लालची चोरों की कहानी

काशी राज्य में एक ब्राह्मण हुआ करते थे, जिन्हें वह धर्म मंत्र सिद्ध था, जिसके द्वारा वह ग्रह नक्षत्रों का विशेष योग पाने पर आकाश से रत्नों की वर्षा करा सकते थे। उस समय बोधिसत्व एक शिष्य के रूप में उनके पास  विद्याभ्यास करते थे।

एक दिन वह अपने शिष्य को साथ ले किसी काम से अन्य राज्य की ओर जा रहे थे। जब घने जंगलों में होकर गुजर रहे थे, उस समय उन्हें 500 पेशेवर चोरों ने घेर लिया। यह चोर किसी का वध नहीं करते थे। वह लोगों को पकड़ लेते थे और निश्चित धन मिल जाने पर छोड़ देते थे। 

उन्होंने गुरु को रोक लिया और शिष्य बोधिसत्व को धन लाने को भेजा। चलते समय बोधिसत्व ने कहा गुरुदेव डरियेगा नहीं, मैं धन लाकर शीघ्र ही आपको मुक्ति दिला दूंगा। शिष्य के चले जाने पर गुरु ने हिसाब लगा कर देखा तो रत्न वर्षा के लिए उपयुक्त योग उसी दिन था। उन्होंने सोचा क्यों ना रत्न वर्षा कर इन चोरों को संतुष्ट कर दूँ और स्वयं मुक्त हो जाऊं। 

उन्होंने चोरों से कहा मेरा बंधन खोल दो मैं तुम्हें अपार रत्न राशि दिला सकता हूं। चोरों ने ब्राह्मण का आदेश मानकर उनके बंधन खोल दिए और उन्हें नहला धुला कर सुगंधित द्रव्यों का लेप कर उसे पुष्प माला पहनाया।  आकाश की ओर देख समय का अनुमान कर ब्राहमण ने मंत्र का जाप आरंभ किया। थोड़ी ही देर में एक सुनहरा बादल आकाश ने प्रकट हुआ और पृथ्वी पर रत्न बरसने लगे। 

चोरों ने धन समेट लिया और ब्राह्मण से क्षमा मांग कर उनका बड़ा सम्मान किया। इसके पश्चात वे सब एक ओर चल दिए। जंगल में थोड़ी दूर जाने पर उन्हें चोरों का एक दूसरा दल मिला, जिसने उन्हें पकड़ लिया। यह पूछने पर कि हमें क्यों पकड़ा है, उन्होंने कहा हमें धन चाहिए। 

चोरों ने कहा यह हमारे साथ जो ब्राह्मण था वह आकाश से धन की वर्षा करता है। हमें भी यह धन उसी ब्राह्मण ने दिलाया है। तब उन चोरों ने जाकर तुरंत ब्राह्मण को पकड़ लिया और उनसे धन बरसाने को कहा। तब ब्राह्मण ने उत्तर दिया कि धन की वर्षा विशेष योग आने पर ही हो सकती है। तुम्हें 1 वर्ष का इंतजार करना होगा। 

चोरों को क्रोध आ गया। उन्होंने कहा,"क्यों रे दुष्ट! उन चोरों के लिए तो अभी धन बरसा दिया और हमें 1 वर्ष इंतज़ार करने को कहता है।" ऐसा कहकर एक चोर ने तलवार से उसके दो खंड कर डालें। 

अब दोनों चोर दलों में युद्ध प्रारंभ हुआ। पहले वाले सब चोर मारे गए। पीछे वाले चोर सब धन लेकर जंगल में चले गए। जंगल में धन के बंटवारे पर उन चोरों में भी झगड़ा हो गया। भयंकर युद्ध में वे सब मारे गए। केवल दो चोर बच गए। दोनों चोरों ने सब धन एक तालाब के पास गाड़ दिया। एक खड़क लेकर पहरा देने लगा और दूसरा चावल पकाने लगा, क्योंकि दोनों को खूब भूख लगी थी। 

परंतु दोनों के मन में पाप बुरी तरह समाया हुआ था। प्रत्येक अपने साथी को मारकर समस्त धन स्वयं लेने की इच्छा कर रहा था। चावल पका लेने पर चोर ने स्वयं भोजन किया और शेष में विष मिलाकर अपने साथी के पास ले गया। इधर प्रहरी चोर ने सोचा इस कंटक को तुरंत ही नष्ट कर डालना चाहिए। अतः जब उसका साथी भोजन लेकर उसके निकट गया, उसी समय उसने तलवार से उस पर आक्रमण कर उसे मार डाला। प्रहरी भूखा था अतः उसने सपाटे से सारा चावल खा लिया और विष के प्रभाव से वह भी मर गया। 

शिष्य के रूप में बोधिसत्व जब धन लेकर वापस लौटे उस समय उन्होंने वन में केवल शवों के ढेर ही पाए और उन्होंने यह गाथा कही कि,"जो अनुचित उपायों से धन पाना चाहते हैं, वह नष्ट हो जाते हैं।" जैसा लालची चोरों की कहानी बताती है।

Story of Greedy Thieves

There used to be a brahmin in the kingdom of Kashi, to whom he had a dharma mantra, through which he could make gems rain from the sky after getting a special combination of planetary constellations. At that time the Bodhisattva used to study with him as a disciple.

One day he was going to another state for some work with his disciple. While passing through the dense forests, he was surrounded by 500 professional thieves. These thieves did not kill anyone. He used to capture people and release them when they got a certain amount of money.

He stopped the master and sent the disciple Bodhisattva to fetch the money. While walking the Bodhisattva said that Gurudev will not be afraid, I will bring you money and get you free soon. After the departure of the disciple, the Guru looked at the calculations and found that the appropriate yoga for the rain of gems was on the same day. He thought why not satisfy these thieves by raining gems and get free myself.

He told the thieves, open my bond, I can get you a lot of gems. The thieves, obeying the orders of the Brahmin, untied their shackles and washed them after bathing them and smeared them with fragrant substances and garlanded them with flowers. Looking at the sky, anticipating the time, the Brahmin started chanting the mantra. In no time a golden cloud appeared in the sky and gems started raining on the earth.

The thieves collected the money and gave him great respect by asking for forgiveness from the Brahmin. After that they all went aside. After going a short distance in the forest, he found another group of thieves, who caught him. When asked why we have been arrested, he said, "We need money.

The thieves said that this brahmin who was with us rained wealth from the sky. The same Brahmin has given us this money too. Then those thieves immediately went and caught the Brahmin and asked him to shower money. Then the brahmin replied that the rain of wealth can happen only when a special yoga comes. You have to wait 1 year.

The thieves got angry. He said, "Why you wicked! He just rained money for those thieves and tells us to wait for 1 year." Saying this, a thief cut it into two sections with a sword.

Now the war started between both the thieves' parties. All the former thieves were killed. The thieves behind went into the forest with all the money. There was also a fight between those thieves over the distribution of money in the forest. They were all killed in a fierce battle. Only two thieves survived. Both the thieves buried all the money near a pond. One stood guard and the other started cooking rice, because both were very hungry.

But sin was deeply entrenched in both of their minds. Each was wishing to kill his companion and take all the wealth himself. After cooking the rice, the thief himself ate the food and mixed the poison with the rest and took it to his companion. Here the guard thief thought that this thorn should be destroyed immediately. So when his companion went near him with food, at that very moment he attacked him with a sword and killed him. The watchman was hungry, so he ate all the rice flat and died due to the effect of the poison.

When the Bodhisattva returned with money as a disciple, he found only heaps of dead bodies in the forest, and he told the story that "Those who seek wealth by unfair means perish." As the story of greedy thieves tells.
