डॉल्फिन की गिणती मछली में नही बल्कि स्तनधारी में होती है। आज हम आपको डॉल्फिन्स के बारे में मजेदार तथ्य बताने जा रहे है। डॉल्फ़िन एक चार-पैर वाले स्थलीय जानवर से विकसित हुई हैं, जिसने लगभग 50 मिलियन साल पहले पानी में अधिक समय बिताना शुरू कर दिया था.

आइए डॉलफिन के बारे में कुछ रोचक तथ्य जानते हैं-

•  डॉलफिन को हमेशा शार्क मछली से भय रहता है इसलिए वह एक आँख खोलकर सोती है।  जिससे वह शार्क से अपनी रक्षा कर सके।

• डॉलफिन का पूरा दिमाग कभी नहीं सोता। जब डॉलफिन एक बार सोती है तब उसका आधा दिमाग जग रहा होता है।  वह हमेशा के लिए अपने आधे दिमाग को जगाये रखती है।  क्योंकि उसे अपने शत्रु से काफी सचेत रहने की आवश्यकता होती है।

• ऐसा भी देखा गया है की डोल्फीन में एक सेवा भाव का भी गुण होता है।  जब भी कोई भी साथी डॉलफिन किसी कारण से घायल होती है तब वह उसकी पूरी देखभाल करती है। 

• डॉल्फिन अपनी त्वचा की ऊपरी परत्त को हर 2 घंटे में उतार देती है।

• अधिकारिक रिकॉर्ड अनुसार सबसे लंबे समय तक जीवित रहने वाली डॉल्फिन ‘नेली’ थी, जिसे फ्लोरिडा के मारिनलैंड के डॉल्फिन एडवेंचर में रखा गया था. वह 61  वर्ष तक जीवित रही थी। 

• मनुष्यों की तरह डॉलफिन भी एक दुसरे को पहचान के लिए नाम प्रद्दान करती है।  ऐसे ही वह एक दुसरे को पहचानती है। 

• ब्रिटेन की महारानी का ब्रिटेन के आधीन रहने वाली सभी डॉलफिन पर अधिकार है। 

• लाखो साल पहले डॉलफिन चार पैरो वाले जलचर की तरह थी लेकिन अधिक समय पानी में बिताने के कारण आज वह इस हालात में देखने को मिलती है। 

•  किलर व्हेल डॉलफिन प्रजाति की सबसे बड़ी मछली होती है। 

•  दुनिया में डॉल्फ़िन की लगभग 40 विभिन्न प्रजातियाँ हैं, जिनमें से सागरीय डॉल्फ़िन (oceanic dolphin) की सबसे ज्यादा ३८, पर्पोइज़ डॉलफिन (porpoise dolphin) की ७ तथा नदी में रहने वाली डॉल्फिन (river dolphin) की ४ विभिन्न प्रजातियाँ हैं.

•  डॉलफिन के समूह को pod कहा जाता है।  उनके समूह में 12 के आसपास डॉलफिन होती है।

• सामान्य रूप से डॉलफिन कम पानी में ही रहती है लेकिन कभी कभी वह 1000 मीटर तक के गहरे पानी में भी गोता लगा सकती है। 

• समुद्र में डोल्फीन कभी पानी नहीं पीती लेकिन वह अपने खाए हुए खुराक से ही अपने पानी की आपूर्ति करती है। 

•  डॉलफिन के अन्दर दो पेट होते है।  जिसमे एक खुराक के संग्रह के लिए और दुसरे का पाचन करने के लिए। 

• डॉल्फिन 36km/hour की स्पीड से भी तैर सकती है जबकि इंसान अधिकत्तम 8.6km/h की स्पीड से ही तैर पाते है। 

• डाॉल्फिन, इंसानों से 10 गुना ज्यादा सुन सकती है, लेकिन इन्हें खूशबू और बदबू नही आती। 

• डॉलफिन का नाक हड्डी से बना होता है जो उसके लिए एक हथियार साबित होता है। शार्क से बचने के लिए वह नाक से प्रहार करती है। 

•  डॉल्फिन जब बच्चे को जन्म देती है तब पहले उसकी पूँछ निकलती है ना कि सिर।

• सभी पशु के सन्दर्भ में डॉलफिन की यादाश्त सबसे अच्छी होती है। 

• भारत ने 2009 में डॉल्फिन को ‘राष्ट्रीय जलीय जीव’ का दर्जा दिया है|

•  डॉलफिन की त्वचा पर एक चिकना पदार्थ होता है, जो उसे तैरने में आसानी प्रदान करता है। 

• डॉलफिन के मुह में 100 दांत होते है लेकिन वह अपने शिकार को चबाने के लिए नहीं होते। वह अपने खुराक को साबुत निगल के खाना खाती है। 

•  डॉलफिन सभी जीवो में अत्यधिक बुद्धिशाली जिव है। वह इंसानों की तरह खेलना कूदना भी सिख सकती है। 

• भारत में डॉल्फ़िन नदी में भी पाई जाती हैं. जिसे ‘गंगा का बाघ’ नाम से भी पहचाना जाता है| अब वह विलुप्ति के कगार पर हैं|
