दूध न पीने वाली बिल्ली

एक बार महाराज कृष्णदेव राय ने सुना कि उनके नगर में चूहों ने आतंक फैला रखा है। चूहों से छुटकारा पाने के लिए महाराज ने एक हजार बिल्लियां पालने का निर्णय लिया। महाराज का आदेश होते ही एक हजार बिल्लियां मंगवाई गयी। उन बिल्लियों को नगर के लोगों में बांटा जाना था। जिसे बिल्ली दी गयी उसे साथ में एक गाय भी दी गयी ताकि उसका दूध पिलाकर बिल्ली को पाला जा सके।

चूहों से सभी लोग परेशान थे, अतः जब बिल्लियाँ बंट रही थी तो लोगों की लंबी-लंबी कतारें लग गयी थीं। इस अवसर पर तेनालीरामन भी एक कतार में खड़ा हो गए। जब उनकी बारी आयी, तो उसे भी एक बिल्ली और साथ में एक गाय दे दी गई। बिल्ली को घर ले जाकर उसने गरमागरम एक कटोरा दूध उसे पीने को दिया। बिल्ली भूखी थी। बेचारी ने जैसे ही कटोरे में मुंह मारा तो गर्म दूध से उसका मुहँ बुरी तरह जल गया। इसके बाद बिल्ली के आगे जब दूध रखा जाता ,चाहे वह ठंडा ही क्यों न हो, बिल्ली वहां से भाग खड़ी होती। गाय का सारा दूध अब तेनालीराम व उसके परिवार के अन्य सदस्य ही पी जाते। बेचारी बिल्ली कुछ ही दिनों में इतनी कमजोर हो गयी कि उसमे चूहे पकड़ने की ताकत भी नहीं रही। 3 माह बाद महाराज ने बिल्लियों की जांच करवाई। गाय का दूध पी -पीकर सभी की बिल्लियां मोटी-तगड़ी हो गयी थी, परन्तु तेनालीराम की बिल्ली सूखकर कांटा हो चुकी थी। वह सब बिल्लियों के बीच में अलग पहचानी जा रही थी। महाराज ने जब तेनालीराम की बिल्ली की हालत देखी तब वे क्रोधित हो उठे। उन्होंने तुरंत ही तेनालीराम को हाजिर करने का आदेश दिया। तेनालीराम के आने पर वे गरजते हुए बोले - ”तेनालीराम!तुमने बिल्ली का यह क्या हाल बना दिया है? क्या तुम इसे दूध नहीं पिलाते ?”

तब तेनालीराम ने कहा -“महाराज ! मै तो रोज इसके सामने दूध भरा कटोरा रखता हूँ, अब यह दूध पीती ही नहीं है, इसमें मेरी कोई गलती नहीं है ?” महाराज को यह सुनकर बड़ा आश्चर्य हुआ। वह अविश्वास भरे स्वर में बोले- "तेनालीराम! क्यों झूठ बोल रहे हो ? बिल्ली दूध नहीं पीती ? मै तुम्हारी झूठी बातों में आने वाला नहीं।"

तेनालीराम- "महाराज! यही सच है। यह बिल्ली दूध नहीं पीती।" महाराज झल्लाकर बोले, "ठीक है, यदि तुम्हारी बात सच निकली तो तुम्हे सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएँ दी जाएँगी। अन्यथा सौ कोड़ों की सजा मिलेगी।" तेनालीराम- महाराज! मुझे मंजूर है, तेनालीराम शांत भाव से बोले। तुरंत ही महाराज ने एक सेवक से दूध का भरा कटोरा लाने का आदेश दिया। सेवक जल्द ही दूध से भरा कटोरा ले आया। अब महाराज ने तेनालीराम की बिल्ली को दूध पिलाने का आदेश दिया।

बिल्ली के सामने दूध का कटोरा रखा गया। बिल्ली ने जैसे ही कटोरे में रखा दूध देखा, वह म्याऊं-म्याऊं करती हुई वहां से भाग निकली। तेनालीराम - "महाराज! अब तो आपको विश्वास हो गया होगा कि मेरी बिल्ली दूध नहीं पीती। लाइए अब मुझे सौ स्वर्ण मुद्राएं दीजिये।" महाराज -"वह तो ठीक है, लेकिन मैं एक बार उस बिल्ली को ध्यान से देखना चाहता हूँ।"

यह कहकर महाराज ने एक कोने में छिप गयी बिल्ली को पकड़कर लाने का आदेश दिया। बिल्ली को अच्छी तरह देखने पर उन्होंने पाया की उसके मुँह में जले का एक बड़ा सा निशान है। वह उसी क्षण समझ गए कि बिल्ली का मुँह जल जाने के डर से वह दूध पीने से कतराती है। वे तेनालीराम की तरफ देखते हुए बोले। "अरे निर्दयी! तुमने इस बिल्ली को जानबूझकर गर्म दूध पिलाया ताकि यह दूध न पी सके। ऐसा करते हुए हुए तुम्हें शर्म नहीं आयी।"

तेनालीराम ने उत्तर दिया - महाराज! यह देखना तो राजा का कर्तव्य है कि उसके राज्य में बिल्लियों से पहले मनुष्य के बच्चों को दूध मिलना चाहिए।" इस बात पर महाराज ने कहा- बात तो तुम्हारी सही है, परन्तु मैं आशा करता हूँ कि भविष्य में तुम बेजुबान पशुओं के साथ दुष्टता नहीं करोगे।" उन्होंने तेनालीराम को तुरंत ही एक हजार स्वर्ण मुद्राएं भेंट की।

As soon as the poor man hit his mouth in the bowl, his mouth was badly burnt by the hot milk. After this, when milk was placed in front of the cat, even if it was cold, the cat would run away from there. Now only Tenaliram and other members of his family would drink all the cow's milk. The poor cat became so weak in a few days that it did not even have the strength to catch a mouse. After 3 months, Maharaj got the cats examined. Everyone's cats had become fat after drinking cow's milk, but Tenaliram's cat had become dry and thorny. She was being distinguished among all the cats. When Maharaj saw the condition of Tenaliram's cat, he got angry. He immediately ordered the presence of Tenaliram. When Tenaliram came, he roared and said - "Tenaliram! What condition have you made of the cat? Don't you milk it?"

Then Tenaliram said - "Maharaj! I keep a bowl full of milk in front of it every day, now it does not drink milk, it is not my fault? Maharaj was surprised to hear this. He said in disbelief - "Tenaliram! Why are you lying? The cat does not drink milk? I am not going to fall for your lies."

Tenaliram- "Your Majesty! That's true. This cat doesn't drink milk." The Maharaj said with annoyance, "Okay, if your words turn out to be true, then you will be given a hundred gold coins. Otherwise you will be punished with a hundred whips." Tenaliram- Maharaj! I agree, Tenaliram said calmly. Immediately the Maharaj ordered a servant to bring a bowl full of milk. The servant soon brought a bowl full of milk. Now the Maharaja ordered Tenaliram's cat to be fed milk.

A bowl of milk was placed in front of the cat. As soon as the cat saw the milk kept in the bowl, she meowed and ran away from there. Tenaliram - "Your Majesty! Now you must have believed that my cat does not drink milk. Bring me a hundred gold coins now." Maharaj - "That's fine, but I want to see that cat carefully once."

Saying this, Maharaj ordered to bring the cat hiding in a corner. After looking closely at the cat, he found that he had a big burn mark in his mouth. He understood at that very moment that she hesitated to drink milk for fear of burning the cat's mouth. He said looking at Tenaliram. "Oh ruthless! You deliberately made this cat drink hot milk so that it can't drink milk. You are not ashamed of doing so."

Tenaliram replied - Maharaj! It is the duty of the king to see that the children of human beings should get milk before cats in his kingdom." On this the Maharaj said - You are right, but I hope that in future you will do wickedness with the wild animals. Won't you." He immediately presented a thousand gold coins to Tenaliram.
