ब्राह्मण और कृतघ्न राजा

 पूर्व जन्म में काशीराज के घर एक दुष्ट स्वभाव का पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ। लोग उसे दुष्ट कुमार कहते थेे। वह किसी के साथ अच्छा व्यवहार नहीं करता था। लोगों को अपमानित करके भांति - भांति के कष्ट भी देता था। प्रजा जन तथा कर्मचारी सभी उससे असंतुष्ट थे।

एक दिन गंगा की धारा उमड़ रही थी। दुष्ट कुमार ने हट किया कि "इसी समय मुझे बीच धारा में ले चल कर नहलाओ।" सेवकों ने प्रयत्न करके उसे बीच धारा में पहुंचाया। उमड़ी हुई जलधारा को देखकर सेवकों ने सोचा इस दुष्ट से छुटकारा पाने का यह अच्छा अवसर है और उसे वहीं छोड़कर लौट गए। दुष्ट कुमार रोता चिल्लाता नदी की वेगवती धारा के साथ बह चला।

राजा के पूछने पर सेवकों ने सलाह करके उत्तर दिया कि कुमार घाट पर नहीं थे, वर्षा के कारण लौट आए होंगे। राजा ने कुमार की खोज करने के लिए बहुत से अनुचरों को नियुक्त किया। इधर दुष्ट कुमार को नदी में बहता हुआ एक बड़ा लक्कड़ दिख गया, वह प्रयत्न करके उस पर जा बैठा और धारा के साथ बहने लगा। 

थोड़ी दूर जाने पर नदी से अपनी रक्षा करने के लिए एक सर्प, एक चूहा और एक तोते ने भी उसी लक्कड़ पर आश्रय लिया। धारा में डूबने के भय से दुष्ट कुमार पहले ही घबराया हुआ था। अब विषधर सर्प को अपने बगल में देख वह और भी भयभीत हो गया और जोर जोर से चिल्लाने लगा। 

उस समय भगवान बोधिसत्व एक ब्राह्मण परिवार में जन्म ले गंगा तट पर कुटिया बनाकर रहते थे। मनुष्य का क्रंदन स्वर सुनकर संगम तट पर गए और लक्कड़ पर बैठे हुए उन चारों प्राणियों की दुर्दशा देखी। दया से उनका ह्रदय भर आया और उन्होंने धारा में घुसकर बड़े यत्न से उस लक्कड़ को किनारे पर लाकर उन चारों की जान बचा ली।

 स्वस्थ होने पर चारों प्राणी अपने अपने घर को चल दिए। चलते समय सर्प बोला - "हे उपकारी! मेरे पास 40 कोटी स्वर्ण मुद्राएं हैं। मैं बड़ी यत्न से आज तक उनकी रक्षा करता रहा हूं। यदि वह धन आपके काम आ सके तो, आप जब चाहे ले सकते हैं।"

चूहे ने कहा - "हे दयावान! मेरे पास भी 30 कोटी स्वर्ण मुद्राएं हैं। आप जब चाहे उन्हें ले सकते हैं।"

तोते ने कहा - "देव! मेरे पास स्वर्ण तो नहीं है, परंतु मैं आपको लाल धन दे सकता हूं।" 

बोधिसत्व ने सब का पता ठिकाना पूछ उन्हें विदा किया। दुष्ट कुमार को सर्प, तोते और चूहे के यह सब व्यवहार अच्छा ना लगा। उसने मन में कहा - "यह ब्राह्मण मुझे भी इन क्षुद्र जीवों के समान समझता है। इसने मेरा बड़ा अपमान किया है। मैं इसे इसका मजा चखाऊंगा।" प्रत्यक्ष में उसने ब्राह्मण से केवल इतना ही कहा जब मैं राजा बनूं उस समय आप काशी अवश्य आइएगा। 

बहुत दिन बीत जाने पर बोधिसत्व को इन चारों मित्रों का फिर ध्यान आया। उनकी परीक्षा लेने के लिए वह पहले सर्प के निवास स्थान पर गए और पुकारे। सर्प ने बाहर आकर भगवान को प्रणाम किया और कहा मेरे समस्त धन आपके लिए अर्पित है। भगवान ने कहा - "अभी आवश्यकता नहीं है।" 

इसी प्रकार चूहे और तोते की भी परीक्षा लेकर उन्हें अपने वचन पर दृढ़ पाया। अंत में वह दुष्ट राजा की परीक्षा लेने काशी गए। राजा उस समय हाथी पर बैठकर नगर में ठाट बाट से घूम रहा था। उसने दूर से ही देख कर उस ब्राह्मण को पहचान लिया। वह उससे बात नहीं करना चाहता था, जिससे उसके उपकार की बात लोगों को ना मालूम हो सके। 

अपने सैनिकों को उसने ब्राह्मण को मारते हुए नगर से निकालने का आदेश दिया। जब ब्राह्मण पर मार पड़ रही थी, तब उनके मुख से यही गाथा निकल रही थी कि बहती हुई लकड़ी को धारा में से निकालना एक (कृतघ्न) मनुष्य को उबारने की अपेक्षा कहीं अच्छा है।

भीड़ में कुछ पंडित भी थे। उन्होंने उसका अर्थ समझने के लिए सैनिकों को रोककर बोधिसत्व से बातचीत की। जब लोगों को राजा की कृतघ्नता की बात पता चली तोो, सैनिकों समेत जनता ने विद्रोह कर दिया। जो पहले से ही उन राजा के अत्याचारों से परेशान थे। दुष्ट राजा मारा गया और बोधिसत्व को काशी के राज सिंहासन पर बिठाया गया। सर्प चूहे और तोते ने अपनी - अपनी भेंट यथा समय बोधिसत्व के चरणों में उपस्थित कर दी।

English Translate 

Brahmin and Ungrateful King

 In a previous birth, a son of an evil nature was born in the house of Kashiraj. People called him a wicked Kumar. He didn't treat anyone well. He used to humiliate people and cause various kinds of troubles. The people and the employees were all dissatisfied with him.

One day the Ganges was flowing. The evil Kumar moved away that "At this time take me to the middle of the stream and take a bath." The servants tried to bring him to the middle of the stream. Seeing the overflowing stream, the servants thought this was a good opportunity to get rid of this wicked man and left him there and returned. The wicked Kumar cried and ran away with the swift current of the river.

On being asked by the king, the servants advised and replied that Kumar was not at the ghat, he must have returned due to rain. The king appointed many acolytes to search for Kumar. Here the wicked Kumar saw a big lump flowing in the river, he tried and sat on it and started flowing with the stream.

After going a short distance, a snake, a mouse and a parrot also took shelter on the same wood to protect themselves from the river. The evil Kumar was already frightened by the fear of drowning in the stream. Now seeing the poisonous snake beside him, he became even more frightened and started shouting louder.

At that time Lord Bodhisattva was born in a Brahmin family and lived in a hut on the banks of the Ganges. Hearing the cries of human beings, he went to the shore of the confluence and, sitting on the wood, saw the plight of those four beings. His heart was filled with kindness and by entering the stream, he saved the lives of all four of them by bringing that wood to the shore with great effort.

 On recovery, the four beings left for their respective homes. While walking, the snake said - "O benefactor! I have 40 degrees of gold coins. I have been protecting them with great effort till today. If that money can be of use to you, you can take it whenever you want."

The mouse said - "O Merciful! I also have 30 coats of gold coins. You can take them whenever you want."

The parrot said - "Dev! I do not have gold, but I can give you red money."

The Bodhisattva asked everyone to know their whereabouts and sent them off. The evil Kumar did not like all this behavior of snakes, parrots and rats. He said in his mind - "This brahmin also considers me like these petty creatures. He has done me a great disgrace. I will make him taste it." In fact, he only told the brahmin that you must come to Kashi when I become the king.

After many days, the Bodhisattva again got the attention of these four friends. To test them, he first went to the serpent's abode and called. The snake came out and bowed to God and said that all my wealth is dedicated to you. God said - "It is not necessary now."

Similarly, after testing the mouse and the parrot, he found them firm on his word. Finally he went to Kashi to test the evil king. At that time, the king was roaming around the city on an elephant. Seeing from afar, he recognized that Brahmin. He did not want to talk to her, so that people could not know about his favor.

He ordered his soldiers to kill the Brahmin and drive him out of the city. When the Bodhisattva was being beaten up, the same story was coming out of his mouth that it is better to pull the flowing wood from the stream than to rescue an (ungrateful) man.

There were also some pundits in the crowd, they stopped the soldiers to understand its meaning and talked to the Bodhisattva. When the people came to know about the gratitude of the king, the people including the soldiers revolted, who were already troubled by the atrocities of the evil king. Killed and the Bodhisattva was placed on the throne of Kashi, the snake, the mouse and the parrot presented their own gift at the Bodhisattva.
