चेन्ना केशव मंदिर बेलूर (कर्नाटक)

चेन्ना केशव का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर कर्नाटक के बेलूर में स्थित है।

इतिहास

होयसल वंशीय नरेश विष्णुवर्धन का 1117 में बनवाया हुआ चन्नाकेशव का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर बेलूर की ख्याति का कारण है। यह मंदिर स्थापत्य एवं मूर्तिकला की दृष्टि से भारत के सर्वोत्तम मंदिरों में से है।बाहरी आक्रमणकारियों ने इस मंदिर को कई बार लूटा किंतु हिंदू नरेशों ने बार-बार इसका जीर्णोद्धार करवाया।

स्थापत्य विशेषताएं

मंदिर 178 फुट लंबा और 156 फुट चौड़ा है परकोटे में तीन प्रवेश द्वार हैं, जिनमें सुंदर मूर्तिकारी है इसमें अनेक प्रकार की मूर्तियां जैसे हाथी, पौराणिक जीव जंतु, मालाएं, स्त्रियां आदि उत्कीर्ण हैं।

प्रवेश द्वार

मंदिर का पूर्वी प्रवेश द्वार सर्वश्रेष्ठ है। यहां पर रामायण तथा महाभारत के अनेक दृश्य अंकित हैं। मंदिर में 40 वातायन हैं,जिनमें से कुछ के पर्दे जालीदार हैं और कुछ में रेखा गणित की आकृतियां बनी हैं। अनेक खिड़कियों में पुराणों तथा विष्णुवर्धन की राज्यसभा के दृश्य हैं। मंदिर की संरचना दक्षिण भारत के अनेक मंदिरों की भांति तारा कार है। इसके स्तंभों के शीर्षाधार नारी मूर्तियों के रूप में निर्मित है और अपनी सुंदर रचना, सुक्ष्म तक्षण और अलंकरण में भारत भर में बेजोड़ कहे जाते हैं। यह नारी मूर्तियां मदनकई (मदनिका) नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं। गिनती में ये 38 हैं, 34 बाहर और शेष अंदर। ये लगभग 2 फुट ऊंची हैं और इन पर उत्कृष्ट प्रकार की श्वेत पालिश है, जिसके कारण ये मोम की बनी हुई जान पड़ती है।

मूर्तियों के भिन्न-भिन्न भाव भंगिमाओं के अंकन के लिए उन्हें कई प्रकार की क्रियाओं में संलग्न  दिखाया गया है। एक स्त्री अपनी हथेली पर अवस्थित शुक को बोलना सिखा रही है। दूसरी धनुष संधान करती हुई प्रदर्शित है। तीसरी बांसुरी बजा रही है, चौथी केश-प्रसाधन में व्यस्त है,पांचवी सद्य: स्नाता नायिका अपने बालों को सुखा रही है, छठी अपने पति को तांबूल प्रदान कर रही है, और सातवीं नृत्य की विशिष्ट मुद्रा में है।इन कृतियों के अतिरिक्त वानर से अपने वस्त्रों को बचाते हुए युद्ध वाद्य यंत्र बजाते हुए मध्य विमला यह सभी मूर्ति चित्र बहुत ही सौभाग्य था भावपूर्ण है। एक अन्य मनोरंजक दृश्य एक सुंदरी बाला का है जो अपने परिधान में छुपे हुए बिच्छू को हटाने के लिए बड़े संभ्रम में अपने कपड़े झटक रही है। उसकी भयभीत मुद्रा का अंकन मूर्तिकार ने बड़े कौशल से किया है उसकी दाहिनी भौंह बड़े बांके रूप में ऊपर की ओर उठ गई हैं और डर से उसके समस्त शरीर में तनाव का बोध होता है।

कला की चरमावस्था

मंदिर के भीतर के शीर्षाधार मूर्तियों में देवी सरस्वती का उत्कृष्ट मूर्ति चित्र देखते ही बनता है। देवी नित्य मुद्रा में है जो विद्या की अधिष्ठात्री के लिए सर्वथा नई बात है। इस मूर्ति की विशिष्ट कला की अभिव्यंजना इसकी गुरुत्वाकर्षण रेखा की अनोखी रचना में है। यदि मूर्ति के सिर पर पानी डाला जाए तो वह नासिका से नीचे होकर वाम पार्श्व से होता हुआ खुली वाम हथेली में आकर गिरता है और वहां से दाहिने पांव में नृत्य मुद्रा में स्थित तलवे (जो गुरुत्वाकर्षण रेखा का आधार है) में होता हुआ बाएं पांव पर गिर जाता है। वास्तव में, होयसल वास्तु विशारदों ने इन कलाकृतियों के निर्माण में मूर्तिकारी की कला को चरमावस्था पर पहुंचाकर उन्हें संसार की सर्वश्रेष्ठ शिल्पकृतियों में उच्च स्थान का अधिकारी बना दिया है। 1433 ईस्वी में ईरान के यात्री अब्दुल रज्जाक ने इस मंदिर के बारे में लिखा था कि 'वह इसके शिल्प के वर्णन करते हुए डरता था कि कहीं उसके प्रशंसात्मक कथन को लोग अतिशयोक्ति ना समझ लें'।

गर्भ गृह

मंडप का पश्चिमी भाग गर्भगृह की ओर ले जाता है। गर्भगृह के भीतर आप चतुर्भुज मुद्रा में भगवान विष्णु की ६ फुट ऊंची तथा नाना प्रकार से अलंकृत अत्यंत नयनाभिराम प्रतिमा देख सकते हैं। मनमोहक प्रभामंडल युक्त यह प्रतिमा एक ३ फुट ऊंची पीठिका पर स्थापित है। भगवान विष्णु ने अपने ऊपरी दोनों हाथों में शंख एवं चक्र धारण किया हुआ है तथा निचले दोनों हाथों में कमल तथा गदा धारण किया है। उनके प्रभामंडल पर भगवान विष्णु के दस अवतारों की चक्रीय उत्कीर्णन की गई है।

भगवान विष्णु की प्रतिमा दोनों ओर से उनकी शक्तियों की प्रतिमाओं से घिरी हुई है। वे हैं श्रीदेवी तथा भूदेवी। प्रवेशद्वार के ऊपर भगवान विष्णु तथा देवी लक्ष्मी की मूर्तियाँ हैं। द्वार के दोनों ओर दो द्वारपालों की अत्यंत अलंकृत तथा सूक्ष्मता से उत्कीर्णित भव्य प्रतिमाएं हैं। इनके नाम हैं जय तथा विजय।

The famous temple of Chenna Keshava is located in Belur, Karnataka.

History

The famous temple of Channakeshava, built by the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana in 1117, is the reason for Belur's fame. This temple is one of the best temples in India in terms of architecture and sculpture. The outside invaders looted this temple many times but Hindu kings got it renovated again and again.

architectural features

The temple is 178 feet long and 156 feet wide. The park has three entrances, which have beautiful sculptures, in which many types of sculptures like elephants, mythological creatures, garlands, women etc. are engraved.

Entry Gate

The eastern entrance of the temple is the best. Many scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are inscribed here. The temple has 40 Vayayans, some of which have net curtains and some have figures of Rekha maths. Many windows have scenes from the Puranas and the Rajya Sabha of Vishnuvardhana. The structure of the temple is a star car like many temples of South India. The heads of its pillars are built in the form of female sculptures and are said to be unmatched across India in their beautiful composition, fine detailing and ornamentation. These female idols are famous by the name Madankai (Madnika). These are 38 in count, 34 outside and the rest inside. They are about 2 feet high and have a fine white finish, due to which they appear to be made of wax.

To mark the different expressions of the idols, they are shown to be engaged in many types of activities. A woman is teaching the Shuka on her palm to speak. The second bow is shown doing meditation. The third is playing the flute, the fourth is busy with hairdressing, the fifth Sadya: the bathing heroine drying her hair, the sixth offering the tambool to her husband, and the seventh in the typical dance posture. While saving his clothes from Madhya Vimala playing a war instrument, all these idol images were very fortunate, are soulful. Another gripping scene is of Bala, a beauty queen who is in great confusion twirling her clothes to remove the scorpion hidden in her dress. His fearful posture has been marked with great skill by the sculptor, his right brow has raised upwards in the form of a big left and there is a sense of tension in his whole body due to fear.

In the Shirshadhar idols inside the temple, an exquisite image of Goddess Saraswati is made on seeing it. The goddess is in constant posture, which is a completely new thing for the master of learning. The expression of the distinctive art of this idol is in the unique composition of its gravity line. If water is poured on the head of the idol, it falls in the open left palm, passing through the left side of the nostril and from there on the right foot in the dance posture on the soles (which is the base of the line of gravity) on the left foot. But falls. In fact, the Hoysala architectural masters have brought the art of sculpting to its peak in the making of these artifacts, making them worthy of a high place among the best sculptures of the world. In 1433 AD, the Iranian traveler Abdul Razzaq wrote about this temple that 'he was afraid that while describing its craft, people might consider his praiseworthy statement as an exaggeration'.

sanctum

The western side of the mandapa leads to the sanctum sanctorum. Inside the sanctum sanctorum you can see the 6 feet high and variously decorated very panoramic statue of Lord Vishnu in a quadrangular posture. This statue with an enchanting aura is installed on a 3 feet high pedestal. Lord Vishnu holds a conch shell and a chakra in his upper two hands and a lotus and mace in his lower two hands. The ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu have been cyclically engraved on his aura.

The idol of Lord Vishnu is surrounded by statues of his powers from both the sides. They are Sridevi and Bhudevi. Above the entrance are the idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. On either side of the gate are magnificent statues of the two gatekeepers, highly ornate and finely engraved. Their names are Jai and Vijay.
