The state bird of Gujarat is the Greater Flamingo, which is known as Rajhans in Hindi. The Kutch Desert Sanctuary of the state of Gujarat, located in Bhuj, is quite famous for its Flamingo City. Greater flamingos live in selective habitats, as they require salty lagoons, deep water, and seas to survive.

Flamingos have long legs, large curved beaks, and feathers ranging in color from white or gray to pink or orange. Members of some species may have black beaks and some may have black wings. The Greater Flamingo is the largest bird, reaching 3.5 to 5 feet in length and weighing between 4.4 and 8.8 pounds. The lesser flamingo is the smallest bird, measuring 2.6 to 3 feet in height and 2.6 to 6 pounds in weight.

Flamingos prefer shallow aquatic habitats, including tidal flats, lagoons, lakes, marshes, and islands. Flamingos are omnivores, feeding on blue-green algae, brine shrimp, insects, crustaceans, and molluscs. They stir the soil with their feet and dip their beaks upside down in the water to filter food.

The Greater Flamingo is a noisy bird, known for its call. The bird uses its vocalizations to connect with its groups whenever it is separated. Greater flamingos often stand on one leg. By doing this they keep their hind legs warm under their feathers. The plumage of the Greater Flamingo is usually pink, with white as well as red covert feathers and primary black and secondary flight feathers. The state bird of Gujarat has a long downward sloping bill and legs of pink color with black tips. It has peculiar shaped head, curved neck, unique low bend, yellow colored eyes.
