 आज एक और रहस्यमय शिव मंदिर की चर्चा करते हैं, जो द्रविड़ वास्तुकला का एक हिंदू मंदिर है। यह दक्षिण भारत के तमिलनाडु राज्य में कुंभकोणम के पास दारासुरम में स्थित है। इस मंदिर का नाम है एरावतेश्वरा मंदिर (Airavatesvara Temple), जो भगवान शिव को समर्पित है। इस मंदिर में देवताओं के राजा इंद्र के सफेद हाथी एरावत द्वारा भगवान शिव की पूजा की गई थी, अतः शिव को यहां ऐरावतेश्वर के रूप में जाना जाता है।

मान्यता है कि मृत्यु के राजा यम ने भी यहां शिव की पूजा की थी। परंपरा के अनुसार यम, जो किसी ऋषि के शाप के कारण पूरे शरीर की जलन से पीड़ित थे, एरावतेश्वर भगवान द्वारा ठीक कर दिए गए। यम ने पवित्र तालाब में स्नान किया और अपनी जलन से छुटकारा पाया तब से उस तालाब को 'यमतीर्थम' के नाम से जाना जाता है।

एरावतेश्वरा मंदिर कला और स्थापत्य कला का भंडार है, जिसमें पत्थरों पर शानदार नक्काशी देखने को मिलती है। मंदिर की दीवारों छतों पर आकर्षक नक्काशी का खूबसूरत प्रयोग किया गया है। यह मंदिर बृहदेश्वर तथा गांगेयकोंडाचोलीश्वरम से छोटा है लेकिन इसकी संपूर्ण संरचना बहुत ही उत्तम तरीके से की गई है, जिसका कोई जवाब नहीं। इसका विमाना (स्तंभ) 24 मीटर (80 फीट) ऊंचा है। सामने के मंडप का दक्षिणी भाग पत्थर के बड़े पहियों वाले एक विशाल रथ के रूप में है, जिसे घोड़े द्वारा खींचा जा रहा है।इस मंदिर का निर्माण आस्था के साथ - साथ सतत मनोरंजन और नित्य विनोद को ध्यान में रखकर किया गया था।

मंदिर के अंदर प्रवेश करने पर खूबसूरत नक्काशीदार इमारतों का समूह है। यहां अलग-अलग जगहों पर शिलालेख भी नजर आते हैं, जो चोल राजाओं के विषय में जानकारी देते हैं। मंदिर के बरामदे पर 108 खंड के शिलालेख मौजूद हैं, जिनपर शिव संतो यानी शिवाचार्य के नाम अंकित हैं। भीतरी आंगन के पूर्व में बेहतरीन नक्काशीदार इमारतों का एक समूह है, जिसमें एक को बलीपीठ (बलि देने का स्थान) कहा जाता है। बलीपीथ की कुर्सी पर एक छोटा मंदिर बना है, जिसमें गणेश जी की छवि अंकित है। चौकी की दक्षिण तरफ शानदार नक्काशी युक्त तीन सीढ़ियों का एक समूह है, जहां चरणों पर प्रहार करने से विभिन्न संगीत ध्वनियां उत्पन्न होती हैं। यही 3 सीढ़ियां इस मंदिर को और ज्यादा खास बनाती हैं, जिस पर जरा सा भी तेज पैर रखने पर संगीत की अलग-अलग ध्वनि सुनाई देने लगती है, परंतु इस संगीत की ध्वनि के पीछे क्या रहस्य है, इस पर आज तक पर्दा पड़ा हुआ है। इस मंदिर को 2004 में महान चोल मंदिरों में शामिल किया गया था। ऐरावतेश्वर मंदिर का निर्माण चोल द्वितीय के शासनकाल के दौरान 12 वीं सदी में करवाया गया था।

12 वीं सदी में राजा चोल द्वितीय द्वारा निर्मित इस मंदिर को तंजावुर के वृद्धेश्वर मंदिर तथा गंगेयकोंडा चोलापुरम के गांगेयकोंडाचोलीश्वरम मंदिर के साथ यूनेस्को द्वारा विश्व धरोहर स्थल बनाया गया है। इन मंदिरों को महान जीवंत चोल मंदिरों के रूप में जाना जाता है।

The name of this temple is Airavatesvara Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was worshiped in this temple by Airavata, the white elephant of Indra, the king of gods, hence Shiva is known here as Airavatesvara.

It is believed that Yama, the king of death, also worshiped Shiva here. According to tradition Yama, who was suffering from burns of the whole body due to the curse of a sage, was cured by Lord Airavatesvara. Yama took a bath in the holy pond and got rid of his irritation, since then that pond is known as 'Yamatheertham'.

The Airavatesvara Temple is a storehouse of art and architecture, which has magnificent stone carvings. Beautiful use of attractive carvings has been done on the walls and ceilings of the temple. This temple is smaller than Brihadeeswarar and Gangeikondacholiswaram but its entire structure is very well done, which is unanswerable. Its vimana (pillar) is 24 meters (80 ft) high. The southern part of the front mandapa is in the form of a huge chariot with large stone wheels, which is being pulled by a horse. The temple was built with faith in mind as well as constant entertainment and continual humour.

Upon entering the temple, there is a cluster of beautifully carved buildings. Inscriptions are also seen here at different places, which give information about the Chola kings. The inscriptions of 108 volumes are present on the verandah of the temple, on which the names of Shiva saints i.e. Shivacharya are inscribed. To the east of the inner courtyard is a group of finely carved buildings, one of which is called the Balipeeth (place of sacrifice). A small temple is built on the chair of Balipeeth, in which the image of Ganesha is inscribed. On the south side of the chowki there is a group of three steps with magnificent carvings, where various musical sounds are produced by striking the steps. These 3 stairs make this temple more special, on which the different sound of music starts to be heard on keeping the slightest sharp foot, but what is the secret behind the sound of this music, it has been veiled till date. Is. This temple was included in the great Chola temples in 2004. The Airavatesvara temple was built during the reign of Chola II in the 12th century.
