सारिपुत्र राजगीर के ऐतिहासिक स्थानों में से एक है। सारिपुत्र गौतम बुद्ध के दो प्रिय शिष्यों में से एक थे और इनकी अस्थियों को यही पर रखा गया था। सारि उनकी माँ का नाम था और एक पक्षी का नाम भी था और पुत्र का अर्थ लड़का होता है। यह नालन्दा में नालन्दा विश्वविद्यालय खंडहर परिसर के अंदर स्थित एक प्राचीन बौद्ध स्तूप है। इसे महान स्तूप के रूप में भी जाना जाता है, यह नालंदा में अवश्य देखने योग्य स्थानों में से एक है। बुद्ध के अनुयायी सारिपुत्र के सम्मान में मौर्य सम्राट अशोक द्वारा यह तीसरी शताब्दी में निर्मित किया गया था।

स्तूप में गौतम बुद्ध के दो प्रमुख शिष्यों में से एक सारिपुत्र की अस्थियाँ हैं। स्तूप के शीर्ष पर पिरामिड का आकार है। स्तूप के चारों ओर सीढ़ियों की कई कतारें, इसके शीर्ष तक ले जाती हैं। निर्माण की सात परतें इसके विशाल आकार को स्पष्ट करती हैं, जिससे यह देखने लायक बनता है। सुंदर मूर्तियां और मन्नत स्तूप संरचना के पार्श्व में हैं। इन मन्नत स्तूपों का निर्माण ईंटों से किया गया है और इन पर पवित्र बौद्ध ग्रंथों के अंश अंकित किए गए हैं। ऐसा माना जाता है कि इन स्तूपों का निर्माण भगवान बुद्ध की राख के ऊपर किया गया था। सभी मन्नत स्तूपों में सबसे आकर्षक पांचवां स्तूप है, जिसे इसके कोने के टावरों के साथ अच्छी तरह से संरक्षित किया गया है। ये मीनारें गुप्त-युग की कला के उत्कृष्ट पैनलों से सजी हैं जिनमें भगवान बुद्ध की प्लास्टर आकृतियाँ और जातक कथाओं के दृश्य शामिल हैं। स्तूप के शीर्ष भाग में एक तीर्थ कक्ष है, जिसमें एक कुरसी है, जिसका उपयोग मूल रूप से भगवान बुद्ध की एक बड़ी मूर्ति रखने के लिए किया गया होगा। म्यांमार में ग्वे बिन टेट कोन स्तूप को नालंदा स्तूप से प्रभावित माना जाता है।

Sariputra Stupa

Sariputra is one of the historical places of Rajgir. Sariputra was one of the two favorite disciples of Gautam Buddha and his ashes were kept here. Sari was his mother's name and was also the name of a bird and Putra means boy. It is an ancient Buddhist stupa located inside the Nalanda University ruins complex in Nalanda. Also known as the Great Stupa, it is one of the must-see places in Nalanda. It was built in the 3rd century by the Maurya emperor Ashoka in honor of Sariputra, a follower of Buddha.

Sariputra Stupa, also known as Nalanda Stupa, is one of the notable excavations present among the ruins of Nalanda University. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the most important monument in Nalanda and stands as a testament to its rich cultural heritage. It was built in the 3rd century BC by the Maurya emperor Ashoka in honor of Sariputra, a follower of Buddha. Sāriputra became a famous arhat after he was able to attain salvation by following in the footsteps of the Buddha.

The stupa houses the bones of Sariputra, one of the two chief disciples of Gautam Buddha. The top of the stupa is in the shape of a pyramid. Several rows of stairs surround the stupa, leading to its top. The seven layers of construction explain its immense size, making it a sight to behold. Beautiful sculptures and votive stupas flank the structure. These votive stupas are constructed of bricks and have passages from sacred Buddhist texts inscribed on them. It is believed that these stupas were built over the ashes of Lord Buddha. The most attractive of all the votive stupas is the fifth stupa, which is well preserved with its corner towers. These towers are decorated with exquisite panels of Gupta-era art that include stucco figures of Lord Buddha and scenes from the Jataka tales. The top part of the stupa has a shrine chamber, with a pedestal, which may have originally been used to house a large statue of Lord Buddha. The Gwe Bin Tet Kon Stupa in Myanmar is considered to be influenced by the Nalanda Stupa.
