आज अकबर बीरबल की एक और मजेदार कहानी आपके साथ शेयर करते हैं।

भारत के शहंशाह और अकबर अक्सर एक-दूसरे को उपहार भेजा करते थे। एक बार फारस के शहंशाह ने बादशाह अकबर को एक दुर्लभ किस्म का इत्र भेंट किया।

इत्र लगाने की चाहत में अकबर अपने कक्ष में गए और इत्र की शीशी खोलने लगे, लेकिन जैसे ही उन्होंने इत्र की शीशी खोली इत्र की एक बूंद जमीन पर गिर पड़ी। अकबर तुरंत घुटनों के बल बैठ गए और उंगली से समेटकर इत्र की उस बूंद को उठाने लगे। ठीक उसी वक्त किसी काम से बीरबल कक्ष में अंदर आ पहुंचे।

घुटनों के बल बैठे अकबर ने जब बीरबल को अपने सामने पाया, तो वह हड़बड़ा गए। उस हालत में अकबर को देखकर बीरबल मुंह से तो कुछ ना बोले, परंतु उनकी आंखों में हंसी साफ झलक रही थी। अकबर को बेहद शर्मिंदगी महसूस हुई। हिंदुस्तान का बादशाह इत्र की एक बूंद के लिए अपने घुटनों पर आ गिरे। यह शर्म वाली बात तो थी।

अकबर को लगा कि बीरबल अवश्य ऐसा ही कुछ सोच रहे होंगे। उस समय तो वह कुछ ना बोल सके, परंतु उनका मन उन्हें अंदर ही अंदर कचोट रहा था। वह किसी भी तरह बीरबल की अपने प्रति धारणा बदलना चाहते थे। इसलिए अगले ही दिन उन्होंने अपने शाही हमाम को इत्र से भरवा दिया और एलान करवा दिया कि कोई भी आकर वहां से इत्र ले जा सकता है। लोग वहां से बाल्टी भर- भर कर इत्र ले जाने लगे।

अकबर ने बीरबल को बुलावा भिजवाया और यह नजारा दिखाते हुए बोले, "बीरबल देखो प्रजा कैसे खुशी से बाल्टी भर भर के इत्र ले जा रही है। तुम इस बारे में क्या सोचते हो ? अकबर की मनसा बीरबल को यह दिखाने की थी कि हिंदुस्तान का बादशाह अकबर इत्र के मामले में कंजूस नहीं है। वह चाहे तो हमाम भर इत्र दान कर सकता है।

बीरबल मंद - मंद मुस्कुराते हुए बस इतना ही बोले, " बूंद से जाती, वह हौज से नहीं आती। अर्थात पूरा सागर भर देने के बाद भी वह कभी नहीं लौटता जो एक बूंद से चला गया हो।

बीरबल ने इस वाक्य के सहारे कह दिया कि अकबर की इत्र उठाने की स्वभाविक कंजूस प्रवृत्ति के कारण जो इज्जत चली गई वह तो पूरा का पूरा सागर भर देने के बाद भी वापस नहीं आएगी।
