तमिलनाडु के राज्य पशु का नाम नीलगिरि तहर है। नीलगिरि तहर बकरी की एक प्रजाति है। वे घास-जंगल, खुले पहाड़ी घास के मैदान और पहाड़ी ढलान में रहना पसंद करते हैं। नीलगिरि तहर दक्षिणी भारत में पश्चिमी घाट, केरल और तमिलनाडु में पाया जाता है। वैसे तो तमिलनाडु राज्य का गठन 1956 में हुआ था, लेकिन तमिलनाडु का राज्य प्रतीक 1949 में अपनाया गया था।

नीलगिरि तहर एक सामाजिक प्राणी है। नीलगिरि तहरके सिर से शरीर की लंबाई लगभग 80 से 140 सेमी होती है। पूँछ की लम्बाई लगभग 9 से 14 सेमी. वे कंधे पर लगभग 80 से 107 सेमी ऊंचे होते हैं। टाँगें मजबूत और गहरे भूरे भूरे रंग की होती हैं, टाँगों के भीतरी भाग हल्के या गंदे सफेद रंग के होते हैं। मादाएं और अपरिपक्व नर पीले-भूरे से भूरे रंग के होते हैं और नीचे का भाग हल्का पीला होता है। नर मादा से बड़े होते हैं और परिपक्व होने पर गहरे रंग के हो जाते हैं। उनके सामने के पैरों की अगली सतह पर सफेद घुटनों के निशान हैं।

मादा का चेहरा शरीर के समान रंग का होता है और उस पर कोई विशिष्ट चिह्न नहीं होता है। परिपक्व नर में, चेहरा लगभग काला और स्पष्ट रूप से चिह्नित होता है। नीलगिरि तहर की आंखें भूरे-काले रंग की होती हैं, एक हलके पीले रंग का छल्ला आंख को घेरे रहता है, प्रत्येक आंख के पीछे एक समान रंग का धब्बा होता है।

'नीलगिरि तहर' परियोजना

पिछले साल दिसंबर में इस प्रोजेक्ट को लेकर एक सरकारी आदेश जारी किया गया था। परियोजना का उद्देश्य नीलगिरि तहर की आबादी, वितरण और पारिस्थितिकी की बेहतर समझ विकसित करना था। नीलगिरि तहर को उनके ऐतिहासिक आवासों से पुनः परिचित कराना और नीलगिरि तहर के लिए आसन्न खतरों को संबोधित करना।

साथ ही यह भी निर्णय लिया गया कि 7 अक्टूबर को डॉ. ई आर सी डेविडर के सम्मान में नीलगिरि तहर दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाएगा, जिनका जन्मदिन इसी दिन पड़ता है। डेविडर ने 1975 में नीलगिरि तहर पर पहले अध्ययनों में से एक का नेतृत्व किया। इस पाँच-वर्षीय पहल के लिए, 25.14 करोड़ रुपये की राशि आवंटित की गई है।

grassy forests, open mountain meadows and mountain slopes. The Nilgiri tahr is found in southern

India in the Western Ghats, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Although the state of Tamil Nadu was formed in

1956, the state emblem of Tamil Nadu was adopted in 1949.

The Nilgiri tahr is a social animal. The head to body length of the Nilgiri tahr is approximately 80 to 

140 cm. The length of the tail is approximately 9 to 14 cm. They stand approximately 80 to 107 cm

high at the shoulder. The legs are strong and dark brown in color, the inner parts of the legs are light or

dirty white. Females and immature males are yellowish brown to brown in color with pale yellow

undersides. Males are larger than females and become darker in color as they mature. They have white

knee marks on the front surface of their front legs. The female's face is the same color as the body and has no distinctive markings. In mature males, the

face is almost black and clearly marked. The eyes of the Nilgiri tahr are brownish-black, with a fawn

ring surrounding the eye, with a similarly colored spot behind each eye. The Nilgiri tahr is an endangered species and is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection)

Act, 1972 of India. The Tamil Nadu government had launched the Nilgiri Tahr Project in October last

year to conserve the state animal.

'Nilgiri Tahr' Project

In December last year, a government order was issued regarding this project. The aim of the project was

to develop a better understanding of the population, distribution and ecology of the Nilgiri tahr.

Reintroducing Nilgiri Tahr to their historical habitats and addressing imminent threats to the Nilgiri Tahr. It was also decided that October 7 would be celebrated as Nilgiri Tahr Day in honor of Dr. E.R.C.

Davider, whose birthday falls on this day. Davider led one of the first studies on the Nilgiri tahr in 1975.

For this five-year initiative, an amount of Rs 25.14 crore has been allocated.
