बाबापुर की रामलीला

हर वर्ष दशहरे से पूर्व काशी की नाटक मंडली विजयनगर आती थी। प्रतिवर्ष वे राजा कृष्णदेव राय तथा विजयनगर की प्रजा के लिए रामलीला किया करते थे। पर इस बार राजा को सूचना मिली कि नाटक मंडली के कई सदस्यों के  बीमार हो जाने के कारण नाटक मंडली  विजयनगर नहीं आ रही है। 

यह सूचना पाकर राजा बहुत दुःखी हुए, क्योंकि दशहरे में अब कुछ ही दिन बाकी थे। इतने कम दिनों में दूसरी नाटक मंडली की भी व्यवस्था नहीं की जा सकती थी। पास में दूसरी कोई नाटक मंडली नहीं होने के कारण इस वर्ष रामलीला होने के आसार दिखाई नहीं पड़ रहे थे। दशहरे से पूर्व रामलीला होना विजयनगर की पुरानी संस्कृति थी। महाराज इस परंपरा को छोड़ना नहीं चाहते थे। महाराज को इस तरह दुःखी देखकर राजगुरु बोले - "महाराज, यदि चाहें तो हम रामपुर के कलाकारों को संदेश भेज सकते हैं?"

राजा ने निराश स्वर में कहा - "परंतु, इसमें तो कुछ सप्ताह का समय लगेगा।"

इस पर तेनालीराम बोले - "महाराज, मैं पास की ही एक मंडली को जानता हूं, वे यहां दो दिन में आ जाएंगे और मुझे विश्वास है कि वे रामलीला का अच्छा प्रदशन करेंगे।"

यह सुनकर राजा प्रसन्न हो गए और तेनालीराम को मंडली को बुलाने की जिम्मेदारी सौंप दी गई। साथ ही मंडली के रहने व खाने-पीने की व्यवस्था का भार भी तेनालीरमन के ही सुपुर्द कर दिया गया। शीघ्र ही रामलीला के लिए सारी व्यवस्था होनी शुरू हो गई। रामलीला मैदान को साफ किया गया। एक बड़ा-सा मंच बनाया गया। नवरात्र के लिए नगर को सजाया गया।

रामलीला देखने के लिए लोग बहुत उत्सुक थे, क्योंकि इसके पूर्व काशी की नाटक मंडली के न आने की सूचना से वे काफी दुःखी थे, परंतु अब नई नाटक मंडली के आने की सूचना से उनका उत्साह् दोगुना हो गया था। महल के निकट एक मेला भी लगाया गया था।

कुछ ही दिनों में मंडली रामलीला के लिए तैयार हो गई। राजा, दरबारी, मंत्री व प्रजा प्रतिदिन रामलीला देखने आते। दशहरे के दिन की अंतिम कड़ी तो बहुत ही सराहनीय थी। मंडली में अधिकतर कलाकार बच्चे थे। उनकी कलाकारी देखकर लोगों की आंखों में आंसू तक आ गए।

दशहरे के पश्चात राजा ने कुछ मंत्रियों तथा मंडली के सदस्यों को महल में भोजन के लिए बुलाया। भोजन के बाद राजा ने मंडली के सदस्यों को पुरस्कार दिया। फिर वे तेनालीराम से पूछे  - "तुम्हें इतनी अच्छी मंडली कैसे मिली?"

तेनालीराम ने उत्तर दिया - "बाबापुर से महाराज।"

राजा कृष्णदेव ने आश्चर्य से पूछा - "बाबापुर! यह कहां है? मैंने इसके विषय में कभी नहीं सुना।"

तेनालीराम बोले - "बाबापुर विजयनगर के पास ही एक गाँव है महाराज।"

तेनालीराम की बात सुनकर मंडली के कलाकार हँस पड़े। राजा ने उनसे उनके इस प्रकार हँसने का कारण पूछा, तो मंडली का एक छोटा बालक सदस्य बोला - "महाराज, वास्तव में हम लोग विजयनगर से ही आए हैं। तेनाली बाबा ने तीन दिन में हमें यह नाटक करना सिखाया था। इसलिए इसे हम बाबापुर की रामलीला कहते हैं।"

यह सुनकर राजा भी खिलखिलाकर हंस पड़े। अब उन्हें भी बाबापुर के रहस्य का पता चल गया था।

Ramlila of Babapur

Every year before Dussehra, the drama troupe of Kashi used to come to Vijayanagar. Every year he used to perform Ramlila for King Krishnadeva Raya and the subjects of Vijayanagara. But this time the king got information that the drama troupe was not coming to Vijayanagar due to the ill health of several members of the drama troupe.

The king was very sad to hear this information, because only a few days were left for Dussehra. In such a short time, even another drama troupe could not be arranged. As there was no other drama troupe nearby, chances of Ramlila happening this year were not visible. Having Ramlila before Dussehra was the old culture of Vijayanagara. Maharaj did not want to leave this tradition. Seeing Maharaj so sad, Rajguru said - "Maharaj, if we want, can we send a message to the artists of Rampur?"

The king said in a disappointed tone - "But, it will take a few weeks."

On this Tenaliram said - "Maharaj, I know a troupe nearby, they will come here in two days and I am sure they will perform well in Ramlila."

The king was pleased to hear this and Tenaliram was entrusted with the responsibility of convening the congregation. Along with this, the burden of arranging for the living and food of the congregation was also handed over to Tenaliraman himself. Soon all the arrangements started for Ramlila. Ramlila ground was cleaned. A big stage was built. The city was decorated for Navratri.

People were very eager to see Ramlila, because before that they were very sad about the news of Kashi's drama troupe not coming, but now their enthusiasm was doubled with the news of new drama troupe coming. A fair was also organized near the palace.

Within a few days the troupe got ready for Ramlila. The kings, courtiers, ministers and subjects would come to see Ramlila every day. The last episode of the day of Dussehra was very commendable. Most of the actors in the troupe were children. Tears came to people's eyes after seeing his artwork.

After Dussehra, the king invited some ministers and members of the congregation for a meal in the palace. After the meal, the king gave prizes to the members of the congregation. Then he asked Tenaliram - "How did you get such a good troupe?"

Tenaliram replied - "Maharaj from Babapur."

King Krishnadeva asked in surprise - "Babapur! Where is it? I have never heard of it."

Tenaliram said - "There is a village near Babapur Vijaynagar, Maharaj."

The cast of the troupe laughed hearing Tenaliram's words. When the king asked him the reason for his laughing like this, a small boy member of the troupe said - "Maharaj, actually we have come from Vijayanagar. Tenali Baba taught us to perform this drama in three days. So we call it Babapur. That's called Ramlila."

Hearing this, the king also burst into laughter. Now they also came to know about the secret of Babapur.
