दुनिया भर के समुद्रों का पानी खारा या नमकीन होता है। इनमें नदियों के पानी की तुलना में समुद्र के नमकीन पानी का घनत्व अर्थात डेंसिटी बढ़ जाती है। आम पानी की तुलना में इसके पानी में 20 गुना ज्यादा ब्रोमियम, 50 गुना ज्यादा मैग्नीशियम और 10 गुना ज्यादा आयोडीन होता है। इस वजह से ना तो यह पानी पीने लायक होता है और ना ही इस में मौजूद नमक का उपयोग किया जा सकता है।

ऐसा ही एक छोटा सा समुद्र "मृत सागर" है। इसराइल की एक समुद्र को "मृत सागर" के नाम से जाना जाता है। मृत सागर इसराइल और जॉर्डन के बीच स्थित है। यह समुद्र तल से 1375 फुट या 420 मीटर नीचे और समुद्री सतह से करीब 2400 फुट नीचे है। दुनिया का सबसे निचला बिंदु कहा जाने वाला सागर है। यह सागर 48 मील लंबा और 11 मील चौड़ा है। यह "अरबी झील" के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। इस सागर में जॉर्डन नदी और अन्य कई नदियां आकर गिरती हैं। इसमें जीवाणु की 11 जातियां पाई जाती हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त मृत सागर में प्रचुर मात्रा में खनिज पाए जाते हैं। 

इस सागर की खास बात यह है कि यहां कोई डूब नहीं सकता। यहां बिना किसी डर के आसानी से तैरा जा सकता है। यह हमेशा से ही विदेशी सैलानियों के आकर्षण का केंद्र रहा है। इसकी खूबी और उसके आसपास फैले सौंदर्य की वजह से इसे 2007 में विश्व के सात अजूबों में चुनी गई 28 जगहों की सूची में शामिल किया गया था। यहां का वातावरण बहुत खुश्क है। यहां पर तापमान पूरा साल गर्म रहता है। यहां का वाष्पीकरण तेज होने के कारण इसका पानी हर साल 1 मीटर से अधिक कम होता जाता है और झील की लवणता बढ़ती जाती है। 

हालांकि इस सागर में कोई जीव जीवित नहीं रह सकता, पर इसका पानी बहुत ही औषधीय गुणों से भरपूर है। इस पानी को पिया तो नहीं जा सकता पर लाइलाज रोगों के इलाज में इस्तेमाल किया जाता है। इसी कारण आज "मृत सागर" एशिया के मेडिकल टूरिज्म के रूप में आकर्षण का केंद्र बनता जा रहा है। यह खनिज पदार्थ वातावरण के साथ मिलकर स्वास्थ्य के लिए लाभदायक वातावरण बनाते हैं। इसके अतिरिक्त "मृत सागर" के अंदर की गीली मिट्टी को "क्लियोपैट्रा की खूबसूरती" का राज से भी जोड़ा जाता है। 

मृत सागर अपनी विलक्षणताों के लिए कम से कम चौथी सदी से जाना जाता है। जब विशेषताओं द्वारा  इसकी सत्तल  से शिलाजीत निकालकर  मिश्र वासियों को बेचा जाता था। यह चीजों को सड़ने से बचाने सुगंधित करने के अलावा अन्य दूसरे कार्यों में भी उपयोग आता है। इसके गर्म सल्फर और कीचड़ कई असाध्य रोगों के इलाज में, खास कर जोड़ों से संबंधित बिमारियों में अत्यंत कारगर हैं।
