"ब्रह्मकमल (Brahma Kamal)" नाम तो आप सभी ने भी सुना होगा। "ब्रह्मकमल (Brahma Kamal)" का वर्णन वेदों में भी मिलता है। ब्रह्मकमल हिमालय की वादियों में होने वाला एक पुष्प है और सिर्फ रात में ही खिलता है। सुबह होते ही इसका फूल अपने आप बंद हो जाता है। यह पुष्प रात्रि 9:00 से 12:30 के बीच ही खिलता है। इसे खिलते देखना सौभाग्य सूचक होता है। अपनी विशेषताओं की वजह से यह दुनियाभर में लोकप्रिय है और लोग इसको देखने के लिए तरसते हैं।

ब्रह्म कमल की 24 प्रजातियां उत्तराखंड राज्य में मिलती हैं तथा तथा पूरे विश्व में इसकी 210 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं। ब्रह्म कमल के पौधों की ऊंचाई 70 से 80 सेंटीमीटर होती है। सफ़ेद रंग का इसका पुष्प टहनियों में ही नहीं बल्कि पीले पत्तियों से निकले कमल पात के पुष्पगुच्छ के रूप में खिलता है। जिस समय यह पुष्प खिलता है वातावरण सुगंध से भर जाता है। ब्रह्म कमल की खुशबू बहुत तीक्ष्ण होती है।

ब्रह्म कमल केदारनाथ से 2 किलोमीटर ऊपर वासु की ताल के समीप तथा ब्रह्म कमल नामक तीर्थ पर सर्वाधिक उत्पन्न होता है। इसके अतिरिक्त फूलों की घाटी एवं पिंडारी ग्लेशियर, रूपकुंड, हेमकुंड, ब्रज गंगा, फूलों की घाटी में पुष्प बहुतायत पाया जाता है।

यह एकमात्र ऐसा फूल है, जिसकी पूजा की जाती है। माना जाता है इसमें खुद देवताओं का वास रहता है। भगवान ब्रह्मा के नाम पर इस फूल का नाम पड़ा था। मान्यता है कि इस फूल के दर्शन मात्र से अनेक इच्छाएं पूरी हो जाती हैं।

महाकाव्य महाभारत में भी इस पुप्ष का उल्लेख मिलता है। इसकी मादक खुशबू की वजह से द्रोपदी इसको पाने के लिए व्याकुल हो गई थी। महाभारत के वन पर्व में इसे सौगंधिक पुष्प कहा गया है। पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार भगवान विष्णुजी ने केदारनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग पर 1008 शिव नामों से 1008 ब्रह्मकमल पुष्पों से शिवार्चन किया और वे, कमलनयन कहलाये। यही इन्हें सुदर्शन चक्र वरदान स्वरूप प्राप्त हुआ था। केदारनाथ शिवलिंग को अर्पित कर प्रसाद के रूप में दर्शनार्थियों को बांटा जाता है।

ब्रह्मकमल पुष्प की कोई जड़ नहीं होती अर्थात यह पत्तों से पनपता है। इसकी बुवाई पत्तों से की जाती है। इसे अधिक पानी और गर्मी से बचाना होता है। ब्रह्म पुष्प एक ऐसा फूल है, जिसकी महालक्ष्मी वृद्धि के लिए पूजा की जाती है। जैसा कि हम सभी जानते हैं की कमल पानी (कीचड़) में खिलता है, पर "ब्रह्मकमल (Brahma Kamal)" कभी पानी में नहीं खिलता। इसका वृक्ष होता है, पत्ते बड़े और मोटे होते हैं तथा पुष्प सफेद होता है।

ब्रह्म पुष्प की बिक्री पर प्रतिबंध होने के बावजूद भी इसे तीर्थ यात्रियों को बेचा जाता है। आलम यह है कि वर्तमान में ब्रह्मकमल खत्म होने की कगार पर है क्योंकि जैसे ही इसके फूल खिलते हैं तुरंत तोड़ लिए जाते हैं।

ब्रह्म कमल पुष्प का उपयोग आयुर्वेद में जड़ी-बूटी के रूप में किया जाता है तथा इससे कई प्रकार के रोगों का इलाज भी किया जाता है जिसकी चर्चा हम अगले अंक में करेंगे।

Brahmakamal

You all must have heard the name "Brahma Kamal". The description of "Brahma Kamal" is also found in the Vedas. Brahmakamal is a flower found in the Himalayas and blooms only at night. Its flower closes on its own in the morning. This flower blooms only between 9:00 to 12:30 at night. Seeing it blooming is a sign of good luck. Because of its features, it is popular all over the world and people crave to see it.

24 species of Brahma Kamal are found in the state of Uttarakhand and 210 species are found all over the world. The height of Brahma Kamal plants is 70 to 80 cm. Its white colored flower blooms not only in the twigs but in the form of a bunch of lotus leaves coming out of the yellow leaves. When this flower blooms, the atmosphere is filled with fragrance. The fragrance of Brahma Kamal is very strong.

The Brahma Kamal is grown at a height of 2 km above Kedarnath near the pool of Vasu and at a shrine called Brahma Kamal. Apart from this, flower abundance is found in the Valley of Flowers and Pindari Glacier, Roopkund, Hemkund, Braj Ganga, Valley of Flowers.

This is the only flower which is worshipped. It is believed that the gods themselves reside in it. This flower was named after Lord Brahma. It is believed that a mere sight of this flower fulfills many wishes.

This flower is also mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. Draupadi was anxious to get it because of its intoxicating fragrance. In the forest festival of Mahabharata, it is called Saugandhik flower. According to mythological belief, Lord Vishnu worshiped Kedarnath Jyotirlinga with 1008 Brahmakamal flowers with 1008 names of Shiva and he was called Kamalnayan. He had received the Sudarshan Chakra as a boon. Kedarnath is offered to Shivling and distributed to the visitors in the form of prasad.

The Brahma Kamal flower has no root, that is, it grows from the leaves. It is sown from the leaves. It has to be protected from excess water and heat. Brahma Pushpa is one such flower, which is worshiped for the growth of Mahalakshmi. As we all know that lotus blooms in water (mud), but "Brahma Kamal" never blooms in water. It is a tree, the leaves are large and thick and the flowers are white.

Despite the ban on the sale of Brahma Pushpa, it is sold to pilgrims. Alam is that at present Brahmakamal is on the verge of extinction because as soon as its flowers bloom, they are immediately plucked.

Brahma Kamal flower is used as a herb in Ayurveda and many types of diseases are also treated with it, which we will discuss in the next issue.
