साइप्रिपेडियम कैलकेलस नाम का ये जंगली ऑर्किड कभी पूरे यूरोप में मिलता था, लेकिन अब यह सिर्फ ब्रिटेन में होता है। पीले और जामुनी से रंग वाला ये फूल अब अब इतना दुर्लभ है कि इसकी एक डाली 5 हजार अमेरिकी डॉलर और 3 लाख 35 हजार 7 सौ 49 रुपये में मिलती है।

यह यूरोप में सबसे बड़े फूलों वाली ऑर्किड प्रजाति है, जो 60 सेंटीमीटर तक लंबी होती है। इसके फूल 9 सेमी तक चौड़े होते हैं। फूलों से पहले, यह अन्य ऑर्किड से बड़े आकार की होती है और इसकी अंडाकार पत्तियां 18 सेमी लंबी और 9 सेमी चौड़ी होती हैं, जो अन्य ऑर्किड की तरह समानांतर शिराओं का प्रदर्शन करते हैं। प्रत्येक शूट में चार पत्तियां और फूलों की एक छोटी संख्या (1-2) होती है, जिसमें लाल-भूरे से काले (शायद ही कभी हरे) और एक चप्पल के आकार का पीला लेबेलम होता है, जिसके भीतर लाल डॉट्स दिखाई देते हैं। यह एक लंबे समय तक रहने वाला बारहमासी फूल है और क्षैतिज तनों (प्रकंद) का उपयोग करके फैलता है।

It has a wide distribution from Europe east through Asia from Spain to the Pacific. It is generally found in open woodland on moist soils. In continental Europe it is also found on limestone in decomposed humus of semi-shaded woodland cover. It has declined in much of the European part of its range, and is consequently legally protected in many countries. Its upper altitude limit is 2100 m. According to the instructions provided by Phytosia, it cannot survive waterlogging or direct afternoon sun.

This unique flower is so special that it has a personal bodyguard at the Chelsea Flower Show held every year. It is nicknamed the 'lady's slipper' because of its yellow petals that look like a tiny clog or shoe. This is one of the most unusual flowers you can see in the UK.
