भी तीर्थयात्रा अधूरी मानी जाती है। मंदिर के परिसर में एक सुंदर तालाब है और लोगों का मानना ​​है कि इसके पवित्र जल में बहुत ज़्यादा उपचार करने की शक्ति है। 

 तालाब के बीच में एक पत्थर की पटिया पर आराम करती भगवान शिव की एक बड़ी नीली सुंदर मूर्ति खड़ी है। आस-पास के शहरों से लोग, जो विभिन्न बीमारियों से पीड़ित हैं, ठीक होने की उम्मीद में इस मंदिर में स्नान करने आते हैं। अतीत में, राजा बान का कुष्ठ रोग इस पवित्र जल में डुबकी लगाने से ठीक हो गया था। गुरु तेग बहादुर सिंह, जो 9वें सिख गुरु थे, भी इस मंदिर में रुके थे, यही कारण है कि इस मंदिर के बगल में एक सिख गुरुद्वारा बनाया गया था।

मंदिर के पुजारी महंत रोशनपुरी के अनुसार इस मंदिर पर कालांतर में 24 आक्रमण हुए हैं, जिनमें से 22 आक्रमण मुगलों द्वारा किए गए हैं। मोहम्मद गजनी ने यहां पर आक्रमण किया और भगवान नटराज की एक बेशकीमती मूर्ति यहां से अपने साथ ले गया।

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Thanesar town of Kurukshetra district of Haryana. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the ancient temples of Kurukshetra. The name of this place was 'Thaneshwar' or 'Sthaneshwar' after the name of Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple. There is also a belief that Lord Shiva was first worshipped in the form of Shivalinga at this place, so the pilgrimage to Kurukshetra is not considered complete without visiting this temple. There is a small pond in front of this temple.

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple is more than 5000 years old. It has mythological and historical importance. According to mythology, Lord Brahma placed the first linga of Lord Shiva here and hence, he was first worshipped in this temple. Mahashivratri, a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, is celebrated with great pomp in this temple.

The Pandavas along with Lord Krishna came to this temple to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for victory in the war of Mahabharata. Any pilgrimage to Kurukshetra is considered incomplete without visiting this temple. There is a beautiful pond in the temple premises and people believe that its holy water has immense healing powers.

In the middle of the pond stands a big blue beautiful statue of Lord Shiva resting on a stone slab. People from nearby towns, who are suffering from various diseases, come to bathe in this temple in the hope of getting cured. In the past, King Ban's leprosy was cured by taking a dip in this holy water. Guru Tegh Bahadur Singh, who was the 9th Sikh Guru, also stayed at this temple, which is why a Sikh Gurudwara was built next to this temple.

According to Mahant Roshanpuri, the priest of the temple, this temple has been invaded 24 times over, out of which 22 were by the Mughals. Mohammad Ghazni invaded here and took away a priceless idol of Lord Nataraja from here.
