हिमाचल प्रदेश का राज्य पशु "हिम तेंदुआ" 

हिमाचल प्रदेश के राज्य पशु का नाम हिम तेंदुआ है। हिम तेंदुआ एक खूबसूरत जानवर है। शरीर का रंग क्रीम-पीला या सफेद से स्मोकी-ग्रे है, जिसमें सफेद या पीले रंग का फर और गहरे भूरे से काले रोसेट और धब्बे हैं। उनके छोटे गोल कान होते हैं जो गर्मी के नुकसान को कम करने में मदद करते हैं। नासिका गुहा बड़ी हो गई है, जो सांस लेने पर ठंडी हवा को गर्म कर देती है। युवा हिम तेंदुओं की पीठ के बीच में अनुदैर्ध्य काली धारियां होती हैं।

इनकी आंखें हल्के हरे या भूरे रंग की होती हैं। पूंछ लंबी और लचीली होती है, और इसका उपयोग खड़ी और चट्टानी इलाके में अपना संतुलन बनाए रखने के लिए किया जाता है, और शिकार के समय भी संतुलन बनाए रखने के लिए इसका उपयोग किया जाता है। वसा जमा होने के कारण उनकी पूँछें भी बहुत मोटी होती हैं और बहुत मोटी फर से ढकी होती हैं, जिससे उन्हें सोते समय अपने चेहरे की रक्षा के लिए कंबल की तरह इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है।

वे खड़ी, पथरीली और टूटी-फूटी ज़मीन पसंद करते हैं। दिन के समय आराम करने के लिए चट्टानों और प्रमुख पर्वतश्रेणियों को प्राथमिकता दी जाती है। हिमाचल का राज्य पशु हिम तेंदुआ प्रदेश के पहाड़ों से गायब होने लगा है। ग्लोबल वार्मिगिं के चलते साल दर साल सिकुड़ रही स्नो लाइन से इस दुर्लप्रजाति पर संकट के बादल मंडराने लगे हैं।

पिछले तीन दशक के दौरान हिम तेंदुओं की संख्या लगातार कम हो रही है। प्रदेश में कितने हिम तेंदुए हैं, इसका पता वन विभाग को भी नहीं है। इसकी गणना की अभी तक कोई व्यवस्था नहीं है।

वाइल्ड लाइफ प्रोटेक्शन एक्ट 1972 के तहत हिम तेंदुआ अति दुर्लभ श्रेणी में रखा गया है। हिमाचल में इसे राज्य पशु का दर्जा दिया गया है। लेकिन, राज्य पशु होने के बावजूद ये प्रजाति लुप्त हो रही है।                                  

महज 12 देशों में पाया जाता है हिम तेंदुआ

विश्व के एक दर्जन देशों में हिम तेंदुआ पाया जाता है। इनमें भारत प्रमुख है। आईयूसीएन अंतरराष्ट्रीय संगठन ने विश्व में हिम तेंदुए की संख्या 4080 से 6590 बताई है। हिमाचल में लाहौल, किन्नौर, पांगी, नौहराधार और ऊपरी क्षेत्रों में हिम तेंदुआ देखा जाता रहा है।

The state animal of Himachal Pradesh is the snow leopard. The snow leopard is a beautiful animal. The body color is cream-yellow or white to smoky-grey, with white or yellowish fur and dark brown to black rosettes and spots. They have small rounded ears that help reduce heat loss. The nasal cavity is enlarged, which warms the cold air when inhaled. Young snow leopards have longitudinal black stripes down the middle of their backs.

Their eyes are light green or brown in color. The tail is long and flexible, and is used to maintain its balance in steep and rocky terrain, and is also used to maintain balance while hunting. Their tails are also very thick due to fat deposits and are covered with very thick fur, allowing them to be used like a blanket to protect their face while sleeping.

They prefer steep, rocky and broken ground. Rocks and prominent mountain ranges are preferred for resting during the day. The state animal of Himachal, the snow leopard, has started disappearing from the mountains of the state. Due to global warming, the snow line is shrinking year after year, this rare species is in danger.

The number of snow leopards has been continuously decreasing during the last three decades. Even the Forest Department does not know how many snow leopards there are in the state. There is no system to calculate it yet.

Under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, the snow leopard has been kept in the extremely rare category. In Himachal it has been given the status of state animal. But, despite being the state animal, this species is becoming extinct.

Snow leopard is found in only 12 countries

Snow leopard is found in a dozen countries of the world. India is prominent among these. The international organization IUCN has estimated the number of snow leopards in the world at 4080 to 6590. In Himachal, snow leopard has been seen in Lahaul, Kinnaur, Pangi, Nauhradhar and upper areas.
