सास बहू का मंदिर, ग्वालियर

आज बात करते हैं, ग्वालियर में स्थित सास बहू मंदिर की। सास बहू मंदिर जिसे सास बहू मंदिर, सहस्त्रबाहु मंदिर या हरि सदनम मंदिर भी कहा जाता है। 

सहस्रबाहु मंदिर (अपभ्रंश नाम - सास बहू मंदिर) भारत के मध्य प्रदेश राज्य के ग्वालियर क्षेत्र में स्थित एक 11वीं शताब्दी में निर्मित हिन्दू मंदिर है। यह विष्णु के पद्मनाभ रूप को समर्पित है और ग्वालियर के किले के समीप स्थित है। यहाँ मिले शिलालेख के अनुसार इसका निर्माण कच्छपघात राजवंश के राजा महिपाल ने सन् 1093 में किया था। बाद में हुई हिन्दू-मुस्लिम झड़पों में मंदिर को क्षति पहुँची और अब इसके खंडहर हैं।

असल में सास-बहु मंदिर दो अलग-अलग मंदिर है, जिसमें बहु मन्दिर एक खँडहर की भांति खड़ा है, वहीं सास मंदिर कुछ आमूलचूल परिवर्तन के साथ विभिन्न हालत के बीच अपना सामंजस्य बनाये हुए है।

ग्वालियर स्थित सास-बहु मन्दिर के बारे में एक रोचक कथा है

कहते हैं कि महाराजा महिपाल जी की पत्नी भगवान विष्णु जी की परम भक्त थीं। इसलिए राजा महिपाल ने भगवन विष्णु जी के सम्मान में मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया। वक्त बीतने के साथ-साथ जब महाराजा महिपाल का पुत्र विवाह योग्य हुआ। तब राजा महिपाल ने राकुमार के विवाह के लिए योग्य वधु की तलाश में लग गये और जल्द ही राजकुमार का विवाह हो गया।

भावी राजकुमार की पत्नी शिव जी की भक्त थीं। इसलिए उन्होंने विष्णु मंदिर के पास ही में शिव मंदिर का भी निर्मित करवाया। पूर्ण रूप से विकसित मंदिर का निर्माण पंक्तिबद्ध रूप से उत्तर दक्षिण दिशा में हुआ, जिसमें गर्भगृह अंतराल, महा मंडप तथा अर्ध मंडप दक्षिण से उत्तर की ओर हैं। मंदिर की दीवारों, खंबों तथा छत पर नक्काशीदार आकृतियां बनाई गई हैं जो देखते ही मन मोह लेती है। समृद्ध नक्काशीदार स्तंभ तथा केंद्रीय सभागार की छत तीन ओर से ड्योढ़ी द्वारा घिरे हुए हैं तथा बाह्य दीवारें ज्यामितीय, पुष्पाकृतियों, पशु पक्षियों, गज, नर्तक, संगीतकार और कृष्ण लीला के सुंदर दृश्यों से परिपूर्ण है। छोटे मंदिर की बाह्य दीवारें भी इसी प्रकार चित्रित हैं। इस मंदिर में एक लघु केंद्रीय सभागार प्रकोष्ठ भी है।

यह मंदिर लाल बलुआ पत्थर से बना है, जिस पर कमल की नक्काशियां की हुई हैं। इसकी संरचना पिरामिड के आकार की है, जिसमें कोई मेहराब नहीं है। यह मंदिर 32 मीटर लंबा तथा 22 मीटर चौड़ा है। मंदिर में प्रवेश के लिए तीन दिशाओं में दरवाजे हैं। चौथी दिशा में एक दरवाजा बना हुआ तो है, पर वो वर्तमान में बंद है। मंदिर की छत से ग्वालियर शहर को देखना भी अपने आप में एक खास अनुभव देता है।

सास-बहु नाम से एक और मंदिर का उल्लेख हमें राजस्थान के नागदा गांव में मिलता है।

राजस्थान के इस प्रसिद्ध मंदिर को भी सहस्राबाहु मंदिर के नाम से जाना जाता है। यह मंदिर भी भगवान् विष्णु जी को समर्पित है।

Today let's talk about Saas Bahu Temple located in Gwalior. Saas Bahu Temple also known as Saas Bahu Temple, Sahastrabahu Temple or Hari Sadanam Temple.

Sahasrabahu Temple (Apabhramsh name - Saas Bahu Temple) is an 11th-century Hindu temple located in the Gwalior region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is dedicated to the Padmanabha form of Vishnu and is located near the Gwalior Fort. According to the inscription found here, it was built by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghat dynasty in 1093. The temple was damaged in the subsequent Hindu-Muslim clashes and is now in ruins.

Actually the Saas-Bahu temple are two separate temples, in which the Bahu temple stands like a ruin, while the Saas temple with some radical changes is maintaining its harmony between different conditions.

There is an interesting story about the Saas-Bahu Temple in Gwalior.

It is said that the wife of Maharaja Mahipal ji was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. That's why King Mahipal got the temple constructed in honor of Lord Vishnu. With the passage of time, when the son of Maharaja Mahipal became eligible for marriage. Then King Mahipal started looking for a suitable bride for Rakumar's marriage and soon the prince got married.

The future prince's wife was a devotee of Lord Shiva. That's why he also got the Shiva temple built near the Vishnu temple. The fully developed temple was built in a north-south direction in a row, in which the sanctum antarala, maha mandapa and ardha mandapa are from south to north. Carved figures have been made on the walls, pillars and ceiling of the temple, which fascinates the mind as soon as it is seen. The richly carved pillars and the ceiling of the central hall are surrounded by antechambers on three sides and the outer walls are full of geometrical, floral motifs, animals, birds, yards, dancers, musicians and beautiful scenes of Krishna Leela. The outer walls of the small temple are also painted in the same way. There is also a small central auditorium cell in this temple.

The temple is made of red sandstone with lotus carvings on it. Its structure is in the shape of a pyramid, with no arches. This temple is 32 meters long and 22 meters wide. There are doors in three directions to enter the temple. There is a door built in the fourth direction, but it is currently closed. Viewing the city of Gwalior from the roof of the temple also gives a special experience in itself.

We find mention of another temple named Saas-Bahu in Nagda village of Rajasthan.

This famous temple of Rajasthan is also known as Sahasrabahu Temple. This temple is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
