राजा कृष्णदेव राय के जन्मदिन के अवसर राजमहल में बहुत बड़े भोज का आयोजन किया गया। पड़ोसी राज्य के कई मित्र राजा उस शुभ अवसर पर महाराज को बधाई देने पहुँचे और उन्हें एक से बढ़कर एक बेशकीमती उपहार दिए। सभी उपहारों में महाराज को सबसे ज्यादा प्रिय चार फूलदान थे। वे रत्न-जड़ित फूलदान कला का उत्कृष्ट नमूना थे। महाराज ने उन्हें अपने शयन कक्ष में रखवाया और एक सेवक को उनके उचित रख-रखाव की ज़िम्मेदारी सौंप दी। 

सेवक पूरी सावधानी से उन फूलदानों की साफ़-सफ़ाई किया करता था। उसे पता था कि महाराज को वे फूलदान कितने प्रिय थे। यदि उसकी असावधानी से उन्हें कुछ भी नुकसान हुआ, तो फिर उसकी खैर नहीं। किंतु एक दिन जो नहीं होना था, वह हो गया। सफ़ाई करते समय उन चार फूलदानों में से एक फूलदान सेवक के हाथ से फ़िसलकर नीचे गिरा और चकनाचूर हो गया। डर के मारे उसकी जान सूख गई। लेकिन यह बात न छिपनी तो थी नहीं। 

महाराज को जब फूलदान टूटने की ख़बर मिली, तो वे आग-बबूला हो गये। उन्होंने उस सेवक को फांसी पर लटका देने का आदेश दे दिया। वह सेवक बहुत रोया, बहुत मिन्नते की, लेकिन महाराज ने उसकी एक न सुनी। अगले दिन सेवक को फांसी पर लटकाया जाना था। 

तेनालीराम को जब ये बात पता चली, तो उन्होंने महाराज से मिलकर इस छोटे से अपराध के लिए सेवक को फांसी देने का विरोध किया। लेकिन महाराज इतने अधिक क्रोधित थे कि उन्होंने तेनालीराम की बात अनुसुनी कर दी। 

महाराज को समझाने में विफ़ल होने के बाद तेनालीराम बंदीगृह में उस सेवक से मिलने पहुँचे। सेवक तेनालीराम को देख अपने प्राणों की रक्षा के लिए मिन्नतें करने लगा। तेनालीराम उसे दिलासा देते हुए बोले, "विश्वास करो, तुम्हें कुछ नहीं होगा। बस फांसी के पूर्व जैसा मैं कहूं वैसा ही करना."

तेनालीराम सेवक के कान में कुछ कहकर वहाँ से चले गए। अगले दिन सेवक को फांसी से पूर्व महाराज के सामने ले जाया गया। महाराज ने उससे उसकी अंतिम इच्छा पूछी। तब सेवक ने बोला -"महाराज! मेरी अंतिम इच्छा बचे हुए तीन फूलदानों को देखने की है।" उसकी अंतिम इच्छा पूरे करने वे तीनों फूलदान दरबार में मंगवाये गए। जैसे ही वे फूलदान उस सेवक के सामने ले जाए गए, उसने उन्हें उठाकर जमीन पर पटक दिया। तीनों फूलदानों के टुकड़े जमीन पर बिखर गए। 

अपने प्रिय फूलदानों का ये हश्र देख महाराज का क्रोध सांतवें आसमान पर पहुँच गया। वे चीख पड़े, "ये तुमने क्या कर दिया मूर्ख? इन फूलदानों को तुमने क्यों तोड़ा?" सेवक ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा - "महाराज! मेरे हाथों जब एक फूलदान टूटा, तो मुझे मृत्युदंड मिला। जब ये तीन फूलदान टूटेंगे, तब भी किसी न किसी को मृत्युदंड मिलेगा। मैंने इन्हें तोड़कर उन लोगों के प्राण बचा लिए हैं क्योंकि मनुष्य के प्राण से बढ़कर और कुछ भी नहीं।"

यह बात सुनकर महाराज में समझ आया कि अपने क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर वह क्या अनिष्ट करने वाले थे। उन्होंने सेवक को छोड़ देने का आदेश दिया और उससे पूछा, "किसके कहने पर तुमने से ऐसा किया?" सेवक ने तेनालीराम का नाम लिया। 

महाराज तेनालीराम से बोले - तेनालीराम! हम तुमसे बहुत प्रसन्न हैं। क्रोध के आवेश में लिया गया निर्णय कभी किसी के साथ न्याय नहीं कर सकता। आज तुमने हमारे हाथों अन्याय होने से बचा लिया। "

A huge banquet was organized in the palace on the occasion of the birthday of King Krishna Deva Raya. Many friends of the neighboring kingdom came to congratulate the king on that auspicious occasion and gave him more than one priceless gift. Of all the gifts, the most dear to the Maharaja were the four vases. They were a masterpiece of gem-studded vase art. The Maharaja got them kept in his bedroom and assigned the responsibility of their proper upkeep to a servant.

The servant used to clean those vases with utmost care. He knew how dear those vases were to the Maharaja. If his carelessness has caused any harm to them, then it is not good for him. But one day what was not supposed to happen, it happened. While cleaning, one of the four vases slipped out of the servant's hand and got shattered. His life dried up because of fear. But this was not to be hidden.

When Maharaj got the news of the breaking of the vase, he was furious. He ordered that the servant be hanged. The servant cried a lot, pleaded a lot, but the Maharaj did not listen to him. The next day the servant was to be hanged.

When Tenaliram came to know about this, he met Maharaj and opposed the execution of the servant for this small crime. But Maharaj was so angry that he ignored Tenaliram's words.

After failing to convince the Maharaja, Tenaliram went to the prison to meet the servant. Seeing Tenali Ram, the servant started pleading for the protection of his life. Tenaliram consoled him and said, "Believe it, nothing will happen to you. Just do as I tell you before hanging."

Tenaliram left from there saying something in the ear of the servant. The next day the servant was taken before the Maharaja before being hanged. Maharaj asked her his last wish. Then the servant said - "Sir! My last wish is to see the remaining three vases." To fulfill his last wish, those three vases were brought to the court. As soon as those vases were carried in front of the servant, he picked them up and threw them on the ground. The pieces of all three vases were scattered on the ground.

Seeing this fate of his beloved flowers, Maharaj's anger reached the seventh heaven. They cried out, "What have you done, fool? Why did you break these vases?" The servant said with folded hands - "Sir! When a vase was broken in my hands, then I got the death penalty. When these three vases are broken, still someone will get the death penalty. Nothing more than that."

Hearing this, Maharaj understood what he was going to do due to his anger. He ordered the servant to be released and asked him, "On whose behest did you do this to?" The servant took the name of Tenaliram.

Maharaj said to Tenaliram - Tenaliram! We are very pleased with you. A decision taken out of anger can never do justice to anyone. Today you saved us from injustice. ,
