पिंक सिटी के नाम से मशहूर राजस्थान का शहर जयपुर, वैसे तो अपने किलों और महलों के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, लेकिन इस शहर में कई मंदिर ऐसे भी हैं, जो इन किलों और महलों की नींव डलने से भी पुराने माने जाते हैं। जानते हैं ऐसे ही एक शिव मंदिर के बारे में, जिसके लिए इतिहासकारों का का कहना है कि जयपुर का यह एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव मंदिर जयपुर से भी पुराना है। यह मंदिर सवाई जयसिंह के समय का है। भगवान शिव के नाम पर ही इस इलाके को शंकरगढ़ के नाम से जाना जाता है।

एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव का मंदिर एक पहाड़ी पर स्थित है और आम जनता के लिए साल में केवल एक ही बार महाशिव रात्रि को खोला जाता है। एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव का मंदिर मोदी डूंगरी पहाड़ी पर स्थित है। इस पहाड़ी के निचले के इलाके में खूबसूरत बिड़ला मंदिर है। जबकि, बिड़ला मंदिर के ठीक पास में ही जयपुर के प्रथम पूज्य गणेश जी का मंदिर है। एकलिंगेश्वर मंदिर सिर्फ साल में एकबार महाशिवरात्रि को ही खुलता है जिस दौरान भक्त उनके दर्शन कर पाते हैं। (उस समय राज परिवार के लोग हर साल सावन के महीने में सहस्त्रघट रुद्राभिषेक जैसे धार्मिक आयोजन भी करवाते थे। इन आयोजनों पर खर्च होने वाले धन का प्रबंध भी राज परिवार की तरफ से ही किया जाता था। महाशिवरात्रि पर एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव मंदिर में पूजन के लिए शहर के श्रद्धालुओं समेत आसपास के ग्रामीण इलाके के लोग भी पहुंचते हैं।)

एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव की पूजा शिवरात्रि पर सबसे पहले जयपुर के राजघराने के द्वारा की जाती है। जब तक पूर्व राजमाता गायत्री देवी जीवित थीं, वह सबसे पहले इस मंदिर में शिवलिंग का अभिषेक करती थीं और फिर जयपुर शहर के साथ ही दूर-दूर से आए भक्त शिवजी की पूजा करते थे। यह मंदिर आज भी शाही परिवार के अधिकार क्षेत्र में ही माना जाता है और केवल शिवरात्री पर आम लोगों के लिए खुलता है।

एकलिंगेश्वर महादेव मंदिर के बारे में कहा जाता है कि यह मंदिर जयपुर की स्थापना से भी पुराना मंदिर है। जब इसका भव्य रूप से निर्माण हुआ तो इस मंदिर में शिवलिंग के साथ शिव परिवार की स्थापना भी की गई। लेकिन दंतकथाओं के अनुसार कुछ समय बाद ही शिव परिवार की मूर्तियां यहां से ओझल हो गईं। इसके बाद पुन: यहां शिव परिवार की मूर्तियां स्थापित कराई गईं लेकिन दूसरी बार भी मूर्तिया अदृश्य हो गईं। इसके बाद से अनहोनी के डर से फिर कभी यहां शिव परिवार की मूर्तियों की स्थापना नहीं की गई।

This temple is still considered under the jurisdiction of the royal family and is open to the common people only on Shivratri.

It is said about Ekalingeshwar Mahadev Temple that this temple is older than the establishment of Jaipur. When it was constructed grandly, the Shiva family was also established in this temple along with the Shivalinga. But according to legends, after some time the idols of Shiva family disappeared from here. After this, the idols of Shiva family were installed here again but for the second time also the idols became invisible. After this, due to fear of untoward incident, idols of Shiva family were never installed here again.
