राजा कृष्णदेव राय पशु-पक्षियों से बहुत प्यार करते थे। एक दिन एक बहेलिया राजदरबार में आया। उसके पास पिंजरे में एक सुंदर व रंगीन विचित्र किस्म का पक्षी था।

वह राजा से बोला, "महाराज! इस सुंदर व विचित्र पक्षी को मैंने कल जंगल से पकड़ा है। यह बहुत मीठा गाता है तथा तोते के समान बोल भी सकता है। यह मोर के समान रंग-बिरंगा ही नहीं है, बल्कि उसके समान नाच कर भी दिखा सकता है। मैं यहां यह पक्षी आपको बेचने के लिए आया हूं।"

राजा ने पक्षी को देखा और बोले, "हां, देखने में यह पक्षी बहुत रंग-बिरंगा और विचित्र है। तुम्हें इसके लिए उपयुक्त मूल्य दिया जाएगा।"

राजा ने बहेलिए को 50 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं दीं और उस पक्षी को अपने महल के बगीचे में रखवाने का आदेश दिया। तभी तेनालीराम अपने स्थान से उठे और बोले, "महाराज! मुझे नहीं लगता कि यह पक्षी बरसात में मोर के समान नृत्य कर सकता है, बल्कि मुझे तो लगता है कि यह पक्षी कई वर्षों से नहाया भी नहीं हैं।"

तेनालीराम की बात सुनकर बहेलिया डर गया और दुखी स्वर में राजा से बोला, "महाराज, मैं एक निर्धन बहेलिया हूं। पक्षियों को पकड़ना और बेचना ही मेरी आजीविका है। अतः मैं समझता हूं कि पक्षियों के बारे में मेरी जानकारी पर बिना किसी प्रमाण के आरोप लगाना अनुचित है। यदि मैं निर्धन हूं तो क्या तेनालीजी को मुझे झूठा कहने का अधिकार मिल गया है?"

बहेलिए की यह बात सुन महाराज भी तेनालीराम से अप्रसन्न होते हुए बोले, "तेनालीराम! तुम्हें ऐसा कहना शोभा नहीं देता। क्या तुम अपनी बात सिद्ध कर सकते हो?"

तेनालीराम बोले, "मैं अपनी बात सिद्ध करना चाहता हूं, महाराज।" यह कहते हुए तेनालीराम ने एक गिलास पानी पक्षी के पिंजरे में गिरा दिया। पक्षी गीला हो गया और सभी दरबारी पक्षी को आश्चर्य से देखने लगे। पक्षी पर गिरा पानी रंगीन हो गया और उसका रंग हल्का भूरा हो गया। राजा तेनालीराम को आश्चर्य से देखने लगे।

तेनालीराम बोले, "महाराज! यह कोई विचित्र पक्षी नहीं है, बल्कि जंगली कबूतर है।"

महाराज  तेनालीराम से बोले, "परंतु तेनालीराम तुम्हें कैसे पता लगा कि यह पक्षी रंगा गया है?"

तेनालीराम बोले, "महाराज! बहेलिए के रंगीन नाखूनों से। पक्षी पर लगे रंग तथा उसके नाखूनों का रंग एक समान है।" अपनी पोल खुलते देख बहेलिया भागने का प्रयास करने लगा, परंतु सैनिकों ने उसे पकड़ लिया।

राजा ने उसे धोखा देने के अपराध में जेल में डाल दिया और उसे दिया गया पुरस्कार अर्थात 50 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं तेनालीराम को दे दिया गया।

English Translate

Rang-Birange Nakhun (Colored Nails)

King Krishnadeva Raya loved animals and birds very much. One day a fowler came to the court. He had a beautiful and colorful strange bird in the cage.

He said to the king, "Your Majesty! I have caught this beautiful and strange bird yesterday from the forest. It sings very sweetly and can speak like a parrot. It is not only as colorful as a peacock, but also dances like a peacock. Can show the tax too. I have come here to sell this bird to you."

The king looked at the bird and said, "Yes, this bird is very colorful and strange to see. You will be paid a suitable price for it."

The king gave 50 gold coins to the fowler and ordered the bird to be kept in the garden of his palace. Then Tenaliram got up from his place and said, "Sir! I don't think this bird can dance like a peacock in the rain, but I think this bird has not even bathed for many years."

On hearing Tenaliram, the fowler got scared and said to the king in a sad voice, "Maharaj, I am a poor fowler. Catching and selling birds is my livelihood. So I understand that my knowledge about birds without any proof. It is unfair to make allegations. If I am poor, has Tenaliji got the right to call me a liar?"

On hearing this talk of the fowler, Maharaj also being displeased with Tenaliram said, "Tenaliram! You do not like to say this. Can you prove your point?"

Tenaliram said, "I want to prove my point, my lord." Saying this, Tenaliram dropped a glass of water into the bird's cage. The bird got wet and all the courtiers looked at the bird in amazement. The water spilled on the bird became colored and its color became light brown. The king looked at Tenaliram in astonishment.

Tenaliram said, "Sir! This is not a strange bird, but a wild pigeon."

Maharaj said to Tenaliram, "But Tenaliram how did you know that this bird has been painted?"

Tenaliram said, "Your Majesty! With the colored nails of the fowler. Seeing his poles open, Fowler tried to run away, but the soldiers caught him.

The king imprisoned him for the crime of cheating and the reward given to him i.e. 50 gold coins was given to Tenaliram.
