वैज्ञानिकों के मुताबिक इस परजीवी में माइट्रोकॉन्ड्रियल जीनोम नहीं होता है। ये वो भाग होता है जिसके जरिए जीव सांस लेते हैं। इस भाग की कमी के चलते ही यह परजीवी बिना सांस लिए भी जीवित रह सकता है। इस रहस्यमयी जीव की खोज इजरायल के अवीव यूनिवर्सिटी के शोधकर्ताओं की टीम ने की है। उनके मुताबिक यह जीव मछलियों से ऊर्जा प्राप्त करता है। ये परजीवी ज्यादातर साल्मन फिश में पाए जाते हैं। ये तब तक जिंदा रहते हैं, जब तक कि मछली सही सलामत रहती हैं।

शोधकर्ता डयाना याहलोमी के मुताबिक यह परजीवी इंसानों या दूसरे जीवों के लिए बिल्कुल भी नुकसानदायक नहीं हैं। हालांकि यह विकसित कैसे हुआ और बिना ऑक्सीजन के ये जिंदा कैसे रहता है ये जांच का विषय है। यह जीव इतने छोटे होते हैं कि इन्हें केवल फ्लोरेसेंस माइक्रोस्कोप से देखा जा सकता है। इस जीव की तरह वैज्ञानिकों ने साल 2010 में भी एक रहस्यमयी जीव की खोज की थी। जो बिना सांस लिए जिंदा रह सकता था। इसकी खोज इटली के वैज्ञानिकों ने की थी।
