हाथी का नाम सुनते ही एक विशालकाय छवि हमारे जेहन में उतर आती है। बचपन में जब कभी सड़क से कोई हाथी गुजरता था, तो उसको देखने के लिए लोगों की भीड़ उमड़ पड़ती थी। उस भीड़ में एक मैं भी हुआ करती थी। शायद आपलोगों में से भी कुछ लोग होंगे। खैर आज हाथी से सम्बंधित कुछ बातें शेयर कर रही हूँ, जो शायद आपलोगों के लिए नई हो और कुछ लोग इससे वाकिफ भी होंगे।

हाथी जमीन पर रहने वाला सबसे विशाल और ताकतवर स्तनपायी जानवर है। वैसे तो हाथी एक जंगली जानवर है लेकिन मनुष्य के द्वारा हाथी को उचित ट्रेनिंग देकर सदियों से पालतू बनाया जाता रहा है। यह एलीफेंन्टिडी कुल और प्रोबोसीडिया गण का प्राणी है। आज एलीफेंन्टिडी कुल में केवल 2 प्रजातियां जीवित हैं एंलिफस तथा लाक्सोडांण्टा। तीसरी प्रजाति मैमथ विलुप्त हो चुकी है।तो, आज हाथी के बारे में कुछ रोचक तथ्य जानने की कोशिश करते हैं-

एशियाई सभ्यताओं में हाथी बुद्धिमता का प्रतीक माना जाता है और अपनी स्मरण शक्ति तथा बुद्धिमानी के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, जहां उनकी बुद्धिमानी डॉल्फिन तथा वनमानुष के बराबर मानी जाती है।
पर्यवेक्षण से पता चला है कि हाथी का कोई प्राकृतिक परभक्षी नहीं होता है, हालांकि सिंह का समूह शावक या कमजोर जीव का शिकार करते देखा गया है।
हाथी की सूंड की मांसपेशियां बहुत ही मजबूत होती है इसकी सूंड बहुत ही उपयोगी है, जो नहाने और खाना तोड़कर खाने में काम आती है। हाथी के सूंड का वजन 130 किलोग्राम के आस पास होता है।
हाथी सूंड मिलाकर एक-दूसरे का अभिवादन करते है।
एक तरफ तो हाथी की सूंड इतनी संवेदनशील होती है कि घास का एक तिनका भी उठा लेती है तो दूसरी तरफ इतनी मजबूत भी होती है कि पेड़ की टहनियां भी उखाड़ ले।
हाथी अपनी सूंड में एक बार में करीब 14 लीटर पानी खींच लेता है और फिर उसे अपने मुँह में उड़ेल देता है। नहाने के लिए भी हाथी इसी विधि का इस्तेमाल करता है।
हाथी के शरीर का सबसे मुलायम हिस्सा उसके कान के पीछे होता है, इसलिए उसे कान से ही काबू में किया जाता है।
हाथी की उम्र लगभग 100 साल से भी अधिक होती है। हाथी अपने भारी शरीर का वजन पैरों से उठाता है जो खंभे के आकार के होते हैं तथा बहुत मजबूत होते हैं। हाथी आठ फीट से भी ज्यादा ऊंचे होते हैं।

अफ्रीका के हाथी का वजन 6000 किलो तक होता है, जबकि भारतीय हाथियों का वजन 5000 किलो तक होता है।
हाथी के दांत से आभूषण और सजावट के सामान बड़ी आसानी से बन जाते हैं, जिस कारण हाथियों का शिकार भी बहुत होता है।
हाथी दिन भर खाते ही रहते हैं और यह एक दिन में करीब 120 किलो तक भोजन चट कर जाते हैं। शायद इसलिए कहावत है कि हाथी लेना आसान है, पर उसको रखना कठिन।

प्राचीन समय में भारत के राजा-महाराजा हाथियों पर बैठकर युद्ध किया करते थे। हाथी उनका मुख्य पशु हुआ करता था। वे हाथियों को युद्ध के लिए विशेष तौर पर प्रशिक्षित करवाते थे क्योंकि इनकी त्वचा बहुत ही मोटी होती है और इन पर साधारण हथियारों का आसानी से असर भी नहीं होता था, जिसके कारण यह युद्ध में अजेय होते थे।
