सुखबिहारी – जातक कथा / Sukhbihari - Jataka Katha

हिमालय की पर्वत कंदराओं में कभी एक प्रतिष्ठित सन्यासी रहते थे, जिनके हजारों अनुयाई थे। एक बार वर्षा काल में वे हिमालय की पहाड़ों से उतर वाराणसी पहुंचे। जहां उन्हें वाराणसी नरेश द्वारा राजकीय सम्मान एवं आतिथ्य प्राप्त हुआ। वर्षा काल जब समाप्त हुआ और वह वापस हिमालय पर लौटने की तैयारी करने लगे, तो राजा ने सन्यासी से कुछ वक्त और वहीं रुकने का आग्रह किया। अतः सन्यासी ने अपने शिष्यों को अपने प्रमुख शिष्य की देखरेख में वापस हिमालय पर भेज दिया।

कुछ महीनों के बाद वह प्रमुख शिष्य गुरु से मिलने और संघ की सूचना देने हेतु पुनः वापस वाराणसी आया और गुरु के ही पास बैठ गया। जहां उसकी आवभगत नाना प्रकार के भोजन और फलों से हुई।

थोड़ी ही देर के बाद राजा भी उस गुरु के पास पहुंचे। उस समय पकवान और फल आदि के बीच बैठा वह प्रमुख शिष्य अपने गुरु से कह रहा था," वाह!  क्या सुख है! क्या सुख है!"

तब राजा को यह आभास हुआ कि वह शिष्य लोभी है और गुरु द्वारा हिमालय पर भेजे जाने के बाद भी सांसारिक भोगों की कामना से पुनः वापस लौट कर आया है। 

राजा की अप्रसन्नता को देख गुरु ने राजा के मन के भाव को पढ़ लिया और राजा से कहा, "हे राजन! आप मेरे जिस शिष्य को लोभी समझ रहे हैं, वह वस्तुतः एक बहुत बड़े सम्राट रहे हैं। सांसारिकता का त्याग कर उन्होंने अपना सारा राजपाठ अपने बंधु बांधवों को सौंप दिया है। यह जिस सुख की चर्चा कर रहे थे, यह भोग्य सांसारिक पदार्थों की नहीं अपितु सन्यास के सुखों के संदर्भ में है। 

राजा ने तब अपनी गलती को समझा और गुरु से शीश झुका कर माफी मांगा।

Sukhbihari - Jataka Katha

There was once a distinguished monk who lived in the Himalayan mountain caves, which had thousands of followers. Once during the rainy season, he descended from the Himalayan mountains and reached Varanasi. Where he received the state honor and hospitality by the King of Varanasi. When the rainy season ended and he started preparing to return to the Himalayas, the king requested the monk for some more time to stay there. So the Sannyasi sent his disciples back to the Himalayas under the supervision of their chief disciple.

After a few months, he came back to Varanasi again to meet the principal disciple Guru and inform him of the Sangh and sat down with the Guru. Where he was welcomed with many kinds of food and fruits.

After a while the king also reached that guru. At that time, sitting between the dish and the fruit etc., the leading disciple was saying to his guru, "Wow! What a pleasure! What a pleasure!"

Then the king realizes that he is a greedy disciple and has returned again, despite the wish of worldly pleasures, even after being sent by the Guru to the Himalayas.

Seeing the king's unhappiness, the Guru read the king's heart and said to the king, "O Rajan, the disciple you are grasping, I have been a very great emperor. He renounced all his worldliness. The king has handed over to his brother-in-law Bandhavs. The pleasure he was referring to, it is not with reference to the pleasures of worldly things, but the pleasures of sannyas.

The king then realized his mistake and bowed his head to the Guru and apologized.
