महान पुस्तक

एक दिन राजा कृष्णदेव राय अपने दरबारियों तथा मंत्रियों के साथ किसी विषय पर चर्चा कर रहे थे, तभी एक महान विद्वान दरबार में उपस्थित हुआ। उसने सभी विजयनगर वासी को ललकारते हुए अहंकार से कहा: "पुरे विश्व में मेरे जितना कोई बुद्धिमान नहीं हैं। अगर किसी दरबारी की इच्छा हैं कि मेरे साथ किसी भी प्रतियोगिता में खरा उतर सके, तो मैं चुनौती के लिए तैयार हूं।" उसके अहंकार को सच्चा मान कर सभी डर गए और किसी ने भी वाद-विवाद करने का साहस नहीं किया। अंत में सभी प्रजाजन इसका समाधान ढूंढने के लिए पंडित तेनालीराम के पास जा पहुंचे। तेनालीरमन ने पूरी बात सुनी और दरबार में आकर घमंडी का चुनाव स्वीकार करते हुए दिन भी निश्चित कर लिया।

निश्चित किये हुए दिन पर तेनालीराम एक विद्वान पंडित के रूप में राजदरबार पहुंचे। तेनालीराम ने अपने हाथ में एक गट्ठर ले रखा था, जो कि दिखने में पुस्तकों के सामान लग रहा था। उसी समय वो घमंडी भी राजदरबार में उपस्थित हुआ और तेनालीराम के सामने बैठ गया। तेनालीराम ने अपने राजा कृष्णदेवराय को नमस्कार किया और अपने साथ लाए हुए गट्ठर को दोनों के बीच में रख दिया।

इसी के साथ दोनों ही विवाद के लिए पूरी तरह से तैयार थे। राजा कृष्णदेव को पहले से ज्ञात था की तेनालीराम के मन में अवश्य कोई न कोई योजना होगी। इसलिए महाराज निश्चिंत थे। इसी के साथ राजा ने वाद-विवाद प्रारंभ करने लिए दोनों प्रत्योगी को अनुमति दी। तेनालीराम पहले उठे, और उस प्रत्योगी से कहा,"विद्वान! मैंने आपकी बहुत चर्चा सुन रखी है। आप जैसे विद्वान पुरुष के लिए मैं एक पुस्तक लाया हूं। हमारे वाद विवाद का विषय यह पुस्तक होगा।"

विद्वान ने विनती करते हुए तेनालीराम से पुस्तक का नाम जानने की चेस्टा की। तेनालीराम ने पुस्तक का नाम बताया "तिलक्षता महिषा बंधन" उस विद्वान ने अपने जीवन में कभी भी इसके पहले इस पुस्तक का नाम तक नहीं सुना था। पढ़ना तो दूर की बात थी। विद्वान बड़ी ही दुविधा में पड गया। वह सोंचने लगा, कभी न पढ़ी किताब के बारे में विवाद करूं तो कैसे करूं?

फिर भी वह साहस कर के बोला - "यह किताब मैंने पढ़ी है। बहुत ही बेहतरीन है। इस पर चर्चा करने का मजा आने वाला है, परन्तु मेरा एक अनुरोध है कि आज यह वाद-विवाद रोक दिया जाए। मैं कुछ दिन का समय चाहता हूं। मैं इस पुस्तक की कुछ महत्वपूर्ण बातें भूल गया हूं। उस विद्वान ने राजा से विनती की कि कल प्रातःकाल को इस विवाद का आयोजन किया जाए।

"अतिथि देवो भव:" की परंपरा के अनुसार अतिथी के विचार को मानना तेनालीराम का कर्तव्य था। परन्तु विद्वान को आभास था कि वाद-विवाद में वह हार जाएगा। उसे पता था की पंडित के सामने मेरी एक न चलेगी। इसलिए वह नगर छोड़ कर भाग गया।

अगले दिन विद्वान की राजमहल में गैरमौजूदगी से तेनालीराम ने राजा से भरी सभा में कहा: महाराज! लगता है घमंडी हारने के डर से विजयनगर छोड़ के भाग गया।

राजा ने तेनालीरामा से आश्चर्य से पूछा, " तेनालीराम पहले तुम हमें उस पुस्तक के बारे में बताओ जिसे देख कर वह विद्वान नगर छोड़ कर भाग गया।" तेनालीरमन ने हंसते हुए कहा, महाराज! असल में ऐसी कोई पुस्तक है ही नहीं। यह मेरी बनाई हुई योजना थी।

वास्तव में तिलक्षता का मतलब है - शीशम की सुखी लकडियां और महिषा बंधन का अर्थ है - भैंसों को बांधना। वास्तव में मेरे हाथ में शीशम की लकड़ियां थी, जो भैंसों को बांधने वाली रस्सी से बाँधी गई थी। मलमल के कपड़े की वजह से पुस्तक जैसी लग रही थी। तेनाली राम ली बुद्धिमत्ता देख कर सब नगरवासी हंसी न रोक पाए और तेनालीराम ने एक बार फिर विजयनगर की शान बचाई। राजा ने प्रशन्न हो कर कई सारी पुस्तकें तेनालीराम को सौगात के रूप में दी।

One day King Krishna Deva Raya was discussing a matter with his courtiers and ministers, when a great scholar appeared in the court. He arrogantly challenged all the Vijayanagara residents: "There is no one in the whole world as intelligent as me. If any courtier wishes to compete with me in any competition, I am up for the challenge." Considering his ego to be true, everyone got scared and no one dared to argue. In the end, all the people went to Pandit Tenaliram to find a solution for this. Tenaliraman listened to the whole thing and came to the court and accepted the election of the arrogant and fixed the day.

On the appointed day, Tenaliram reached the court as a learned Pandit. Tenaliram held a bundle in his hand, which looked like a book. At the same time that arrogant also appeared in the court and sat in front of Tenaliram. Tenalirama saluted his king Krishnadevaraya and placed the bundle he had brought in between the two.

With this, both were completely ready for controversy. King Krishnadeva knew in advance that Tenaliram must have some plan in his mind. So the king was restless. With this, the king gave permission to both the contestants to start the debate. Tenaliram got up first, and said to the contestant, "Scholar! I have heard your discussion a lot. I have brought a book for a learned man like you. This book will be the subject of our debate."

The scholar pleaded with Tenaliram to know the name of the book. Tenaliram named the book as "Tilakshata Mahisha Bandhan". That scholar had never even heard the name of this book before in his life. Reading was a far cry. The scholar was in great dilemma. He started thinking, how can I dispute about the book I have never read?

Still he boldly said - "I have read this book. It is very good. It is going to be fun to discuss, but I have a request that this debate should be stopped today. I will have a few days' time." I have forgotten some important things of this book. The scholar requested the king to organize this dispute tomorrow morning.

According to the tradition of "Atithi Devo Bhava" it was the duty of Tenaliram to accept the idea of the guest. But the scholar had a feeling that he would be defeated in the debate. He knew that my one would not work in front of the pandit. So he left the city and fled.

The next day, in the absence of the scholar in the palace, Tenaliram said in a meeting full of the king: Maharaj! The arrogant seems to have left Vijayanagara for fear of being defeated.

The king asked Tenalirama in surprise, "Tenalirama first you tell us about the book, seeing which the scholar fled the city." Tenaliraman laughed and said, Maharaj! Actually there is no such book. This was my plan.

Actually Tilakshta means - dry rosewood sticks and Mahisha Bandhan means - tying buffaloes. In fact, I had rosewood sticks in my hand, which were tied with a rope to bind buffaloes. The muslin cloth made it look like a book. Seeing the wisdom of Tenali Rama, all the townspeople could not stop laughing and Tenaliram once again saved the glory of Vijayanagara. The king was pleased and gave many books to Tenaliram as a gift.
