विजयनगर राज्य का अपने पड़ोसी राज्य से मनमुटाव चल रहा था। तेनाली राम के विरोधियों को तेनाली राम के खिलाफ राजा कृष्णदेव राय को भड़काने का यह बड़ा ही सुन्दर अवसर जान पड़ा।

एक दिन राजा कृष्णदेव राय अपने बगीचे में अकेले बैठे पड़ोसी राज्य की समस्या के बारे में ही सोच रहे थे कि तभी एक दरबारी उनके पास पहुंचा और बड़ी होशियारी से इधर उधर झांकता हुआ राजा के पास जाकर बोला, "महाराज, कुछ सुना आपने ?"
"नहीं तो..क्या हुआ ?" राजा चौंके।
"महाराज, क्षमा करें। पहले जान बख्श देने का वचन दें तो कुछ कहूं।"
"जो भी कहना हो, निस्संकोच कहो, डरने की कोई बात नहीं है। राजा ने दरबारी को अभय दान देते हुए कहा।
"महाराज, तेनाली राम पड़ोसी राजा से मिले हुए हैं। वे हमारे पड़ोसी राजा के साथ हमारे सम्बन्ध बिगाड़ना चाहते हैं।"
"क्या बकते हो ?" राजा गरज कर बोले।
दरबारी बोला - "मैं तो पहले ही समझ गया था महाराज। तेनाली राम ने आप के ऊपर ऐसा जादू किया हुआ है कि आप उसकी शिकायत सुन ही नहीं सकते, या यूं कहिए कि तेनाली राम की शिकायत आपके कानों को सहन नहीं होती।"

राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने उस दरबारी से कहा- "तेनाली राम राज्य का सच्चा वफादार है। वह कभी राजद्रोह नहीं कर सकता। तुम्हें कहीं से अवश्य ही गलत सूचना मिली है।"

"महाराज, आपको जितना विश्वास तेनाली राम की सच्चाई पर है, उससे कहीं अधिक विश्वास मुझे अपनी इस सूचना पर है। पूरी तरह जांच व परख करके ही मैंने आप तक यह सूचना पहुंचाई।"

जब उस दरबारी ने खूब जोर देकर अपनी बात कही तो राजा को सोचने पर मजबूर होना पड़ा। राजा ने कहा- "ठीक है, मैं इस बात की जांच करूंगा और अगर तेनाली राम दोषी पाया गया तो उसे अवश्य ही कठोर दण्ड दिया जाएगा।" राजा की इस बात से प्रसन्न होकर दरबारी अपने घर चला गया।

दूसरे दिन कृष्णदेव राय ने तेनाली राम को एकान्त में बुलवाया और बोले, "तेनाली राम, हमें सूचना मिली है कि तुम हमारे शत्रु राजा से मिलकर हमारे विजयनगर राज्य को दूसरे के अधीन कराना चाहते हो।"

तेनाली राम ने जब अपने ऊपर लगाया गया यह आरोप सुना तो वह सिर से पैर तक कांप गए। वह राजा को इस बात का क्या उत्तर दें, यह भी सुझ रहा था।

राजा ने जब तेनाली राम को चुप देखा तो वह क्रोध से भभक उठे और बोले, "तो तुम्हारे चुप रहने का यही अर्थ लगाया जाए कि तुम अपना अपराध स्वीकार करते हो।"
यह सुनकर तेनाली राम की आंखों में आंसू आ गए। वह बोले, "महाराज की बात काटने का साहस न तो मैंने अब तक किया है और न ही कभी भविष्य में कर सकूंगा।"
राजा तो क्रोध से भरे हुए थे। तेनाली राम के इस उत्तर से वे और भी भड़क उठे। बोले, "तुमने जिस पड़ोसी राजा से सांठ-गांठ की है अब उसी के राज्य में जाकर रहो, मेरा राज्य कल ही छोड़ दो।"

"इतने बड़े अपराध की इतना मामूली सजा?" तेनाली राम ने राजा से कहा। "तुम्हारी अब तक की सेवा को देखते हुए, मेरे तुम्हारे मित्रतापूर्ण सम्बन्धों को देखते हुए तथा तुम्हारे पद की गरिमा को देखते हुए मैं तुम्हें इतना ही दण्ड देना उचित समझता हूं। यदि यही अपराध किसी और ने किया होता तो मैं उसकी बोटी-बोटी नुचवा लेता।" राजा ने क्रोध में बिफरते हुए कहा।

तेनाली राम ने राजा का फैसला सुना और अपनी सफाई में एक भी शब्द नहीं कहा। चुपचाप सिर झुकाकर राजा के सामने से चले गए।

दूसरे दिन जब तेनाली राम के विरोधियों ने यह सुना कि तेनाली राम राज्य छोड़कर चला गया है, तो उनकी खुशी की सीमा न रही। वह सब राजा पर अपना प्रभाव बढ़ाने के उपाय सोचने लगे और अपनी पदोन्नति के मंसूबे बांधने लगे। तेनाली राम विजयनगर राज्य के शत्रु राज्य की राजधानी पहुंचे और वहां के राजा से मिले। उन्होंने उस राजा के गुणों का वर्णन छन्दबद्ध करके सुनाया।
राजा अपनी प्रशंसा सुनकर खुशी से झूम उठे। राजा ने तेनाली राम से उसका परिचय पूछा।

तेनाली राम ने अपना परिचय देते हुए कहा, "मैं विजयनगर के राजा कृष्णदेव राय का निजी सचिव तेनाली राम हूं।" उस राजा ने तेनाली राम की बहुत प्रशंसा पहले ही सुन रखी थी, लेकिन तेनाली राम से भेंट का यह पहला अवसर था। उस राजा ने तेनाली राम का भरपूर स्वागत किया। तेनाली राम ने इस स्वागत के लिए राजा को धन्यवाद दिया।

राजा बोले, "तेनाली राम, राजा कृष्णदेव राय हमें अपना शत्रु मानते हैं, फिर भी तुम हमारे दरबार में निडर होकर कैसे चले आए? तुम तो राजा कृष्णदेव राय के निजी सचिव हो। यहां शत्रु के राज्य में तुम्हारा कोई भी अनिष्ट हो सकता है।"

राजा ने हालांकि सच कहा था। फिर भी तेनाली राम ने मुस्करा कर कहा, "राजन् ! आप विद्वान हैं, आपके पास अपार शक्ति है। आप सुयोग्य प्रशासक हैं और प्रजा की भलाई चाहने वाले हैं। बिल्कुल ऐसे ही गुण हमारे महाराज में भी हैं। वे आपको अपना शत्रु नहीं, मित्र मानते हैं। आपकी इसी भ्रान्ति के निवारण के लिए महाराज ने मुझे आपके पास भेजा है।"

"महाराज हमारे दुश्मन नहीं, दोस्त हैं।" आश्चर्य से चौंकते हुए राजा ने बोला, "लेकिन हमारे जासूसों ने तो हमें यह खबर दी थी कि राजा कृष्णदेव राय हमारे राज्य पर हमला करने की तैयारी कर रहे हैं।"

"हां राजन, हमारे गुप्तचरों ने हमारे महाराज से भी यही बात आपके लिए भी कही थी। तभी हमारे महाराज ने मुझे आपके पास भेजा है। युद्ध कभी किसी के लिए लाभकारी हुआ है, जो आप जैसे दो विद्वान् राजाओं को लाभकारी होगा?" तेनाली राम ने कहा।

राजा पर तेनाली राम की बातों का असर हुआ। वह बोले "लड़ाई तो मैं भी नहीं चाहता, लेकिन यह बात साबित कैसे हो कि राजा कृष्णदेव राय सच्चे दिल से सुलह के इच्छुक हैं?"

"आप कल ही कुछ उपहार व सन्धि पत्र देकर अपना एक दूत विजयनगर भेज दें। उस दूत को मैं भी अपना एक पत्र दूंगा। यदि महाराज कृष्णदेव राय आपका उपहार स्वीकार कर लें, तो मित्रता समझी जाए और यदि वे उपहार लौटा दें तो आप मुझे जो चाहें दण्ड दे दें।"

राजा ने कहा, लेकिन यह तो मेरी तरफ से सुलह का पैगाम हुआ। यह तो मेरी हेठी मानी जाएगी। इसपर तेनालीराम ने कहा, "लेकिन सन्धि प्रस्ताव लेकर तो मैं स्वयं आपकी सेवा में उपस्थित हुआ हूं। पहल तो हमारे राज्य की ओर से है।" राजा की समझ में यह बात आ गई।

अगले ही दिन राजा ने अपना एक विशेष दूत कुछ उपहार साथ देकर विजयनगर भेज दिया। उधर राजा कृष्णदेव राय को भी यह पता चल चुका था कि तेनाली राम बेकसूर थे। उनके विरुद्ध दरबारियों ने आपस में मिलकर झूठी चाल चली थी।

इधर जैसे ही शत्रु राजा का दूत बहुमूल्य उपहार लेकर राजा कृष्णदेव राय के पास पहुंचा तो राजा प्रसन्नता से भर उठे। उन्होंने मन ही मन तेनाली राम की बुद्धिमानी की प्रशंसा की और उस दूत के साथ ही, अपना मंत्री भी उस राजा के लिए उपहार देकर भेज दिया। राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने अपना एक विशेष पत्र भी उस राजा के नाम लिखा कि तेनाली राम को तुरन्त वापस भेज दिया जाए।

जब तेनाली राम वापस विजयनगर पहुंचे तो राजा कृष्णदेव राय ने उनका विशेष स्वागत किया और उन्हें ढेरों पुरस्कार दिए। जिन दरबारियों ने तेनाली राम के विरुद्ध षड्यंत्र रचा था, वे दरबारी शर्म से पानी-पानी हो गए।

"Your Majesty, I have more faith in this information than you have in the truth of Tenali Ram. I have passed this information to you only after thorough investigation and testing."

When that courtier spoke with great emphasis, the king was forced to think. The king said- "Okay, I will investigate this matter and if Tenali Rama is found guilty, he will surely be punished severely." Pleased with this, the courtier went to his house.

The next day Krishnadeva Raya summoned Tenali Rama to solitude and said, "Tenali Rama, we have received information that you, together with our enemy king, want to subjugate our Vijayanagara kingdom."

When Tenali Rama heard this allegation against him, he trembled from head to toe. He was also thinking about what answer he should give to the king.

When the king saw Tenali Rama silent, he was furious with anger and said, "Then your silence should be construed as admitting your guilt."

Hearing this, tears welled up in Tenali Rama's eyes. He said, "Neither have I dared to speak of Maharaj till now nor will I be able to do so in future."

The king was full of anger. He was further enraged by this reply of Tenali Rama. He said, "Now go and live in the kingdom of the neighboring king with whom you have colluded, leave my kingdom tomorrow only."

"Such a minor punishment for such a great crime?" Tenali Rama told the king. "Looking at your service so far, in view of my friendly relations with you and in view of the dignity of your position, I consider it appropriate to punish you only. takes." The king said trembling in anger.

Tenali Rama heard the king's verdict and did not say a single word in his explanation. He silently bowed his head and left in front of the king.

The next day when Tenali Rama's opponents heard that Tenali Rama had left the kingdom, their happiness knew no bounds. All of them started thinking of ways to increase their influence on the king and started making plans for their promotion. Tenali Rama reached the capital of the enemy kingdom of Vijayanagara kingdom and met the king there. He narrated the qualities of that king in verse.

The king jumped with joy upon hearing his praise. The king asked Tenali Rama to introduce him.

Tenali Rama introduced himself and said, "I am Tenali Rama, the personal secretary of Krishnadeva Raya, the king of Vijayanagara." That king had already heard a lot of praise for Tenali Rama, but this was the first time he met Tenali Rama. That king gave a warm welcome to Tenali Rama. Tenali Rama thanked the king for this welcome.

The king said, "Tenali Rama, Raja Krishnadeva Raya considers us as his enemy, yet how did you come to our court fearlessly? You are the personal secretary of King Krishnadeva Raya. Here any evil can happen to you in the enemy's kingdom. "

However, the king told the truth. Still, Tenali Rama smiled and said, "Rajan! You are a scholar, you have immense power. You are an able administrator and a well-wisher of the people. "Your Majesty is our friend, not our enemy." Shocked by surprise, the king said, "But our spies had informed us that King Krishnadeva Raya was preparing to attack our kingdom."

"Yes Rajan, our spies told our Maharaj the same thing for you as well. That's when our Maharaj sent me to you. Has war ever been beneficial to anyone, which would be beneficial to two learned kings like you?" Tenali Ram said.

Tenali Rama's words had an effect on the king. He said, "Even I do not want to fight, but how can it be proved that King Krishna Deva Raya is genuinely interested in reconciliation?"

"Tomorrow itself, send a messenger of yours to Vijayanagara by giving some gifts and treaty letters. I will also give a letter of mine to that messenger. If Maharaj Krishnadev Raya accepts your gift, then it is considered friendship and if he returns the gift then you will give me a letter." Punish whoever you want."

Here, as soon as the messenger of the enemy king reached King Krishnadev Raya with a valuable gift, the king was filled with happiness. He praised Tenali Rama's wisdom in his heart and along with that messenger, also sent his minister with a gift for that king. King Krishnadeva Raya also wrote a special letter to that king that Tenali Rama should be sent back immediately.

When Tenali Rama reached back to Vijayanagara, King Krishnadeva Raya gave him a special welcome and gave him many awards. The courtiers who had conspired against Tenali Rama, those courtiers became watery in shame.
