एक बार राजा कृष्णदेव राय अपने दरबारियों के साथ विभिन्न विषयों पर चर्चा कर रहे थे। चर्चा करते-करते अचानक बात चतुराई पर होने लगी। महाराज कृष्णदेव राय के दरबार में राजगुरु से लेकर कई अन्य दरबारी तेनालीराम से जलते थे। ऐसे में, तेनालीराम को नीचा दिखाने के लिए एक मंत्री दरबार में बोल पड़ा कि, "महाराज! दरबार में एक से बढ़कर एक बुद्धिमान और चतुर लोग मौजूद हैं और अगर मौका दिया जाए, तो हम सभी अपनी चतुराई आपके सामने पेश कर सकते हैं, किंतु?"

महाराज कृष्णदेव ने हैरत में पड़ते हुए पूछा, "किन्तु क्या मंत्री जी?"

इस पर सेनापति बोले, "महाराज! मैं आपको बताता हूं कि मंत्री जी के मन में क्या बात है? दरअसल, इस दरबार में तेनालीराम के अलावा किसी को भी अपनी चतुराई साबित करने का मौका नहीं दिया जाता है। हर बार तेनालीराम ही चतुराई का श्रेय ले जाते हैं, तो ऐसे में दरबार के बाकी लोग अपनी योग्यता कैसे दिखा सकते हैं?"

महाराज कृष्णदेव राय सेनापति की बात सुनकर समझ गए कि दरबार के सभी लोग तेनालीरामा के विरोध में उतर आए हैं। इसके बाद महाराज कुछ देर शांत रहे और मन ही मन विचार करने लगे। तभी महाराज की नजर भगवान की मूर्ति के सामने जल रही धूपबत्ती पर गई। धूपबत्ती को देखकर महाराज के मन में सभी दरबारियों की परीक्षा लेने का विचार आया। उन्होंने तुरंत कहा, "आप सभी दरबारियों को अपनी चतुराई साबित करने का एक मौका जरूर दिया जाएगा। जब तक सभी दरबारी अपनी चतुराई साबित नहीं कर देते, तेनालीरमन बीच में नहीं आएगा।"

यह सुनकर दरबार में मौजूद लोग खुश हो गए। उन्होंने कहा, "ठीक है महाराज! आप बताएं कि हमें क्या करना होगा?" राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने धूपबत्ती की तरफ उंगली दिखाते हुए कहा कि मेरे लिए दो हाथ धुआं लेकर आओ। जो भी यह काम कर पाएगा, उसे तेनालीराम से अधिक बुद्धिमान समझा जाएगा।" महाराज की बात सुनकर सभी दरबारी सोच में पड़ गए और आपस में चर्चा करने लगे कि यह कैसे संभव है? भला धुएं को नापा जा सकता है क्या? इसके बाद अपनी चतुराई साबित करने के लिए सभी दरबारियों ने अपना हाथ आजमाया, लेकिन कोई भी धुआं नाप नहीं पाया। जैसे ही कोई धुएं को नापने की कोशिश करता, धुआं उनके हाथों से निकलकर उड़ जाता।

जब सभी दरबारियों ने हार मान ली, तब उनमें से एक दरबारी बोला कि, "महाराज! हमारे हिसाब से धुएं को नापा नहीं जा सकता है। हां, अगर तेनालीराम ऐसा कर पाए, तो हम उन्हें अपने से भी अधिक बुद्धिमान मान लेंगे, लेकिन अगर वह ऐसा नहीं कर पाए, तो आपको उन्हें हमारे जैसा ही समझना होगा।" 

राजा मुस्कुराते हुए बोले, "क्यों तेनालीराम! क्या तुम तैयार हो?" इस पर तेनालीराम ने सिर झुकाते हुए कहा, "महाराज! मैंने हमेशा आपके आदेश का पालन किया है। इस बार भी जरूर करूंगा। इसके बाद तेनालीराम ने एक सेवक को बुलाया और उसके कान में कुछ कहा। उनकी बात सुनकर सेवक तुरंत दरबार से बाहर चला गया। दरबार में चारों ओर चुप्पी छा गई। सभी यह देखने के लिए उतावले हुए जा रहे थे कि आखिर कैसे तेनालीराम राजा को दो हाथ धुंआ देते हैं? तभी सबकी नजर सेवक पर पड़ी, जो शीशे की बनी दो हाथ लंबी नली लेकर दरबार में वापस आया था।

तेनालीराम ने उस शीशे की नली का मुंह धूपबत्ती से निकलते धुएं पर लगा दिया। थोड़ी ही देर में शीशे की पूरी नली धुएं से भर गई और तेनाली ने जल्दी से नली के मुंह पर कपड़ा लगाकर उसे बंद कर दिया और उसे महाराज की तरफ करते हुए कहा, "महाराज! यह लीजिए दो हाथ धुआं।" यह देख महाराज के चेहरे पर मुस्कान आ गई और उन्होंने तेनालीराम से नली लेकर दरबारियों की ओर देखा।

सभी के सिर तेनालीराम की चतुराई देखकर शर्म से नीचे झुके हुए थे। वहां कुछ दरबारी तेनालीराम के पक्ष में भी थे। उन सब की आंखों में तेनालीराम के लिए सम्मान था। तेनालीराम की बुद्धिमानी और चतुराई देखकर, राजा बोले, "अब तो आप लोग यह समझ गए होंगे कि तेनालीराम की बराबरी करना संभव नहीं है।" इसके जवाब में दरबारी कुछ भी बोल न सकें और उन लोगों ने चुपचाप सिर झुका लिया।

कहानी से सीख :

हमें दूसरों की बुद्धिमता का सम्मान करना चाहिए और किसी की चतुराई से जलन नहीं करनी चाहिए।

Maharaj Krishnadev asked in amazement, "But what minister?"

On this the commander said, "Your Majesty! Let me tell you what is in the mind of the minister? Actually, in this court no one is given a chance to prove his cleverness except Tenaliram. Every time Tenaliram is the one who is the master of cleverness." If the credit is taken, then how can the rest of the people of the court show their merit?"

Maharaj Krishnadeva Raya understood by listening to the commander that all the people of the court had come down against Tenalirama. After this Maharaj remained calm for some time and started thinking in his mind. Then Maharaj's eyes went to the incense stick burning in front of the idol of God. Seeing the incense stick, the idea of ​​taking the test of all the courtiers came in the mind of Maharaj. He immediately said, "All of you courtiers will be given a chance to prove your mettle. Tenaliraman will not intervene until all the courtiers prove their mettle."

Hearing this, the people present in the court became happy. They said, "Okay sir! You tell us what we have to do?" King Krishna Deva Raya pointed to the incense stick and said that bring two hands of smoke for me. Whoever is able to do this work, he will be considered wiser than Tenaliram." Hearing the Maharaja, all the courtiers got into thinking and started discussing among themselves how it is possible? Can the smoke be measured? To prove their cleverness, all the courtiers tried their hand, but no one could measure the smoke. As soon as someone tried to measure the smoke, the smoke would fly out of their hands.

When all the courtiers gave up, then one of the courtiers said, "Your Majesty! Smoke cannot be measured according to us. Yes, if Tenaliram could do that, we would consider him more intelligent than ourselves, but If he can't do that, you have to treat him like us."

The king smiled and said, "Why Tenaliram! Are you ready?" To this Tenaliram bowed his head and said, "Maharaj! I have always obeyed your order. I will definitely do this this time too. After this Tenaliram called a servant and said something in his ear. Hearing his words, the servant immediately left the court." There was silence all around in the court. Everyone was rushing to see how Tenaliram was giving two hands of smoke to the king. Then everyone's eyes fell on the servant, who was carrying a two-handed glass tube made of glass. I came back.

Tenaliram put the mouth of that glass tube on the smoke coming out of the incense stick. Within no time the entire glass tube was filled with smoke and Tenali quickly closed the tube with a cloth over its mouth and turned it towards Maharaj and said, "Your Majesty! Take this two hands of smoke." Seeing this, Maharaj had a smile on his face and he took the hose from Tenaliram and looked at the courtiers.

Everyone's heads were bowed in shame seeing Tenaliram's cleverness. There some courtiers were also in favor of Tenaliram. They all had respect for Tenaliram. Seeing Tenaliram's intelligence and shrewdness, the king said, "Now you must have understood that it is not possible to match Tenaliram." In response, the courtiers could not say anything and they silently bowed their heads.
