कीवी फल की नहीं बल्कि आज हम कीवी पक्षी के बारे में चर्चा करेंगे, जो न्यूजीलैंड का राष्ट्रीय पक्षी भी है। कीवी 25 से 50 साल तक जीवित रह सकता है। चूजे पूरी तरह से पंख वाले होते हैं। वे लगभग पाँच दिन की उम्र में भोजन करने के लिए घोंसले से बाहर निकलते हैं और उन्हें कभी भी उनके माता-पिता द्वारा भोजन नहीं दिया जाता है। युवा धीरे-धीरे बढ़ते हैं, वयस्क आकार तक पहुँचने में तीन से पाँच साल लगते हैं।

1. यह एक सर्वाहारी पक्षी है, जो दाना, फल के साथ-साथ कीड़े-मकोड़े भी खाते है। 
2. कीवी एक निशाचर प्राणी है, जो ज्यादातर रात में सक्रिय होते हैं और दिन में अपने-अपने बिलों में सोते है। 
3. कीवी एक गुस्सैल पक्षी है और अपने निवास स्थान (बिल) को बचाने के लिए हर संभव कोशिश करता है। इसके लिए यह हमला भी कर सकता है।
4. कीवी पक्षी के पंख होते है परंतु ये उड़ नहीं सकते हैं। क्योंकि इनके पंख बहुत छोटे होते हैं, जो करीबन 3 सेमी अर्थात् 1 इंच के होते है। अपने छोटे पंखों और अविकसित वक्षस्थल के कारण, कीवी उड़ने में असमर्थ हैं और इसलिए जंगल के फर्श पर बिलों और मांदों में रहते हैं। 
5. कीवी पक्षी सिर्फ न्यूज़ीलैंड में ही पाया जाता है, क्योंकि इस पक्षी के रहने लायक अनुकूल जलवायु विश्व में कही और नहीं है। 
6. कीवी पक्षियों की पाँच प्रजातियाँ पाई गयीं हैं, जिनमें ग्रेट स्पॉटेड कीवी, लिटिल स्पॉटेड कीवी, ओकारिटो कीवी, रोवी और टोकोका शामिल हैं, जो न्यूजीलैंड के दो मुख्य द्वीपों उत्तरी द्वीप और दक्षिण द्वीप पर पाए जाते हैं। रोवी कीवी की सबसे दुर्लभ किस्म है, जिसकी आज न्यूज़ीलैंड में केवल 450 प्रजातियाँ ही बची हैं।
