राजा कृष्णदेवराय की उदारता

राजा कृष्णदेव राय तेनालीराम की प्रतिभा से तेनालीरमन को बहुमूल्य उपहार समय-समय पर देते रहते थे। एक बार तेनालीराम को राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने उनकी बुद्धिमत्ता से प्रभावित होकर पांच हाथी सौगात स्वरूप भेंट किए। उपहार पाकर तेनालीरामा बहुत ही सोच में पड़ गए, सोचा कि राजा ने मुझे अचानक ऐसा बहुमूल्य उपहार क्यों दिया?

तेनालीराम इतने धनवान नहीं थे कि सभी हाथियों का खर्च वह अकेले वहन कर सके। क्योंकि हाथियों को खिलाने के लिए बहुत अनाज की आवश्यकता होती थी। तेनाली रामा सिर्फ और सिर्फ अपने परिवार का ही पालन पोषण कर सके, उतने ही सक्षम थे। फिर भी अपने राजा का इनाम इनकार ना करते हुए , पांचों हाथियों को लेकर अपने घर पहुंचे।

हाथियों के साथ तेनाली रमन को देखकर उनकी पत्नी ने तेनालीराम से शिकायत की कि हम घर के सदस्य भी ठीक से रह नहीं पाते तो आप इन हाथियों को रखने का बंदोबस्त कैसे करेंगे? हाथियों की देखभाल करने के लिए नौकर भी तो नहीं रख सकते। हम अपने भोजन की भी व्यवस्था बड़ी मुश्किल से करते हैं, हाथियों के भोजन का बंदोबस्त कैसे करेंगे? यदि हमारे राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने इन हाथियों की जगह पांच गाय भेंट में दी होती तो उसके दूध से हम अपना भरण पोषण तो कर पाते।

तेनालीराम की पत्नी सत्य कह रही थी। तेनालीराम ने हाथियों से पीछा छुड़ाने की योजना बना ली। तेनालीराम ने अपनी पत्नी से कहा कि इन सभी हाथियों को मां देवी के मंदिर में समर्पित कर आता हूं। काली मां के मंदिर पहुंचकर तेनालीराम ने सभी हाथियों को तिलक किया और पांचों हाथियों को नगर में घूमने के लिए छोड़ दिया। हाथियों को भोजन ना मिलने के कारण वे एकदम दुर्बल हो गए। हाथियों को देखकर विजयनगर के वासियों ने राजा को जाकर सभी बात विस्तार पूर्वक बताई।

राजा हाथियों की यह दुर्दशा भरी बात सुनकर तेनाली राम से बड़े ही अप्रसन्न हो गए। तुरंत ही राजा ने तेनालीराम को दरबार में बुलाया और पूछा कि तेनालीराम - "तुमने हाथियों के साथ ऐसा व्यवहार क्यों किया?" आपके दिए हुए उपहार को अस्वीकार करके आपका अपमान मैं नहीं कर सकता था। हाथियों को संभालना मेरे जैसे आम आदमी के बस का काम नहीं है। पांच हाथियों की देखभाल मैं अकेला नहीं कर सकता था, इसी कारण से मैंने पांचो हाथियों को मां देवी के चरणों में समर्पित कर दिया था। अगर आप मुझे पांच हाथियों की जगह पांच गाय उपहार में देते तो वह मेरे परिवार का भरण पोषण करने में सहायता देता।

यदि मैं तुम्हें उपहार के रूप में गाय प्रदान करता तो तुम गायों के साथ भी यह दुर्व्यवहार करते। तेनालीराम ने उत्तर देते हुए कहा , नहीं महाराज गाय तो पवित्र जानवर है। और गाय का दिया हुआ दूध मेरे बच्चे को पालने में मेरे काम आता। उल्टा मैं इसके बदले आपका जीवन भर ऋणी रहता। राजा अपने सेनापति से आदेश देते हुए कहा कि तेनालीराम के पास से हाथियों को लेकर गाय प्रदान की जाए। राजा की इस उदारता को देखकर तेनालीराम बहुत ही प्रसन्न हो गए।

The generosity of King Krishnadevaraya

King Krishnadeva Raya used to give valuable gifts to Tenali Raman from time to time with the talent of Tenalirama. Once Tenaliram was presented with five elephants by King Krishnadeva Raya, impressed by his wisdom. On receiving the gift, Tenalirama was very much thinking that why did the king suddenly give me such a valuable gift?

Tenaliram was not rich enough to bear the expenses of all the elephants alone. Because a lot of grain was needed to feed the elephants. Tenali Rama was able to support his family only and only as much as he could. Still, not denying the reward of his king, he reached his home with the five elephants.

Seeing Tenali Raman with his companions, his wife complained to Tenaliram that even we members of the house are not able to live properly, then how will you make arrangements to keep these elephants? Even servants cannot be hired to take care of elephants. We also arrange our food with great difficulty, how will we arrange food for the elephants? If our king Krishna Deva Raya had given five cows instead of these elephants, we would have been able to feed ourselves with their milk.

Tenaliram's wife was telling the truth. Tenaliram made a plan to get rid of the elephants. Tenaliram told his wife that I would dedicate all these companions to the temple of Mother Goddess. On reaching the temple of Kali Maa, Tenaliram tilaked all the companions and left the five elephants to roam in the city. The elephants became very weak due to lack of food. Seeing these elephants, the people of Vijayanagara went to the king and told everything in detail.

On hearing this plight of the elephants, the king became very displeased with Tenali Rama. Immediately the king called Tenaliram to the court and asked that Tenaliram!! Why did you treat elephants like this? I could not insult you by rejecting your gift. Taking care of colleagues is not the job of common man like me. I could not take care of five elephants alone, for some reason I had dedicated all the five elephants at the feet of Mother Goddess. If you had gifted me five cows instead of five elephants, it would have helped in supporting my family.

Even if I gave you a cow as a gift, you would still do this misbehavior with cows. Responding, he said, No sir, the cow is a holy animal. And the cow's milk would have been useful to me in raising my child. On the contrary, I would have been your nanny for the rest of my life. The king gave orders to his commander and said that a cow should be provided with elephants from Tenaliram. Tenaliram was very pleased to see this generous head of the king.
