16,579 वर्ग किलोमीटर के क्षेत्र में फैला नागालैंड पूर्वोत्तर भारत का एक छोटा पहाड़ी राज्य है, जो देश के पूरे भौगोलिक क्षेत्र का सिर्फ़ 0.50% है। नागालैंड राज्य वनस्पतियों और जीवों की एक विशाल विविधता का घर है। बुरांस या बुरुंश (रोडोडेंड्रॉन / Rhododendron) नागालैंड का राजकीय पुष्प है। यह सुन्दर फूलों वाला एक वृक्ष है, जो यह वसंत ऋतु की शुरुआत का संकेत देते हुए बहुतायत में खिलता है। सर्दियों के अंत से लेकर वसंत की शुरुआत तक खिलती है। 

बुरांश नागालैंड के साथ ही उत्तराखंड और हिमाचल का राजकीय पुष्प भी है। नेपाल में भी बुरांस के फूल को राष्ट्रीय फूल घोषित किया गया है। गर्मियों के दिनों में ऊंची पहाड़ियों पर खिलने वाले बुरांस के सूर्ख फूलों से पहाड़ियां भर जाती हैं। 

बुरांश हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में 1500 से 4000 मीटर की मध्यम ऊंचाई पर पाया जाने वाला सदाबहार वृक्ष है। यह 20 मीटर तक ऊंचा होता है, जिसमें खुरदरी और गुलाबी भूरी छाल होती है। पत्तियां शाखाओं के सिरे की ओर भरी हुई, तिरछी-लांसोलेट और सिरों पर संकुचित, 7.5 से 15 × 2.5 - 5 सेमी, ऊपर चमकदार, नीचे सफेद या जंग के सामान भूरे रंग के होते हैं। फूल कई हिस्सों में, बड़े, गोलाकार, गहरे लाल या गुलाबी रंग के होते हैं। बुरांस के पेड़ों पर मार्च-अप्रैल माह में लाल सूर्ख रंग के फूल खिलते हैं। इस वृक्ष की सुंदरता के कारण इसकी करीब 1,000 उद्यान नस्लें (horticultural forms) निकाली गई हैं। इसकी लकड़ी अधिकतर जलाने के काम आती है। कुछ अच्छी लकड़ियों से सुंदर अल्मारियाँ बनाई जाती हैं। फूल से एक प्रकार की जेली बनती है तथा पत्तियाँ औषधि में प्रयुक्त होती हैं।

बुरांस के फूलों का इस्तेमाल दवाइयों में किया जाता है, वहीं पर्वतीय क्षेत्रों में पेयजल स्रोतों को यथावत रखने में बुरांस महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाता है। बुरांस के फूलों से बना शरबत हृदय-रोगियों के लिए बेहद लाभकारी माना जाता है। बुरांस के फूलों की चटनी और शरबत बनाया जाता है, वहीं इसकी लकड़ी का उपयोग कृषि यंत्रों के हैंडल बनाने में किया जाता है।

बुरांश मूल रूप से भारतीय है, यह पूरे हिमालयी इलाकों में फैला हुआ है। यह भूटान, चीन, नेपाल और पाकिस्तान, थाईलैंड और श्रीलंका में भी पाया जाता है। उत्तराखंड में पारंपरिक उपयोग के तौर पर बुरांश के फूल की पंखुड़ियों का उपयोग खाने में किया जाता है। इसका स्वाद खट्टा-मीठा होता है। लगभग सभी धार्मिक कार्यों में देवताओं को बुरांश के फूल चढ़ाए जाते हैं।

Buransh is an evergreen tree found at medium altitudes of 1500 to 4000 meters in the Himalayan regions. It is up to 20 meters high, with rough and pinkish brown bark. Leaves are full towards the tip of the branches, oblong-lanceolate and narrowed at the tips, 7.5 to 15 × 2.5 - 5 cm, shiny above, white or rusty brown below. Flowers are in many parts, large, spherical, dark red or pink in color. Red flowers bloom on Buransh trees in the month of March-April. Due to the beauty of this tree, about 1,000 horticultural forms of it have been developed. Its wood is mostly used for burning. Beautiful cupboards are made from some good wood. A type of jelly is made from the flower and the leaves are used in medicine.

Burans is originally Indian, it is spread throughout the Himalayan regions. It is also found in Bhutan, China, Nepal and Pakistan, Thailand and Sri Lanka. In Uttarakhand, the petals of Burans flower are used in food as a traditional use. Its taste is sweet and sour. Burans flowers are offered to the gods in almost all religious functions.
