The most amazing feature of the plant is its flowers which are large, creamy-white and waxy. Their structure is quite complex and at a certain stage of opening, they start looking like a baby wrapped in swaddling cloth. Each flower blooms from a single stem from the base of the pseudobulb.

The plant grows to a height of only 18-24 inches. The conical shaped pseudobulbs can be seen just below the thin and pleated leaves of this orchid. However, the main attraction of this orchid, without a doubt, is its intricate flower that looks like a baby that has been swaddled in a cloth. This beautiful orchid was discovered by botanists Antonio Pavón Jiménez and Hipólito Ruiz López in a ten-year expedition to Chile and Peru from 1777 to 1788. It took ten years for scientists to name this orchid Angula uniflora in honor of botanist Don Francisco de Angulo, who was also the Director General of Mines of Peru.
