सुनहरा पौधा

तेनालीराम हर बार अपने दिमाग का इस्तेमाल करके ऐसा कुछ करते थे कि विजय नगर के महाराज कृष्णदेव हैरान रह जाते थे। इस बार उन्होंने एक तरकीब से राजा को अपने फैसले पर दोबारा विचार करने को मजबूर कर दिया।

एक बार हुआ यूं कि राजा कृष्णदेव किसी काम के चलते कश्मीर गए। वहां उन्हें एक सुनहरे रंग का खिलने वाला फूल दिखा। वो फूल महाराज को इतना पसंद आया कि वो अपने राज्य विजयनगर लौटते समय उसका एक पौधा अपने साथ लेकर आए।

महल पहुंचते ही उन्होंने माली को बुलाया। माली के आते ही महाराज ने उससे कहा,"देखो! इस पौधे को हमारे बगीचे में ऐसी जगह लगाना कि मैं इसे अपने कमरे से रोज देख सकूं। इसमें सुनहरे रंग के फूल खिलेंगे, जो मुझे काफी पसंद हैं। इस पौधे का काफी ख्याल रखना। अगर इसे कुछ भी हुआ, तो तुम्हें प्राण दंड भी मिल सकता है।" माली ने सिर हिलाते हुए पौधा लिया और उनके कमरे से दिखने वाली जगह में उसे लगा दिया। दिन - रात माली उस फूल का खूब ख्याल रखता था। दिन जैसे ही बीतते गए उसमें सुनहरे फूल खिलने लगे। राजा उठते ही प्रतिदिन सबसे पहले उसे देखते और फिर दरबार जाते थे। अगर किसी दिन राजा को महल से बाहर जाना पड़ता था, तो उस फूल को न देख पाने के कारण उनका मन दुखी हो जाता था। एक दिन जब राजा सुबह उस फूल को देखने के लिए अपनी खिड़की पर आए, तो उन्हें वो फूल दिखा ही नहीं। तभी उन्होंने माली को बुलवाया।

महाराज ने माली से पूछा,"वो पौधा कहा गया। मुझे उसके फूल क्यों दिख नहीं रहे हैं।"

जवाब में माली ने कहा,"साहब! उसे कल शाम को मेरी बकरी खा गई।"

इस बात को सुनते ही उनका गुस्सा सातवें आसमान पर पहुंच गया। उन्होंने सीधे राजमाली को दो दिन बाद मौत की सजा सुनाने का आदेश दे दिया। तभी वहां सैनिक आए और उसे जेल में डाल दिया। माली की पत्नी को जैसे ही इस बारे में पता चला, वो दरबार में राजा से फरियाद करने पहुंची। गुस्से में महाराज ने उसकी एक बात न सुनी। रोते-रोते वो दरबार से जाने लगी। तभी एक व्यक्ति ने उसे तेनालीराम से मिलने की सलाह दी।

रोते हुए माली की पत्नी ने तेनालीराम को अपने पति को मिली मौत की सजा और उस सुनहरे फूल के बारे में बताया। उसकी सारी बात सुनकर तेनालीराम ने उसे समझा-बुझाकर घर भेज दिया।

अगले दिन गुस्से में माली की पत्नी उस सुनहरा फूल खाने वाली बकरी को चौराहे पर ले जाकर डंडे से पीटने लगती है। ऐसा करते-करते बकरी अधमरी हो गई। विजयनगर राज्य में पशुओं के साथ इस तरह का व्यवहार करना मना था। इसे क्रूरता माना जाता था, इसलिए कुछ लोगों ने माली की पत्नी की इस हरकत की शिकायत नगर कोतवाल में कर दी। सारा मामला जानने के बाद नगर कोतवाल के सिपाहियों को पता चला कि यह सब माली को मिले दंड की वजह से वो गुस्से में कर रही है। यह जानते ही सिपाही इस मामले को दरबार में लेकर गए।

महाराज कृष्णराज ने पूछा कि तुम एक जानवर के साथ इतना बुरा व्यवहार कैसे कर सकती हो?

"ऐसी बकरी, जिसके कारण मेरा पूरा घर उजड़ने वाला है।मेरे बच्चे अनाथ होने वाले हैं। उस बकरी के साथ कैसा व्यवहार करूं महाराज।" माली की पत्नी ने जवाब दिया।

राजा कृष्णराज ने कहा, "तुम्हारी बात का मतलब मैं समझ नहीं पाया। ये बेजुबान जानवर तुम्हारा घर कैसे उजाड़ सकता है?" उसने बताया, " महाराज! ये वही बकरी है, जिसने आपके सुनहरे पौधे को खा लिया था। इसकी वजह से आपने मेरे पति को मौत की सजा सुना दी है। गलती तो इस बकरी की थी, लेकिन सजा मेरे पति को मिल रही है। सजा असल में इस बकरी को मिलनी चाहिए, इसलिए मैं इसे डंडे से पीट रही थी।"

अब महाराज को यह बात समझ आई कि गलती माली की नहीं, बल्कि बकरी की थी। यह समझते ही उन्होंने माली की पत्नी से पूछा कि तुम्हारे पास इतनी बुद्धि कैसे आई कि इस तरह से मेरी गलती के बारे में समझा सको। उसने कहा कि महाराज, मुझे रोने के अलावा कुछ भी नहीं सूझ रहा था। यह सब मुझे पंडित तेनालीराम जी ने समझाया है।

एक बार फिर राजा कृष्णराय को तेनालीराम पर गर्व महसूस हुआ और उन्होंने कहा कि तेनालीराम तुमने मुझे एक बार फिर बड़ी गलती करने से रोक दिया। यह कहते ही महाराज ने माली का मृत्यु दंड का फैसला वापस लेते हुए उसे जेल से रिहा करने का आदेश दिया। साथ ही तेनालीराम को उनकी बुद्धि के लिए पचास हजार (50,000) स्वर्ण मुद्राएं उपहार के रूप में दीं।

Tenaliram used to use his mind every time to do such a thing that the Maharaja of Vijayanagara, Krishnadev was astonished. This time he forced the king to reconsider his decision with an idea.

Once it happened that King Krishnadev went to Kashmir due to some work. There he saw a golden blooming flower. Maharaj liked that flower so much that while returning to his kingdom, Vijayanagara, he brought a plant of it with him.

As soon as he reached the palace, he called the gardener. As soon as the gardener came, the Maharaj said to him, "Look! Put this plant in our garden in such a way that I can see it everyday from my room. It will bloom golden colored flowers, which I like very much. Take good care of this plant." If anything happens to it, you can even get the death penalty." The gardener, nodding his head, took the plant and planted it in a place visible from his room. Day and night the gardener used to take great care of that flower. As the days passed, golden flowers started blooming. As soon as the king got up, he used to see him first and then go to the court. If someday the king had to go out of the palace, his heart would get sad because he could not see that flower. One day when the king came to his window to see that flower in the morning, he did not even see that flower. Then he called the gardener.

Maharaj asked the gardener, "That plant was called. Why I can't see its flowers."

In response the gardener said, "Sir! He was eaten by my goat last evening."

On hearing this, his anger reached the seventh heaven. He directly ordered Rajmali to be sentenced to death two days later. Then the soldiers came there and put him in jail. As soon as the gardener's wife came to know about this, she reached the court to complain to the king. In anger, Maharaj did not listen to him. She started leaving the court crying. Then a person advised him to meet Tenaliram.

The weeping gardener's wife told Tenaliram about her husband's death sentence and the golden flower. Hearing all his words, Tenaliram persuaded him and sent him home.

The next day, in a fit of anger, the gardener's wife takes that golden flower-eating goat to the crossroads and starts beating her with a stick. While doing so, the goat became half-hearted. Such treatment of animals was forbidden in the Vijayanagara kingdom. This was considered cruelty, so some people complained about this action of the gardener's wife to the city Kotwal. After knowing the whole matter, the soldiers of the city Kotwal came to know that she is doing all this in anger because of the punishment received by the gardener. Knowing this, the soldiers took the matter to the court.

Maharaj Krishnaraj asked how can you treat an animal so badly?

"Such a goat, because of which my whole house is going to be destroyed. My children are going to be orphans. How should I deal with that goat, sir?" The gardener's wife replied.

King Krishnaraj said, "I could not understand what you meant. How can this wild animal ruin your house?" He said, "Maharaj! This is the same goat that ate your golden sapling. Because of this you have sentenced my husband to death. It was the goat's fault, but my husband is getting the punishment." Actually this goat should be punished, so I was beating it with a stick."

Now Maharaj understood that the fault was not of the gardener but of the goat. On realizing this, he asked the gardener's wife that how did you get so much wisdom to explain my mistake in this way. He said that sir, I could not understand anything except crying. All this has been explained to me by Pandit Tenaliram ji.

Once again King Krishnaraya felt proud of Tenaliram and said that Tenaliram you once again stopped me from making a big mistake. As soon as this was said, the Maharaja ordered to release Mali from jail, withdrawing his death sentence. He also gave fifty thousand gold coins as a gift to Tenaliram for his wisdom.
