शिवि का नेत्र दान

प्राचीन काल में शिवि देश में शिवराज नामक राजा राज्य करता था। बोधिसत्व का जन्म इसी शिवि कुल में एक राजकुमार के रूप में हुआ। राजकुमार शिवि ने तक्षशिला में रहकर विद्याध्ययन किया और वेदों का संपूर्ण ज्ञान प्राप्त करके राजधानी को लौट आए। पिता ने उनको सब प्रकार से योग्य समझकर उन्हें एक प्रांत का शासक नियुक्त कर दिया।

कालांतर में पिता का देहांत हो जाने पर राजकुमार शिवि ने राज्यभार संभाला। तरुण राजा को दान देने में अत्यधिक आनंद आता था। उसने अपनी राजधानी में विशाल मंडलों का निर्माण कराया, जहां वह स्वयं उपस्थित होकर दान दिया करता था धीरे-धीरे उसकी कीर्ति सारे संसार में फैल गई।

एक दिन राजा अपने मन में सोच रहा था, "मैंने अभी तक ऐसे तमाम पदार्थों का ही दान किया है, जिनके देने में स्वयं मुझे कोई विशेष कष्ट नहीं हुआ। अब मुझे कोई असाधारण दान देना चाहिए- बाहर की वस्तु का नहीं, अपने शरीर का।"

उपरोक्त गाथा में राज्य का यही संकल्प व्यक्त हुआ है- "यदि कोई ऐसा दान है जो मैंने अभी तक नहीं दिया है, चाहे वह नेत्रों का ही दान क्यों ना हो, तो मैं दृढ़ता और निर्भयता- पूर्वक उसे भी तुरंत दे दूंगा।"

धीरे-धीरे लोगों को राजा की इच्छा का पता लगा, परंतु लोग उसे बहुत चाहते थे। अतः ऐसी किसी चीज को मांगने की किसी की इच्छा ही ना होती थी जिससे राजा को कष्ट उठाना पड़े।

इंद्र (सक्र) ने राजा की परीक्षा लेने की ठानी।वह अंधे ब्राह्मण का रूप धरकर राजा के पास आया और कहा, "हे राजा, मैं नेत्रहीन हूं परंतु तुम्हारे दोनों आंख हैं। यदि तुम मुझे एक दे दो तो हम दोनों एक-एक आंख से अपना काम का चला सकते हैं।

राजा जिस चीज की प्रतीक्षा कर रहा था, वही उसे मिल गई। उसने अपने राज राजवैद्य को बुलाकर कहा, "मेरी एक आंख निकाल कर इस ब्राह्मण के लगा दो।"

जब शिवि का नेत्र-दान संकल्प नगर के लोगों ने सुना तो सब दौड़े आए और राजा को नेत्रदान करने से रोकना चाहा, पर वह अपने वचन पर दृढ़ था। अंत में लोग शक्र को बुरा-भला बोलने लगे।

वैद्य ने एक नेत्र निकालकर ब्राह्मण की आंख में बिठा दिया। इसके पश्चात बोधिसत्व ने दूसरा नेत्र भी निकलवाकर उसकी दूसरी आंख में बिठवा दिया। शिवि का नेत्र दान महान त्याग था। इस महान त्याग से शक्र बहुत प्रभावित हुआ। उसने राजा से कहा, "हे राजा, याचना से अधिक दान देने और स्वयं अपने को बिल्कुल अंधा और दुखी बना लेने का क्या कारण है? यदि तुम यह भेद मुझे बता दो तो मैं तुम्हें तुम्हारी आंख लौटा सकता हूं। मैं स्वयं इंद्र हूं।"

राजा ने कहा, "नेत्र लौटाने के लिए सौदा कैसा। मेरे नेत्रदान का यदि कोई महत्व है तो आप उसे ही स्वीकार कीजिए और कुछ मत पूछिए।"

इंद्र इस शील से और भी प्रसन्न हुए और राजा को पुनः नेत्र प्राप्त हो गए।

कथा सुनकर भगवान बुद्ध ने कहा- "इस कथा में आनंद वैद्य था, अनिरुद्ध शक्ल था और राजा शिवि तो मैं स्वयं ही था"।

English Translate

Shivi ka netra daan

In ancient times, a king named Shivraj ruled in the country of Shiva. Bodhisattva was born in this Shiva clan as a prince. Prince Shiva studied in Taxila and after getting complete knowledge of the Vedas returned to the capital. Considering him worthy in all respects, his father appointed him the ruler of a province.

Later, after the death of his father, Prince Shiva took over the throne. The young king used to take great pleasure in giving charity. He built huge mandalas in his capital, where he himself used to present and donate, gradually his fame spread all over the world.

One day the king was thinking in his mind, "I have so far donated all such things, in giving of which I myself have not felt any special trouble. Now I should give some extraordinary donation - not from the outside thing, but to my body."

This is the resolve of the state expressed in the above saga - "If there is any gift which I have not given yet, even if it is a donation of eyes, then I will give it immediately with firmness and fearlessness."

Gradually people came to know about the king's wish, but people loved him very much. Therefore, there was no desire of anyone to ask for such a thing that the king would have to suffer.

Indra (Sakra) decided to test the king. He came to the king disguised as a blind brahmin and said, "O king, I am blind but you have both eyes. If you give me one, both of us will be one each." You can do your work with your one eyes.

The king got what he was waiting for. He called his royal physician and said, "Take out one of my eyes and put it on this Brahmin."

When the people of the city heard Shiva's decision to donate his eyes, everyone ran and tried to stop the king from donating his eyes, but he was firm on his word. In the end people started abusing Shakra.

The Vaidya took out one eye and placed it in the Brahmin's eye. After this, the Bodhisattva got the second eye removed and placed it in his other eye. Shiva's eye donation was a great sacrifice. Shakra was greatly affected by this great sacrifice. He said to the king, "O king, what is the reason for giving more charity than asking and making yourself completely blind and miserable? If you tell me this secret, I can return your eyes to you. I am Indra. "

The king said, "How is the deal to return the eyes. If there is any importance of my eye donation, then accept it only and do not ask anything."

Indra was more pleased with this modesty and the king got his eyes again.

Hearing the story, Lord Buddha said- "In this story Anand was Vaidya, Aniruddha was in the form and King Shiva was he himself."
