वाराणसी में कभी एक कर्तव्यनिष्ठ व शीलवान गृहस्थ रहा करता था। तीन बेटियों और एक पत्नी के साथ उसका एक छोटा सा संसार था। किंतु अल्पायु में ही उसका निधन हो गया।

मरणोपरांत उस गृहस्थ का पुनर्जन्म स्वर्ण हंस के रूप में हुआ। पूर्व जन्म के उपादान और संस्कार उसमें इतने प्रबल थे कि वह अपने मनुष्य योनि के घटनाक्रम और उनकी भाषा को विस्मृत नहीं कर पाया। पुनर्जन्म के परिवार का मोह और उनके प्रति उसका लगव उसके वर्तमान को भी प्रभावित कर रहा था। एक दिन वह अपने मोह के आवेश में आकर वाराणसी को उड़ चला। जहां उसकी पूर्व जन्म की पत्नी और तीन बेटियां रहा करती थीं।

 

घर के मुंडेर पर पहुंचकर जब उसने अपनी पत्नी और बेटियों को देखा तो उसका मन खिन्न हो उठा क्योंकि उसके मरणोपरांत उसके परिवार की आर्थिक दशा दयनीय हो चुकी थी। उसकी पत्नी और बेटियां अब सुंदर वस्त्रों की जगह चिथड़ों में दिख रही थीं। वैभव के सारे सामान भी वहां से तिरोहित हो चुके थे। फिर भी पूरे उल्लास के साथ उसने अपनी पत्नी और बेटियों का आलिंगन कर उन्हें अपना परिचय दिया और वापस लौटने से पूर्व उन्हें अपना एक सोने का पंख भी देता गया। जिसे बेचकर उसके परिवार वाले अपने दारिद्र्य को कम कर सकें।

 इस घटना के पश्चात हंस समय-समय पर उनसे मिलने वाराणसी आता रहा और हर बार उन्हें सोने का एक पंख देकर जाता था। बेटियां तो हंस की दान शीलता से संतुष्ट थीं मगर उसकी पत्नी बड़ी ही लोभी  प्रवृत्ति की थी। उसने सोचा क्यों ना वह उस हंस के सारे पंख निकाल कर एक ही पल में धनी बन जाए। बेटियों को भी उसने अपने मन की बात कही। मगर उसकी बेटियां ने उसका कड़ा विरोध किया। 

अगली बार जब वह हंस वहां आया तो संयोगवश उसकी बेटियां वहां नहीं थीं। उसकी पत्नी ने तब उसे बड़े प्यार से पुचकारते हुए अपने करीब बुलाया। नल- प्रपंच के खेल से अनभिज्ञ वह हंस खुशी- खुशी अपनी पत्नी के पास दौड़ता चला गया। मगर यह क्या उसकी पत्नी ने बड़ी बेदर्दी से उसकी गर्दन पकड़ उसके सारे पंख एक ही झटके में नोंच डालें और खून से लथपथ उसके शरीर को लकड़ी के एक टीले पर फेंक दिया। फिर जब वह उन सोने के पंखों को समेटना चाह रही थी तो उसके हाथों सिर्फ साधारण पंख ही लग सके। क्योंकि उस हंस के पंख उसकी इच्छा के प्रतिकूल नोंचे जाने पर साधारण हंस के समान हो जाते थे। 

बेटियां जब लौटकर घर आयीं तो उन्होंने अपने पूर्व जन्म के पिता को खून से सना देखा; उसके सोने के पंख भी लुप्त थे। उन्होंने सारी बात समझ ली और तत्काल ही हंस की भरपूर सेवा सुश्रुषा कर कुछ ही दिनों में उसे स्वस्थ कर दिया। 

स्वभावतः उसके पंख फिर से आने लगे। मगर अब वह सोने के नहीं थे। जब हंस के पंख इतने निकल गए कि वह उड़ने के लिए समर्थ हो गया, तब वह उस घर से उड़ गया और कभी भी वाराणसी में दोबारा दिखाई नहीं पड़ा।

Moral(शिक्षा):- लालच का फल सदैव बुरा होता है।

Varanasi once used to be a dutiful and a modest householder. He had a small world with three daughters and a wife. But he died at an early age.

Posthumously, the householder was reborn as the Golden Swan. Pre-births and rituals were so strong in him that he could not forget the events of his human vagina and his language. The family's love for reincarnation and his attachment to them was affecting his present as well. One day he came under the guise of his fascination and flew to Varanasi.  After this incident, Hans used to come to Varanasi from time to time to visit him every time with a feather of gold. The daughters were satisfied with Swan's charity, but his wife was very greedy. He thought why not remove all the feathers of that goose and become rich in an instant. He also spoke his mind to the daughters. But his daughters strongly opposed him.

The next time the swan came there, incidentally his daughters were not there. His wife then fondly called him closer to him. Unknown to the game of Nal-Prapanch, he went on running happily to his wife. But what if his wife mercilessly held her neck, peeled all her wings in one stroke and threw her blood-soaked body on a wooden mound. Then when she wanted to cover those gold wings, only simple wings could be found on her hands. Because the wings of that goose became like an ordinary goose when it was not drawn against his will.

When the daughters returned home, they saw their former-born father stained with blood; His gold wings were also lost. He understood the whole thing and immediately started swan with full service and made him healthy in a few days.

Naturally his wings started coming again. But now he was not of gold. When the wings of the swan came out so much that he was able to fly, he flew from that house and never appeared again in Varanasi.
