बिहार राज्य के सिवान जिला से लगभग 35 किलोमीटर दूर सिसवन प्रखंड के अति प्रसिद्ध मेंहदार गांव में भगवान शिव का प्राचीन महेंद्र नाथ मंदिर है। इस मंदिर का निर्माण नेपाल नरेश महेंद्र बीर बिक्रम शाह देव ने 17 वीं शताब्दी में करवाया था और इसका नाम महेंद्र नाथ रखा था। ऐसी मान्यता है कि मेंहदार केशिवलिंग पर जलाभिषेक करने पर निःसंतानों को संतान व चर्म रोगियों को चर्म रोग से निजात मिलता है।

महेंद्र नाथ मंदिर की स्थापना एवं कथा

ऐसी मान्यता है कि महेंद्र नाथ मंदिर के इस प्राचीन शिवालय स्थित शिवलिंग पर जलाभिषेक करने से सारी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं।  नि:संतानों को संतान तथा चर्म रोगियों को उनकी बीमारी से निजात मिल जाता है। कहा जाता है कि लगभग 500 वर्ष पूर्व नेपाल नरेश महेंद्र वीर विक्रम सहदेव को कुष्ठ रोग हो गया था। वह अपने कुष्ठ रोग का इलाज कराने वाराणसी जा रहे थे, और अपनी वाराणसी यात्रा के दौरान घने जंगल में विश्राम करने हेतु एक पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे रुके और पानी की तलाश में इधर-उधर भटकने लगे। काफी तलाशने के बाद उन्हें एक छोटे गड्ढे में पानी मिला। राजा विवश हो उसी से हाथ मुंह धोने लगे, जैसे ही गड्ढे का पानी कुष्ठ रोग से ग्रस्त हाथ पर पड़ा, हाथ का घाव व कुष्ठ रोग गायब हो गया। उसके बाद राजा ने उसी पानी से स्नान कर लिया और उनका कुष्ठ रोग समाप्त हो गया। विश्राम करते हुए राजा वहीं सो गए और उन्हें स्वप्न में भगवान शिव आए और वहां (पीपल के वृक्ष के नीचे)होने के संकेत दिए। फिर राजा शिवलिंग को ढूंढने के लिए उस स्थान पर मिट्टी खुदवाया और उन्हें उस स्थान पर शिवलिंग मिला।

शिवलिंग को निकालकर राजा अपने राज्य में ले जाने की योजना बनाने लगे तो उसी रात भगवान शिव जी ने राजा को पुनः स्वप्न में आकर कहा कि तुम शिवलिंग की स्थापना इसी स्थान पर करो और मंदिर का निर्माण करवाओ। स्वप्न में आए शिव जी का मार्गदर्शन अनुसार राजा ने वहीं 552 बीघा में पोखरा खुदवाया और शिव मंदिर का निर्माण करवाया जो आगे चलकर मेंहदार शिव मंदिर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गया। बड़े पोखरा (तालाब) की खुदाई में राजा ने एक भी कुदाल का प्रयोग नहीं करवाए और उसकी खुदाई हल और बैल से करवाए। यह मंदिर बिहार का लोकप्रिय प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्थल है। मेंहदार में बाबा महेंद्र नाथ के दर्शन पूजन के लिए बिहार, मध्य प्रदेश, कोलकाता, झारखंड व उत्तर प्रदेश के अतिरिक्त नेपाल से भी लोग आते हैं।यहां से लोगों की अपार आस्था जुड़ी हुई है। महाशिवरात्रि व श्रावण मास में यहां बैद्यनाथधाम जैसा दृश्य रहता है।

महेंद्र नाथ मंदिर का मुख्य आकर्षण

मंदिर में छोटे बड़े आकार की सैकड़ों की संख्या में घंटियां बहुत नीचे से ऊपर तक टंगीं हैं। हर- हर महादेव के उद्घोष और घंटे- शंख की ध्वनि से मंदिर परिसर से लेकर सड़कों तक भगवान शिव की महिमा गूंजती रहती है। दशहरा के पर्व में 10 दिनों तक अखंड भजन, संकीर्तन का पाठ होता है। इसके अलावा सावन में महाशिवरात्रि पर लाखों भक्त जलाभिषेक करते हैं।भोलेनाथ के शृंगार को देखने के लिए मंदिर में श्रद्धालु और पर्यटक खासतौर पर आते हैं। यहां शिवलिंग का शहद, चंदन, बेलपत्र और फूल से विशेष श्रृंगार किया जाता है। पहले शहद से शिवलिंग की मालिश करने के बाद चंदन का लेप लगाया जाता है। उसी लेप का शिवलिंग पर हाथों से डिजाइन बनाया जाता है। राम और ऊं लिखा बेलपत्र धतूरा और फूलों से भगवान शिव का श्रृंगार होता है। पूरे वर्ष पर्यटक का आना जाना लगा रहता है।

भगवान गणेश की एक प्रतिमा भी परिसर में रखा गया है। उत्तर में मां पार्वती की एक छोटा सा मंदिर है। हनुमान जी की एक अलग मंदिर है, जबकि गर्भगृह के दक्षिण में भगवान राम सीता का मंदिर है। कालभैरव, बटुक भैरव और महादेव की मूर्तियां मंदिर परिसर के दक्षिण में है। मंदिर परिसर से 300 मीटर की दूरी पर भगवान विश्वकर्मा का एक मंदिर है। मंदिर के उत्तर में एक तालाब है जिसे 'कमलदाह' सरोवर के रूप में जाना जाता है, जो 551 बीघा क्षेत्र में फैला हुआ है। इस सरोवर से भक्तगण भगवान शिव को जलाभिषेक करने के लिए जल ले जाते हैं और सरोवर की परिक्रमा भी करते हैं। इस सरोवर में नवंबर में कमल खिलते हैं और बहुत सारे प्रवासी पक्षी यहां आते हैं जो मार्च तक रहते हैं। मंदिर परिसर में हवन, भजन, कीर्तन चारों तरफ हरा-भरा और शांत वातावरण परिसर के आसपास उछल कूद करते बंदरों का झुंड सरोवर किनारे देशी व प्रवासी पक्षियों का झुंड धार्मिक और मनोहर दृश्य एक अलग अनुभव देते हैं। महाशिवरात्रि पर यहां लाखों भक्त आते हैं, उत्सव पूरे दिन चलता रहता है और भगवान शिव मां पार्वती की एक विशेष विवाह समारोह आयोजित होता है। इस दौरान शिव बारात मुख्य आकर्षण होता है।

Baba Mahendra Nath Dham (Siwan)

There is an ancient Mahendra Nath temple of Lord Shiva in the very famous Mehdar village of Siwan block, about 35 km from Siwan district of Bihar state. This temple was built by Nepal King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in the 17th century and named it Mahendra Nath. It is believed that by performing Jalabhishek on Henna Keshivalinga, the children of their children and skin patients get rid of skin diseases.

Establishment and Story of Mahendra Nath Temple

It is believed that by performing Jalabhishek on the Shivling located in this ancient pagoda of Mahendra Nath temple, all the wishes are fulfilled. Childless children and skin patients get relief from their disease. It is said that about 500 years ago, Nepal King Mahendra Veer Vikram Sahdev had got leprosy. He was going to Varanasi for the treatment of his leprosy, and during his visit to Varanasi, he stopped under a peepal tree to rest in the dense forest and wandered around in search of water. After much searching they found water in a small pit. The king was compelled to wash his hands with him, as soon as the water of the pit fell on the hand suffering from leprosy, the hand wound and leprosy disappeared. After that the king took a bath with the same water and his leprosy was cured. While resting, the king slept there and in a dream Lord Shiva came and indicated to him to be there (under the Peepal tree). Then to find King Shivling, soil was dug at that place and he found Shivling at that place.

When the king started making plans to take out the Shivling and take it to his kingdom, then on the same night Lord Shiva came again to the king in a dream and said that you should establish Shivling at this place and get the temple constructed. According to the guidance of Shiva who came in the dream, the king excavated Pokhara in 552 bighas and got the Shiva temple constructed which later became famous as the Mehdar Shiva temple. In the excavation of the big pokhara (pond), the king did not use a single spade and got it dug with a plow and a bull. This temple is a popular famous tourist destination of Bihar. Apart from Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh, people also come from Nepal to worship Baba Mahendra Nath in Mehndar. People have immense faith from here. In the month of Mahashivratri and Shravan, there is a scene like Baidyanathdham.

Main attractions of Mahendra Nath Temple

Hundreds of bells of small and large sizes are hung in the temple from the very bottom to the top. The glories of Lord Shiva resonate from the temple premises to the streets with the sound of Har-Har Mahadev's annals and bell-conch. In the festival of Dussehra, there is a recitation of monolithic hymns, sankirtana for 10 days. Apart from this, lakhs of devotees perform Jalabhishek on Mahashivratri in Sawan. Devotees and tourists especially come to the temple to see the adornment of Bholenath. Here Shivalinga is specially decorated with honey, sandalwood, belpatra and flowers. After massaging the Shivling with honey, sandalwood paste is applied. The design of the same paste is made on the Shivling with hands. Lord Shiva is adorned with Ram and Om written Belpatra Datura and flowers. Tourists keep coming and going throughout the year.

An idol of Lord Ganesha is also placed in the premises. To the north is a small temple of Goddess Parvati. Hanuman ji has a separate temple, while to the south of the sanctum is the temple of Lord Rama and Sita. The idols of Kalabhairava, Batuk Bhairav ​​and Mahadev are in the south of the temple complex. There is a temple of Lord Vishwakarma at a distance of 300 meters from the temple complex. To the north of the temple there is a pond known as 'Kamaldah' lake, which is spread over an area of ​​551 bighas. From this lake, devotees carry water to perform Jalabhishek to Lord Shiva and also circumambulate the lake. Lotus blooms in this lake in November and many migratory birds come here which stay till March. Havan, Bhajan, Kirtan in the temple premises, green and calm environment around the complex, flock of monkeys jumping around the complex, the flock of native and migratory birds on the banks of the lake, religious and beautiful scenes give a different experience. Lakhs of devotees come here on Mahashivratri, the festivities go on for the whole day and a special marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva Maa Parvati is held. The Shiva procession is the main attraction during this time.
