वैसे तो आप सभी ने कई तरह के मेंढक देखे होंगे, परंतु आज जिस मेंढक की चर्चा करने जा रही हूं, वह कम लोगों ने ही देखा होगा। मैंने भी नहीं देखा। क्या आपने कभी बैंगनी रंग का मेंढक देखा है? नहीं ना... ऐसा इसलिए क्योंकि यह मेंढक दिखता ही बहुत कम है। यह अपनी जिंदगी का ज्यादातर समय जमीन के नीचे ही बिताता है। इसे साल 2003 में खोजा गया था। बैंगनी मेंढक सिर्फ भारत के पश्चिमी घाट में ही पाए जाते हैं। साल 2008 में इसे दुनिया के 20 सबसे अजीबोगरीब जीवों की सूची में शामिल किया गया था। इसका वैज्ञानिक नाम - नासिकाबत्राचस सह्याड्रेन्सिस। 

बैंगनी मेंढक का शरीर मजबूत और फूला हुआ दिखाई देता है और अन्य चपटे मेंढकों की तुलना में अपेक्षाकृत गोल होता है। उनका चपटा शरीर उन्हें जलमग्न चट्टानों और पत्थरों से चिपके रहने में मदद करता है, जो अनिवार्य रूप से उन्हें मजबूत धाराओं से लड़ने में मदद करता है, जिससे उन्हें धारा तटों के पास रहने में आसानी होती है जहां वे आम तौर पर रहते हैं। इसके हाथ और पैर फैले हुए हैं। अन्य मेंढकों की तुलना में इसका सिर छोटा और असामान्य नुकीला थूथन होता है। वयस्क आमतौर पर गहरे बैंगनी-भूरे रंग के होते हैं। नर मादाओं की लंबाई का लगभग एक तिहाई होते हैं।

कठोर हथेलियों वाले इसके छोटे और मांसल अग्रअंग इसे भूमिगत खोदने में मदद करते हैं। अन्य मेंढकों के विपरीत, इसके पिछले पैर बहुत छोटे होते हैं, जो इसे एक स्थान से दूसरे स्थान पर छलांग लगाने की अनुमति नहीं देते हैं। परिणामस्वरूप, यह किसी भी दूरी को लंबे डगों के साथ तय करता है। भूमिगत मिट्टी के दीमकों का शिकार करने के लिए यह अपनी गंध की क्षमता पर अधिक निर्भर करता है।

बिल में रहने वाला यह मेंढक तालाबों और खाइयों या झरनों के करीब ढीली, नम और अच्छी तरह हवादार मिट्टी पसंद करता है। इस प्रजाति के केवल 135 मेंढक ज्ञात हैं, जिनमें से केवल 3 मादाएँ हैं। इसके लिए सबसे बड़ा खतरा मानव अतिक्रमण के कारण निवास स्थान का नुकसान है।

Purple Frog

Although all of you must have seen many types of frogs, but the frog that I am going to discuss today, only a few people must have seen it. I haven't seen either. Have you ever seen a purple frog? No no... That's because this frog is very less visible. It spends most of its life under the ground. It was discovered in the year 2003. Purple frogs are found only in the Western Ghats of India. In the year 2008, it was included in the list of 20 most strange creatures in the world. Its scientific name is Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis.

The purple frog's body appears strong and bloated and is relatively round compared to other flattened frogs. Their flattened body helps them cling to submerged rocks and boulders, which essentially helps them fight strong currents, making it easier for them to stay near stream banks where they typically live. Its arms and legs are spread. It has a small head and an unusually pointed snout compared to other frogs. Adults are usually dark purple-brown. Males are about one-third the length of females.

Its short and fleshy forelimbs with hard palms help it to dig underground. Unlike other frogs, its hind legs are very short, which do not allow it to jump from place to place. As a result, it covers any distance with long strides. It relies heavily on its sense of smell to hunt termites underground.

This burrowing frog prefers loose, moist and well-aerated soil near ponds and ditches or streams. Only 135 frogs of this species are known, of which only 3 are females. The biggest threat to it is habitat loss due to human encroachment.
