झारखंड का राजकीय/राज्य पक्षी

"कोयल (Cuckoo)" को झारखण्ड का राजकीय पक्षी कहा जाता है। कोयल का वैज्ञानिक नाम "यूडाइनेमिस स्कोलोपेकस (eudainemis scolopecus)" है। यह सर्वाहारी जीवों की श्रेणी वाला पक्षी है। बसंत ऋतू के समय कोयल कूकती है। इस कोयल की एक बहुत ही विचित्र विशेषता है कि यह अपना अंडा कौए के घोसले में देती है, और खुद का घोसला कभी नहीं बनाती।

कोयल प्रकृति की बेटियां हैं। हर साल वसंत ऋतु में पूरी तन्मयता, ईमानदारी और समयबद्धता के साथ अपनी मीठी तान छेड़कर सम्पूर्ण वातावरण को और भी अधिक मोहक और हसीन बनाती हैं। हालांकि प्रकृति ने कोयल को सुरीली आवाज से नवाजा है, लेकिन इसके बावजूद यह पक्षी स्वभाव से बेहद चालाक पक्षी की श्रेणी में आने वाला जीव है।

कोयल पक्षी काफी हद तक पेड़ों पर ही पाया जा सकता है। वे मुख्य रूप से पर्णपाती और शंकुधारी जंगलों, लकड़ी के भूमि क्षेत्रों, घास के मैदानों, झाड़ियों, दलदली भूमि, तराई और यहां तक कि जंगल के सपाट मैदानों में निवास करते हैं। दुनियाभर में कोयल की 127 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं, यूरोप में केवल दो ही प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं। अधिकांश प्रजातियां अफ्रीका, एशिया और आस्ट्रेलिया में पाई जाती हैं। कोयल की आधी से ज्यादा प्रजातियां ऐसी हैं, जो दूसरे पक्षियों के घोंसलों में अंडे देती हैं। वास्तव में, कोयल अपने बच्चों को पालने के प्रयास से बचने के लिए अन्य पक्षियों के घोंसलों में अंडे देती है। लगभग 20 दिनों के बाद कोयल घोंसला छोड़ देती है।

कोयल अपना लगभग पूरा जीवन जंगल में बिताती है, जंगल उसका निवास स्थान है और जंगलों में एक स्वस्थ कोयल का जीवनकाल लगभग 6 साल होता है।
