सुंदर "नीलकंठ (Neelkanth)" पक्षी ओडिशा का राज्य पक्षी है। उड़ीसा राज्य के साथ ही यह कर्नाटक और तेलंगाना का भी राज्य पक्षी है। दिखने में यह बहुत ही सुंदर पक्षी है, जिसके मुख्य पंख नीले रंग के होते हैं। "नीलकंठ (Neelkanth)" पक्षी में नर और मादा लगभग एक से ही दिखते हैं। 

साधारणतया नीलकंठ खेती वाले जगह, पतले जंगल और घास के मैदान में पाए जाते हैं। इसको "भारतीय रोलर (Indian roller)" भी कहा जाता है। नीलकंठ पक्षी मुख्य रूप से  हिमालय के पास स्थित छोटी पहाड़ियों के नीचे स्थित जंगलों में पाया जाता है। यह दक्षिण भारत और पश्चिम भारत के जंगलों में भी मिलता है, भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में यह पाकिस्तान वर्मा दक्षिण पूर्व एशिया तिब्बत, चीन और अरब प्रायद्वीप के कुछ हिस्सों में भी पाया जाता है। यह पक्षी पेड़ों की नंगी शाखाओं पर बैठे या आराम करते हुए आसानी से दिख जाते हैं। कभी-कभी इन पक्षियों को शहरी क्षेत्रों में तारों पर भी देखा जाता है।

नीलकंठ पक्षी का वजन 70 ग्राम से 100 ग्राम तक का होता है। नीलकंठ सामान्यतः बीज, दाने, कीट पतंगे और छोटे सरीसृप खाता है। इसके सर और पूछ के नीचे हल्के नीले रंग का धब्बा होता है। उड़ते वक्त इसके गहरे नीले आकर्षक पंख दिखाई देते हैं। इसके सामने का हिस्सा पीला भूरे रंग का होता है। इसकी चोंच और आंखें काले रंग की होती हैं। इसका सिर बड़ा और गर्दन छोटी होती है। इसके सर, निचले पंख और पूछ नीले रंग के होते हैं। प्राथमिक पंख और पूंछ गहरे नीले रंग की होती है।

नीलकंठ अपना घोसला 3 से 9 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर बनाता है, घोंसला बनाने के लिए यह पेड़ों की टहनियों, पत्तियों जड़ों और घास का उपयोग करता है, इसकी घोसले का आकार किसी कप के जैसा होता है। "नीलकंठ (Neelkanth)" पक्षी की प्रजातियों को विलुप्त होने के खतरे का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता है। यह लुप्तप्राय प्रजाति नहीं है।

नीलकंठ पक्षी एक बार में 3 से 6 नीले, हरे और पीले रंग लिए हुए अंडे जिन पर भूरे और काले रंग के धब्बे होते हैं देता है। अंडे सेने की अवधि 16 से 21 दिन होती है। 21 दिन बाद अण्डों से बच्चे बाहर आ जाते हैं। बच्चों की देखभाल नर और मादा दोनों मिलकर करते हैं। नर नीलकंठ पक्षी मादा और बच्चों के लिए भोजन लाता है। तीन हफ्तों के बाद नीलकंठ पक्षी के बच्चे स्वयं भोजन खोज सकते हैं, हालांकि यह अपने माता पिता के साथ 2 महीने तक रहते हैं। 2 महीने के बाद यह अपना घोंसला छोड़कर उड़ जाते हैं। नीलकंठ पक्षी का जीवनकाल 18 वर्ष तक हो सकता है।

The beautiful "Neelkanth" bird is the state bird of Odisha. Along with the state of Orissa, it is also the state bird of Karnataka and Telangana. It is a very beautiful bird in appearance, whose main feathers are of blue colour. Male and female look almost the same in "Neelkanth" bird.

Neelkanth is generally found in cultivated places, thin forests and grasslands. It is also called "Indian roller". The Neelkanth bird is mainly found in the forests located at the foot of the small hills near the Himalayas. It is also found in the forests of South India and West India, in the Indian subcontinent it is also found in parts of Pakistan, Burma, Southeast Asia, Tibet, China and the Arabian Peninsula. These birds are easily seen sitting or resting on the bare branches of trees. Sometimes these birds are also seen on wires in urban areas.

The weight of Neelkanth bird ranges from 70 grams to 100 grams. Neelkanth generally eats seeds, grains, insects, moths and small reptiles. There is a light blue spot under its head and tail. Its deep blue attractive wings are visible while flying. Its front part is yellowish brown. Its beak and eyes are black. Its head is big and neck is short. Its head, lower wings and tail are blue. The primary wings and tail are dark blue.

Neelkanth builds its nest at a height of 3 to 9 meters, it uses tree branches, leaves, roots and grass to make the nest, its nest shape is like a cup. The "Neelkanth" bird species does not face the threat of extinction. It is not an endangered species.

The Neelkanth bird lays 3 to 6 blue, green and yellow colored eggs at a time with brown and black spots on them. The hatching period is 16 to 21 days. After 21 days the kids come out from the eggs. Both the male and the female take care of the young. The male Neelkanth bird brings food for the female and the children. After three weeks, the nestlings can forage for themselves, although they remain with their parents for up to 2 months. After 2 months they leave their nest and fly away. The life span of the Neelkanth bird can be up to 18 years.
