त्रंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर(Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Temple) महाराष्ट्र में नासिक शहर से 35 किलोमीटर दूर गौतमी नदी के तट पर स्थित है, जो गांव और ब्रम्हगिरी नामक पहाड़ी की तलहटी में स्थित है। इस गिरी को शिव का साक्षात रूप माना जाता है। इसी पर्वत पर पवित्र गोदावरी नदी का उद्गम स्थल है। त्रंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग में ब्रह्मा विष्णु और महेश तीनों ही विराजित हैं, यही इस ज्योतिर्लिंग की सबसे बड़ी विशेषता है। अन्य सभी ज्योतिर्लिंग में सिर्फ भगवान शिव ही विराजित हैं।

त्रंबकेश्वर मंदिर(Trimbakeshwar Temple) की भव्य इमारत सिंधु-आर्य शैली का उत्कृष्ट नमूना है। मंदिर के अंदर गर्भगृह में प्रवेश करने के बाद शिव की केवल अर्घा दिखाई देती है लिंग नहीं। गौर से देखने पर अर्घा  के अंदर 1-1 इंच के तीन लिंग दिखाई देते हैं। इन लिंगो को त्रिदेव ब्रह्मा , विष्णु और महेश का अवतार माना जाता है। भोर के समय होने वाली पूजा के बाद इस अर्घा पर चांदी का पंचमुखी मुकुट चढ़ा दिया जाता है।

इस ज्योतिर्लिंग की स्थापना के विषय में शिव पुराण में यह कथा वर्णित है-

एक बार महर्षि गौतम के तपोवन मेंरहने वाली ब्राह्मणों की पत्नियां किसी बात पर उनकी पत्नी अहिल्या से नाराज हो गईं। उन्होंने अपने पतियों को ऋषि गौतम का अपमान करने के लिए प्रेरित किया। उन ब्राह्मणों ने इसके निमित श्री गणेश भगवान की आराधना की।

उन ब्राह्मणों की आराधना से प्रसन्न हो श्री गणेशजी प्रकट होकर उनसे कुछ वर मांगने को कहा, ब्राह्मणों ने कहा-'प्रभु यदि आप हमसे प्रसन्न हैं तो गौतम ऋषि को किसी प्रकार इस आश्रम से बाहर निकाल दें'। उनकी यह बात सुनकर गणेश जी ने उनसे ऐसा वर मांगने के लिए समझाया किंतु वे अपने आग्रह पर अटल रहे हैं। अंततः में गणेश जी को विवश होकर उनकी बात माननी पड़ी। अपने भक्तों का मन रखने के लिए वे एक दुर्बल गाय का रूप धारण कर गौतम ऋषि के खेत में जाकर रहने लगे। गाय को फसल चरते देखकर ऋषि एक तृण लेकर बड़ी नरमी से उसे हांकने के लिए लपके। उन तृणों का स्पर्श होते ही गाय वहीं गिर कर मर गई। अब तो बड़ा हाहाकार मचा।

सारे ब्राह्मण एकत्र होकर ऋषि गौतम की भर्त्सना कर,आश्रम छोड़कर अन्यत्र कहीं जाने को कहने लगे। ऋषि गौतम इस घटना से बहुत आश्चर्यचकित और दुखी थे। विवश होकर वे अपनी पत्नी अहिल्या के साथ वहां से 1 कोस दूर जाकर रहने लगे , लेकिन इन ब्राह्मणों ने वहां भी उनका रहना दुभर कर दिया। कहने लगे -"गौ हत्या के कारण तुम्हें अब वेद पाठ और यज्ञादि करने का कोई अधिकार नहीं रह गया"। अत्यंत अनुनय के साथ ऋषि गौतम ने उन ब्राह्मणों से प्रार्थना की कि आप लोग मेरे प्रायश्चित और उद्धार का कोई उपाय बताएं।

 उन्होंने कहा- "गौतम,तुम अपने पाप को सर्वत्र सब को बताते हुए 3 बार पूरी पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करो और तत्पश्चात यहां आकर 1 महीने का व्रत रखो। तत्पश्चात ब्रम्हगिरी की 101 परिक्रमा करने के बाद तुम्हारी शुद्धि होगी अथवा यहां गंगा जी को लाकर उनके जल से स्नान करके एक करोड़ पार्थिव शिवलिंगों से शिवजी की आराधना करो, इसके बाद पुनः गंगा जी में स्नान करके इस ब्रम्हगिरी की एक 11 बार परिक्रमा करो फिर 100 घड़ों के पवित्र जल से पार्थिव शिवलिंग को स्नान कराने से तुम्हारा उद्धार होगा।

ब्राह्मणों के कथनानुसार महर्षि गौतम वे सारे कार्य पूरे कर के पत्नी अहिल्या के साथ पूर्णता तल्लीन होकर भगवान शिव की आराधना करने लगे। इससे प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने प्रकट होकर उनसे वर मांगने को कहा-ऋषि गौतम ने कहा कि मैं यह चाहता हूं कि मुझे गौ हत्या के पाप से मुक्त कर दें।भगवान शिव ने कहा-" गौतम ! तुम सर्वथा निष्पाप हो , गौ हत्या का पाप तुमपर छल द्वारा लगाया गया है,छलपूर्वक ऐसा करवाने वाले तुम्हारे आश्रम के ब्राह्मणों को मैं दंड देना चाहता हूं"!

गौतम ऋषि ने कहा, प्रभु!उन्हीं के निमित्त से तो मुझे आपका दर्शन प्राप्त हुआ है, उन्हें मेरा परम हित समझकर आप उन पर क्रोध ना करें। बहुत से ऋषि यों, मुनियों और देवगणों ने वहां एकत्र हो गौतम ऋषि के बाद का अनुमोदन करते हुए भगवान शिव से वहां सदा निवास करने की प्रार्थना की। वह उनकी बात मान कर वहां त्र्यंबक ज्योतिर्लिंग के नाम से स्थित हो गए गौतम जी द्वारा लाई गई गंगा जी भी वहां पास में गोदावरी के नाम से प्रवाहित होने लगीं। यह ज्योतिर्लिंग समस्त पुण्यों को प्राप्त करने वाला है।

Trimbakeshwar Temple

The Trimbakeshwar Temple is located in the foothills of the village and hill called Bramhagiri. This kernel is considered to be the visible form of Shiva. It is on this mountain that the sacred Godavari River originates. Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are all three in Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, this is the biggest feature of this Jyotirlinga. In all other Jyotirlingas, only Lord Shiva is enthroned.

 The magnificent building of the Trimbakeshwar temple is an excellent specimen of the Indus-Aryan style. After entering the sanctum inside the temple, only the Argha of Shiva is visible, not the linga. A close look of three 1-1 inch linga is seen inside the Argha. These lingas are considered to be the incarnation of Trideva Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. After worshiping at the time of dawn, silver panchmukhi crown is offered on this Argha. This legend is described in the Shiva Purana about the establishment of this Jyotirlinga.

 Once the wives of Brahmins who lived in Maharishi Gautama's got angry with his wife Ahilya. He inspired his husbands to insult Sage Gautama. Those Brahmins worshiped Lord Shri Ganesh for this.

 Pleased with the worship of those Brahmins, Shri Ganeshji appeared and asked him to ask for some brides, the Brahmins said - 'Lord, if you are happy with us, then please get Gautam Rishi out of this ashram somehow'. On hearing this, Ganeshji explained to him to ask for such a boon, but he has remained firm on his request. Finally, Ganesh ji was forced to obey him. In order to keep the mind of his devotees, he took the form of a weak cow and started living in the field of Gautam Rishi. Seeing the cow grazing the crop, the sage took a trunk and rushed to humbly soften it. As soon as those trunks were touched, the cow fell there and died. Now there was a big cry.

 All the Brahmins gathered and condemned the sage Gautama and left the ashram and asked him to go elsewhere. Sage Gautama was very surprised and saddened by this incident. Being compelled, he started living with his wife Ahalya from there for a distance, but these Brahmins made their stay there also. He started saying - "Now you have no right to recite the Vedas and Yajnadi because of cow slaughter". With utmost persuasion, the sage Gautama prayed to those Brahmins to show me some measure of my atonement and salvation. He said, "Gautam, you revolve the whole earth 3 times, telling your sin to everyone everywhere and then fast for 1 month. After that you will get purified after doing 101 circumambulation of Bramhagiri or bring Ganga ji here and bathe with water and worship Shiva with one crore earthly Shivalingas. Revolve 11 times and then bathing the earthly Shivling with the holy water of 100 pitches will save you.

 According to the Brahmins' statement, Maharishi Gautama, after completing all those tasks, became fully engrossed with his wife Ahalya and started worshiping Lord Shiva. Pleased by this, Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to ask for the bride - Sage Gautama said that I want to free me from the sin of killing cow. Sin has been imposed on you by deceit, I want to punish the Brahmins of your ashram who have done it fraudulently "! Gautam Rishi said, Lord, I have received your darshan for his sake, considering him as my ultimate interest. But don't be angry Many sages, sages and deities gathered there, approving after the sage Gautama and prayed to Lord Shiva to stay there forever. He obeyed them, and located there in the name of Trimbak Jyotirlinga, Ganga ji brought by Gautam ji also started to flow near there as Godavari. This Jyotirlinga is the recipient of all virtues.
