यह कोई साधारण गुड़हल नहीं है। शू फ्लॉवर की प्रजाति वाला हिबिस्कस कोकियो फूल, सिर्फ हवाई आइलैंड में मिलते हैं। 1950 में यह विलुप्त हो चुके थे, फिर 20 साल बाद कोकियो का एक पेड़ मिला। लाल से नारंगी रंग के फूलों वाला ये पौधा एक आगजनी में खत्म हो जाता, लेकिन इसकी एक डाली बचा ली गई और इसे 23 अन्य पौधों में ग्राफ्ट किया गया। 

हिबिस्कस कोकियो सेंट जॉनियनस (वैज्ञानिक नाम: हिबिस्कस कोकियो एसएसपी. सेंटजोहनियानस) काउई द्वीप की एक स्थानिक प्रजाति की सदाबहार झाड़ी है। यह एक दुर्लभ प्रजाति है, जो काउई द्वीप में मकावाओ की मूल निवासी है। यह एक उष्णकटिबंधीय हिबिस्कस प्रजाति है, जिससे पीले या नारंगी रंग के फूल खिलते हैं। 

इसके पेड़ की ऊँचाई: 3 से 7 मीटर, पेड़ की चौड़ाई: 0.9 से 1.2 मीटर होती है। इसकी पत्ती आकार में अंडाकार तथा चमकदार हरे रंग की होती है। इसके फूल का रंग पीला और नारंगी होता है। कुछ स्थान पर लाल रंग के फूल भी दिखते हैं। इस झाड़ी में फूल जून से सितंबर माह में आता है।

This is not an ordinary hibiscus. Hibiscus kokio flowers, a species of shoe flower, are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. It was extinct in 1950, then 20 years later a Kokio tree was found. The plant, with red to orange flowers, would have perished in a fire, but one scion was saved and grafted onto 23 other plants.

Hibiscus kokio St. johnianus (scientific name: Hibiscus kokio ssp. st.johnianus) is an evergreen shrub endemic to the island of Kauai. It is a rare species, native to Makawao in the island of Kauai. It is a tropical hibiscus species that produces yellow or orange flowers.

Its tree height: 3 to 7 meters, tree width: 0.9 to 1.2 meters. Its leaves are oval in shape and shiny green. Its flower color is yellow and orange. Red colored flowers are also seen at some places. The flowers of this shrub come in the month of June to September.
