शिकारी झाड़ियां

महाराज कृष्णदेव राव हर साल ठंड के मौसम में नगर के बाहर डेरा डाला करते थे। इस दौरान महाराज और उनके कुछ दरबारी व सैनिक उनके साथ तंबू लगाकर रहते थे। राज्य के सभी कामकाज को छोड़कर उन दिनों गीत-संगीत की महफिलें सजती और कभी किस्से कहानियों के दौर चला करते थे।

ऐसी ही एक सुहानी शाम में महाराज के मन में शिकार पर जाने का विचार आया। महाराज ने मंत्रियों से कहकर शिकार की तैयारियां शुरू करवाईं। इसके बाद अगली ही सुबह महाराज अन्य मंत्रियों व कुछ सैनिकों के साथ शिकार के लिए निकलने लगे।

तेनालीराम महाराज के प्रिय थे। अतः महाराज ने तेनालीराम को भी शिकार पर साथ चलने को कहा। महाराज की बात सुनकर एक दरबारी ने कहा - "रहने दीजिए महाराज! तेनालीराम की उम्र हो चली है और अब वह शिकार पर जाएंगे तो जल्दी ही थक जाएंगे।" दरबारी की बात सुनकर सभी हंसने लगे, लेकिन तेनालीराम कुछ नहीं बोले। इतने में महाराज ने तेनालीराम से कहा कि वह दरबारियों की बातों पर ध्यान न दें और उनके साथ शिकार पर चलें।

महाराज के कहने पर तेनालीराम भी एक घोड़े पर सवार होकर काफिले के साथ चल पड़े। कुछ समय बाद महाराज का काफिला जंगल के बीच पहुंच गया। शिकार के लिए नजरें दौड़ाते हुए महाराज को पास ही एक हिरण दिखाई दिया। हिरण पर निशाना साधने के लिए जैसे ही राजा ने तीर कमान पर चढ़ाया हिरण वहां से भागने लगा और महाराज अपने घोड़े पर उसका पीछा करने लगे।

महाराज को हिरण के पीछे जाते देख अन्य दरबारियों के साथ तेनालीराम भी महाराज का पीछा करने लगे। जैसे ही महाराज ने हिरण पर निशाना साधा, वो एक घनी झाड़ियों में जाने लगा। महाराज निशाना लगाने के लिए हिरण के पीछे झाड़ियों में जाने लगे। तभी तेनालीराम ने पीछे से महाराज को रुकने के लिए आवाज दी।

तेनालीराम की आवाज से महाराज का ध्यान भंग हो गया और उनका निशाना चूक गया। हिरण के झाड़ियों में जाते ही महाराज ने पलटकर गुस्से से तेनालीराम को देखा। महाराज ने तेनालीराम को डांटते हुए पूछा कि आखिर उसने उन्हें झाड़ियों में जाने क्यों नहीं दिया। नाराज होते हुए राजा कृष्णदेव ने कहा - "तेनालीराम! आज तुम्हारे चलते हिरण का शिकार नहीं हो पाया।"

महाराज की डांट सुनने पर भी तेनालीराम चुप्पी साधे रहे। महाराज के चुप होने पर तेनालीराम ने एक सैनिक को पेड़ पर चढ़कर झाड़ियों के उस पार देखने को कहा। तेनालीराम के कहने पर सैनिक ने देखा कि वह हिरण जिसका महाराज पीछा कर रहे थे, वो कंटीली झाड़ियों में फंसा हुआ है और बुरी तरह से लहूलुहान है। काफी देर तक प्रयास करने के बाद भी वह हिरण उन कंटीली झाड़ियों से निकल पाया और लड़खड़ाते हुए जंगल की ओर भाग गया।

पेड़ से उतरकर सैनिक ने महाराज को पूरी आंखों देखी सुनाई। सैनिक की बात सुनकर महाराज को बड़ी हैरानी हुई। उन्होंने तेनालीराम को पास बुलाया और उससे पूछा कि क्या उसे पहले से पता था कि वहां कंटीली झाड़ियां हैं। महाराज की बात सुनकर तेनालीराम ने कहा - "महाराज! जंगल में कई ऐसी झाड़ियां होती हैं, जो व्यक्ति को लहूलुहान करके अधमरा छोड़ सकती हैं । मुझे शक था कि आगे ऐसी ही ‘शिकारी झाड़ियां’ हो सकती हैं।"

तेनालीराम की बात सुनकर महाराज उसकी सूझबूझ के एक बार फिर कायल हो गए। महाराज ने अन्य दरबारियों की ओर देखते हुए कहा कि तुम लोग नहीं चाहते थे कि तेनालीराम शिकार पर आए, लेकिन आज उसके ही कारण मेरी जान बची है। महाराज ने तेनालीराम की पीठ थपथपाते हुए कहा कि तुम्हारी बुद्धि और सूझबूझ का कोई मुकाबला नहीं है।

Maharaj Krishnadeva Rao used to camp outside the city every year during the cold season. During this time the Maharaj and some of his courtiers and soldiers lived with him in tents. Leaving all the affairs of the state, in those days, songs and music festivals used to be decorated and sometimes stories used to go round.

On one such pleasant evening the idea of going hunting came in the mind of Maharaj. Maharaj started the preparations for the hunt by asking the ministers. After this, the very next morning Maharaj started going out for hunting along with other ministers and some soldiers.

He was dear to Tenaliram Maharaj. Therefore, the Maharaja asked Tenaliram to accompany him on the hunt. Listening to Maharaj, a courtier said - "Let it be, Maharaj! Tenaliram's age has come and now he will be tired soon if he goes on a hunt." Everyone started laughing after listening to the courtier, but Tenaliram did not say anything. In this, the Maharaja asked Tenaliram to ignore the words of the courtiers and go hunting with them.

At the behest of the Maharaj, Tenaliram also rode on a horse and left with the convoy. After some time Maharaj's convoy reached the middle of the forest. While looking for prey, Maharaj saw a deer nearby. As soon as the king mounted the arrow to target the deer, the deer started running from there and the king started following him on his horse.

Seeing Maharaj going after the deer, Tenaliram along with other courtiers also started following Maharaj. As soon as Maharaj targeted the deer, he started going into a thick bush. Maharaj started going after the deer in the bushes to target. Then Tenaliram gave a voice to Maharaj to stop from behind.

Maharaj's attention was distracted by Tenaliram's voice and he missed his target. As soon as the deer entered the bushes, Maharaj turned and looked at Tenaliram with anger. Maharaj scolded Tenaliram and asked why he did not let him go into the bushes. Angry, King Krishnadeva said - "Tenaliram! Today due to you the deer could not be hunted."

Even after listening to Maharaj's scolding, Tenaliram remained silent. When Maharaj was silent, Tenaliram asked a soldier to climb a tree and look across the bushes. At the behest of Tenaliram, the soldier saw that the deer that Maharaj was chasing was trapped in the thorn bushes and was bleeding badly. Even after trying for a long time, the deer was able to get out of those thorn bushes and staggered and ran towards the forest.

Descending from the tree, the soldier heard the Maharaj with full eyes. Maharaj was very surprised to hear about the soldier. He called Tenaliram nearby and asked him if he already knew that there were thorn bushes there. Listening to Maharaj, Tenaliram said - "Your Majesty! There are many such bushes in the forest, which can leave a person half-dead by bleeding. I doubted that there might be more such 'hunting bushes' in the future."

After listening to Tenaliram, Maharaj was once again convinced of his wisdom. Looking at the other courtiers, Maharaj said that you did not want Tenaliram to come on a hunt, but today my life is saved because of him. The Maharaj patted Tenali Ram on the back and said that there is no match for your intelligence and understanding.
