मध्य प्रदेश में कई जिले हैं, जिनमें भौगोलिक और जलवायु विशेषताओं की विविधता है। यह राज्य अपनी उत्कृष्ट कला, शिल्प, संगीत और नृत्य के लिए जाना जाता है। आज हम इसके भौगोलिक स्थिति की नहीं अपितु मध्य प्रदेश के प्रतीक चिन्ह में से एक राजकीय फूल "मैडोना लिली" की चर्चा करेंगे। मैडोना लिली (लिलियम कैंडिडम) मध्य प्रदेश का राजकीय पुष्प है। यह सफेद लिली का फूल, जिसे मैडोना लिली फूल के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, पवित्रता और उर्वरता का प्रतीक है। 

वर्तमान में इसे फ्रांस, इटली, उत्तरी अफ्रीका और मैक्सिको सहित कई देशों में उगाया जाता है। हालाँकि, यह विशेष रूप से मध्य पूर्व और बाल्कन में पाया जाता है। मैडोना लिली की पंखुड़ियाँ सफ़ेद होती हैं, नीचे का भाग पीला होता है और इसकी खुशबू बहुत तेज़ होती है। सर्दियों में फूल खिलते हैं, लेकिन गर्मियों के आते ही वे गायब हो जाते हैं।

मैडोना लिली बेहद खूबसूरत फूल है। उसका प्रयोग सजावट के लिए किया जाता है। आयुर्वेद की दृष्टि से भी यह  बहुत ही उपयोगी पुष्प है। इस पुष्प का हर हिस्सा औषधीय प्रयोग में लाया जाता है। इसका रस त्वचा के लिए बहुत गुणकारी होता है। लिली पुष्प की करीब 100 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं, जो अधिकांशत वसंत ऋतु में खिलती हैं। कुछ प्रजातियां ऐसी भी हैं, जो साल भर किसी न किसी रूप में उपलब्ध होती हैं। 

लिली दक्षिण पूर्वी एशिया व अमेरिका का मूल निवासी है। लिली के पौधे की उम्र तकरीबन 5 साल होती है। इसके पौधे की लंबाई 26 फिट होती है। यह प्रजातियों के अनुसार भिन्न-भिन्न रंग के हो सकते हैं। टाइगर लिली भी इसकी एक प्रजाति है, जो नारंगी रंग की होती है। इस टाइगर प्रजाति के पुष्प पर बाघ की भांति भूरे रंग के धब्बे होते हैं। सफेद लिली के फूल में 6 पंखुड़ियां होती हैं। इसलिए इसे स्टार लिली के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह अपने पराग के लिए कीट पतंग को आकर्षित करते हैं। लिली के फूल का रस नेक्टर कहलाता है। सफेद और टाइगर लिली के फूल में बहुत ही सुंदर सुगंध पाई जाती है। बाकी लिली के पुष्पों में सुगंध नहीं होता।

Therefore, it is also known as star lily. It attracts insects for its pollen. The juice of the lily flower is called nectar. A very beautiful fragrance is found in the white and tiger lily flowers. The rest of the lily flowers do not have fragrance.
