मनहूस कौन

राजा कृष्णदेव राय के राज्य में चेलाराम नाम का एक व्यक्ति रहता था। वह राज्य में इस बात से प्रसिद्ध था कि अगर कोई सुबह-सवेरे उसका चेहरा सबसे पहले देख लेता था तो उसे दिनभर खाने को कुछ नहीं मिलता था। लोग उसे मनहूस कहकर पुकारते थे। बेचारा चेलाराम इस बात से दुखी तो होता था, लेकिन फिर भी अपने काम में लगा रहता था।

एक दिन यह बात राजा के कानों तक में पड़ी। राजा इस बात को सुनकर बहुत उत्सुक हुए। वह जानना चाहते थे कि क्या चेलाराम सच में इतना मनहूस है? अपनी इस उत्सुकता को दूर करने के लिए उन्होंने चेलाराम को महल में हाजिर होने का बुलावा भेजा।

दूसरी ओर चेलारम इस बात से अंजान खुशी-खुशी महल के लिए चल पड़ा। महल पहुंचने पर जब राजा ने उसे देखा तो वे सोचने लगे कि यह चेलारम तो दूसरों की भांति सामान्य प्रतीत होता है। यह कैसे दूसरे लोगों के लिए मनहूसियत का कारण हो सकता है? इस बात को परखने के लिए उन्होंने आदेश दिया कि चेलाराम को उनके शयनकक्ष के सामने वाले कमरे में ठहराया जाए।

आदेशानुसार चेलाराम को राजा के कमरे के सामने वाले कमरे में ठहराया गया। महल के नरम बिस्तर, स्वादिष्ट खानपान व राजसी ठाठ-बाठ को देखकर चेलाराम बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने भरपेट खाना खाया और रात को जल्दी ही सो गया।

अगली सुबह जल्द ही उसकी आंख खुल गई, लेकिन वह बिस्तर पर ही लेटा रहा। इतने में राजा कृष्णदेव राय उसे देखने के लिए कमरे में आए। उन्होंने चेलाराम को देखा और फिर अपने हर रोज के जरूरी काम के लिए चले गए।

उस दिन संयोगवश ही राजा को सभा के लिए जल्दी जाना पड़ा, इसलिए उन्होंने सुबह का नाश्ता नहीं किया। सभा की बैठक दिन भर इतनी लंबी चली कि सुबह से शाम हो गई, लेकिन राजा को भोजन करने का समय न मिला। थके-हारे, भूखे राजा शाम को भोजन के लिए बैठे ही थे कि परोसे हुए खाने में मक्खी पड़ी देखकर उन्हें बहुत गुस्सा आया जिससे उन्होंने भोजन न करने का निर्णय किया।

भूख व थकान से राजा का बुरा हाल तो था ही, ऐसे में गुस्से में आकर उन्होंने इस बात का दोषी चेलाराम को ठहराया। उन्होंने स्वीकार कर लिया कि वह एक मनहूस व्यक्ति है तथा जो कोई भी सुबह-सुबह उसका चेहरा देख ले तो उसे दिन भर अन्न का एक निवाला भी नसीब नहीं होता। उन्होंने गुस्से में आकर चेलाराम को मृत्युदंड की सजा सुनाई और कहा कि ऐसे व्यक्ति को राज्य में जीने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है।

जब यह बात चेलाराम को पता चली तो वह भागा-भागा तेनालीराम के पास पहुंचा। उसे मालूम था कि इस सजा से उसे केवल तेनालीराम ही बचा सकते हैं। उसने उन्हें अपनी पूरी व्यथा सुनाई। तेनालीराम ने उसे आश्वासन दिया और कहा कि वह न डरे और जैसा वो कहते हैं बिल्कुल वैसा करे।

अगले दिन फांसी के समय चेलाराम को लाया गया। उससे पूछा गया कि क्या उसकी कोई आखरी इच्छा है? जवाब में चेलाराम ने कहा - "हां, वह राजा समेत पूरी प्रजा के सामने कुछ कहने की अनुमति चाहता है।"

इतना सुनते ही सभा का एलान किया गया। जब चेलाराम सभा में पहुंचा तो राजा ने उससे पूछा, "बोलो चेलाराम, तुम क्या कहने की अनुमति चाहते हो?"

चेलाराम बोला- "महाराज, मैं केवल यह कहना चाहता हूं कि अगर मैं इतना मनहूस हूं कि जो कोई मुझे सुबह देख ले तो उसे दिन भर भोजन नसीब नहीं होता, तो आप भी मेरी तरह एक मनहूस हैं।"

यह सुन सभी उपस्थित लोग भौचक्के रह गए और राजा की ओर देखने लगे। राजा ने भी क्रोधित स्वर में कहा, "तुम्हारी ये मजाल, तुम ऐसी बात कैसे और किस आधार पर कह सकते हो?"

चेलाराम ने जवाब दिया, "महाराज, उस दिन सुबह सबसे पहले मैंने भी आप ही का चेहरा देखा था और मुझे मृत्युदंड की सजा सुनाई गई। इसका अर्थ तो ये हुआ कि आप भी मनहूस हैं, जो कोई सुबह सबसे पहले आपका चेहरा देख ले उसे मृत्युदंड मिलना तय है।"

चेलाराम की यह बात सुनकर महाराज का गुस्सा शांत हुआ और उन्हें यह एहसास हुआ कि चेलाराम निर्दोष है। उन्होंने शीघ्र ही उसे रिहा करने का आदेश दिया और उससे माफी मांगी। उन्होंने चेलाराम से पूछा कि उसे ऐसा कहने के लिए किसने कहा था?

चेलाराम ने जवाब दिया- "तेनालीराम के अलावा कोई और मुझे इस मृत्युदंड से नहीं बचा सकता था। इसलिए मैंने उनके समक्ष जाकर अपने प्राणों की गुहार लगाई थी।"

यह सुनकर महाराज अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने तेनालीराम की खूब प्रशंसा की। उनकी बुद्धिमानी को देख महाराज ने उन्हें रत्नजड़ित सोने का हार इनामस्वरूप दिया।

कहानी से सीख

इस कहानी से हमें शिक्षा मिलती है कि बिना सोचे-विचारे हमें किसी की भी बातों में नहीं आना चाहिए।

English Translate

Wretched Who

A man named Chellaram lived in the kingdom of King Krishnadeva Raya. He was famous in the state for the fact that if anyone saw his face early in the morning, he would not get anything to eat for the whole day. People used to call him wretched. Poor Chellaram used to be sad about this, but still he was busy in his work.

One day this word even fell in the ears of the king. The king was very curious to hear this. He wanted to know whether Chellaram was really that wretched? To overcome this curiosity, he sent an invitation to Chellaram to attend the palace.

On the other hand, Chellaram, unaware of this, happily left for the palace. On reaching the palace, when the king saw him, he began to think that this Chelaram appeared as normal as the others. How can this be a cause of wretchedness to other people? To test this, he ordered that Chellaram be accommodated in the room opposite his bedroom.

According to the order, Chellaram was placed in the room opposite the king's room. Chellaram was very happy to see the soft beds, delicious food and royal opulence of the palace. He ate a full meal and fell asleep early at night.

His eyes soon opened the next morning, but he remained on the bed. In the meantime, King Krishnadev Raya came to the room to see him. He saw Chellaram and then left for his daily essential work.

Coincidentally, the king had to leave early for the meeting that day, so he did not have breakfast. The meeting of the assembly lasted so long that it was morning to evening, but the king did not get time to eat. The tired, hungry king was sitting for dinner in the evening when he got very angry seeing a fly lying in the served food, so that he decided not to eat.

The king was in bad condition due to hunger and fatigue, so in anger, he blamed Chellaram for this. He accepted that he was a wretched person and whoever looked at his face early in the morning would not get even a morsel of food for the whole day. He got angry and sentenced Chellaram to death and said that such a person has no right to live in the state.

When Chellaram came to know about this, he ran to Tenaliram. He knew that only Tenaliram could save him from this punishment. He narrated his ordeal to them. Tenaliram assured him and said that he should not be afraid and do exactly as he says.

The next day, Chellaram was brought to the gallows. He was asked if he had any last wish. In response, Chellaram said - "Yes, he wants permission to say something in front of the whole people including the king."

On hearing this, the meeting was announced. When Chellaram reached the meeting, the king asked him, "Say Chellaram, what do you want permission to say?"

Chellaram said- "Sir, I just want to say that if I am so wretched that whoever sees me in the morning does not have food throughout the day, then you are also a wretched person like me."

Hearing this, all the people present were stunned and started looking at the king. The king also said in an angry voice, "You have this fun, how and on what basis can you say such a thing?"

Chellaram replied, "Sir, I saw your face first thing in the morning that day and I was sentenced to death. It means that you are also wretched, whoever sees your face first thing in the morning should be punished." Death penalty is certain."

Hearing this from Chellaram, Maharaj's anger subsided and he realized that Chellaram was innocent. He ordered his release soon and apologized to him. He asked Chellaram as to who had told him to say such a thing?

Chellaram replied- "No one other than Tenaliram could have saved me from this death sentence. That's why I went before him and pleaded for my life."

Hearing this, Maharaj was very pleased and he praised Tenaliram very much. Seeing his wisdom, the Maharaja rewarded him with a necklace of gem-studded gold.
