एक समय में राजा कृष्णदेव राय दरबार में बैठे मंत्रियों के साथ विचार विमर्श कर रहे थे। तभी एक व्यक्ति उनके समक्ष आकर कहने लगा - महाराज! मेरे साथ न्याय करें। मेरे मालिक ने मुझे धोखा दिया है। इतना सुनते ही महाराज ने उससे पूछा, तुम कौन हो और तुम्हारे साथ क्या हुआ है? 

व्यक्ति ने कहा - "अन्नदाता मेरा नाम नामदेव है। कल मैं अपने मालिक के साथ किसी काम से एक गांव में जा रहा था। गर्मी की वजह से चलते - चलते हम थक गए और पास ही के एक मंदिर की छाया में बैठकर विश्राम करने लगे। तभी मेरी नजर एक लाल रंग की थैली पर पड़ी, जो कि मंदिर के एक कोने में पड़ी हुई थी। मालिक की आज्ञा लेकर मैंने वह थैली उठा ली। उसको खोलने पर पता चला कि उसके अंदर बेर के आकार के दो हीरे चमक रहे थे। हीरे मंदिर में पाए गए थे, इसलिए उन पर राज्य का अधिकार था। परंतु मेरे मालिक ने मुझसे यह बात किसी को भी बताने से मना किया और कहा कि हम दोनों इसमें से एक - एक हीरे रख लेंगे। मैं अपने मालिक की गुलामी से परेशान था। इसलिए मैं अपना काम करना चाहता था, जिसके कारण मेरे मन में लालच आ गया। हवेली पर आते ही मालिक ने हीरे देने से साफ इनकर कर दिया। यही कारण है कि मुझे इंसाफ चाहिए। "

महाराज ने तुरंत कोतवाल को भेजकर नामदेव के मालिक को महल में पेश होने का आदेश दिया। नामदेव के मालिक को जल्दी राजा के सामने उपस्थित किया गया। राजा ने उससे हीरों के बारे में पूछा, तो वह बोला - महाराज! यह बात सच है कि मंदिर में हीरे मिले थे, लेकिन मैंने वे हीरे नामदेव को देकर उन्हें राजकोष में जमा करने को कहा था। उसके वापस लौटने पर जब मैंने उससे राजकोष की रसीद मांगी, तो वह आनाकानी करने लगा। मैंने जब उसे धमकाया तो यह आपके पास आकर मनगढ़ंत कहानी सुनाने लगा। 

अच्छा तो यह बात है। महाराज ने कुछ सोचते हुए कहा - क्या तुम्हारे पास इस बात का कोई सबूत है कि तुम सच बोल रहे हो? 

अन्नदाता अगर आपको मेरी बात पर यकीन नहीं है, तो आप मेरे दूसरे तीनों नौकरों से पूछ सकते हैं। वह उस वक्त वहीं मौजूद थे। 

उसके बाद तीनों नौकरों को राजा के सामने लाया गया। तीनों ने नामदेव के खिलाफ गवाही दे दी। महाराज तीनों नौकरों और मालिक को वही बिठाकर अपने विश्राम कक्ष में चले गए और सेनापति, तेनालीराम और महामंत्री को भी इस विषय में बात करने के लिए वहां बुलवा लिया। 

उनके पहुंचने पर महाराज ने महामंत्री से पूछा - "आपको क्या लगता है ?क्या नामदेव झूठ बोल रहा है? जी महाराज नामदेव ही झूठा है। उसके मन में लालच आ गया होगा और उसने हीरे अपने पास ही रख लिए होंगे।  सेनापति ने गवाहों को झूठा बताया। उसके हिसाब से नामदेव सच बोल रहा था। तेनालीराम चुपचाप खड़े सबकी बातें सुन रहे थे। 

तब महाराज ने उनकी ओर देखते हुए उनकी राय मांगी। तेनालीराम बोले महाराज कौन झूठा है और कौन सच्चा इस बात का अभी पता लग जाएगा, परंतु आप लोगों को कुछ समय के लिए पर्दे के पीछे जाना होगा। महाराज इस बात से सहमत हो गए, क्योंकि वह जल्द ही इस मसले को सुलझाना चाहते थे। इसीलिए पर्दे के पीछे जाकर छुप गए। महामंत्री और सेनापति भी मुंह सिकोड़ते हुए पर्दे के पीछे चले गए। 

अब विश्राम कक्ष में केवल तेनालीराम ही दिखाई दे रहे थे। अब उन्होंने सेवक से कह कर पहले गवाह को बुलवाया।  गवाह के आने पर तेनालीराम ने पूछा - "क्या तुम्हारे मालिक ने तुम्हारे सामने नामदेव को हीर दिए थे?"

जी हां, गवाह ने कहा।  

फिर तो तुम्हें हीरे के रंग और आकार के बारे में भी पता होगा। तेनालीराम ने एक कागज और कलम गवाह के सामने करते हुए उससे कहा, "यह लो मुझे इस पर हीरे का चित्र बनाकर दिखाओ।" 

इतना सुनते ही उसकी सिट्टी पिट्टी गुल हो गई और वह बोल पड़ा - "मैंने हीरे नहीं देखे, क्योंकि वह लाल रंग की थैली में थे।" 

अच्छा अब चुपचाप वहां जाकर खड़े हो जाओ। अब दूसरे गवाह को बुलाकर उससे भी यही प्रश्न पूछा गया। उसने हीरो के रंग के बारे में बता कर कागज पर दो गोल गोल आकृतियां बनाकर अपनी बात साबित की। फिर उससे भी पहले गवाह के पास खड़ा कर दिया गया। 

अब तीसरे गवाह को बुलाया गया। उसने बताया कि हीरे भोजपत्र की थैली में थे, इस वजह से वह उन्हें देख नहीं पाया। इतना सुनते ही महाराज पर्दे के पीछे से सामने आ गए। महाराज को देखते ही तीनों घबरा गए और समझ गए कि अब सच बोलने में ही उनकी भलाई है। तीनों महाराज के पैरों को पकड़कर माफी मांगने लगे और बोले, "हमें झूठ बोलने के लिए हमारे मालिक ने धमकाया था और नौकरी से निकालने की धमकी दी थी। इसलिए हमें झूठ बोलना पड़ा।"

महाराज ने तुरंत मालिक के घर की तलाशी के आदेश दिए। तलाशी में दोनों हीरे बरामद हुए। सजा के तौर पर मालिक को 10000 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं नामदेव को देनी पड़ी और 20000 स्वर्ण मुद्राएं जुर्माने के तौर पर भरनी पड़ी, जबकि बरामद हुए दोनों हीरे राजकोष में जमा कर दिए गए। इस प्रकार तेनालीराम की मदद से महाराज ने नामदेव के हक में फैसला सुनाया।

At one time King Krishnadeva Raya was discussing with the ministers sitting in the court. Then a person came in front of him and started saying - Maharaj! Do justice to me My boss has cheated me. On hearing this, Maharaj asked him, who are you and what has happened to you?

The person said - "Annadata my name is Namdev. Yesterday I was going with my master to a village for some work. We got tired of walking because of the heat and started resting in the shade of a nearby temple. Then my eyes fell on a red colored bag, which was lying in a corner of the temple. With the permission of the owner, I picked up the bag. On opening it, I found that two plum-shaped diamonds were shining inside it. The diamonds were found in the temple, so they belonged to the state. But my master forbade me to tell this to anyone and said that both of us will keep one diamond from it. I am from my master's slavery. Was upset. So I wanted to do my job, due to which I got greedy. On coming to the mansion, the owner flatly refused to give the diamonds. That's why I want justice."

Maharaj immediately sent the Kotwal and ordered the owner of Namdev to appear in the palace. Namdev's master was quickly presented before the king. When the king asked him about diamonds, he said - Maharaj! It is true that diamonds were found in the temple, but I gave those diamonds to Namdev and asked him to deposit them in the treasury. On his return, when I asked him for the receipt of the treasury, he refused. When I threatened him, he came to you and started telling a concocted story.

Well that's it. Thinking something, Maharaj said - Do you have any proof that you are telling the truth?

Annadata If you don't believe me, you can ask my other three servants. He was present there at that time.

After that the three servants were brought before the king. All three testified against Namdev. The Maharaja made the three servants and the master sit there and went to his rest room and called the commander, Tenaliram and the general secretary there to talk about this matter.

On their arrival, Maharaj asked the General Secretary - "What do you think? Is Namdev lying? Ji Maharaj Namdev is a liar. Greed must have come in his mind and he must have kept the diamonds with him. The commander took the witnesses. Told a liar. According to him, Namdev was telling the truth. Tenaliram was standing silently listening to everyone.

Then the Maharaj, looking at him, asked for his opinion. Tenaliram said, who is a liar and who is true, it will be known now, but you people will have to go behind the scenes for some time. Maharaj agreed to this, as he wanted to settle the matter soon. That's why he hid behind the curtain. The General Secretary and the Commander also went behind the curtain shrinking their faces.

Now only Tenaliram was visible in the rest room. Now he called the first witness after asking the servant. On the arrival of the witness, Tenaliram asked - "Did your master give diamonds to Namdev in front of you?"

Yes, said the witness.

Then you will also know about the color and shape of the diamond. Tenalirama put a paper and a pen in front of the witness and said to him, "Take this and show me a picture of a diamond on it."

Upon hearing this, his whistle blew and he said - "I did not see the diamonds, because they were in a red bag."

Well now go and stand there quietly. Now another witness was called and the same question was asked to him. He proved his point by telling about the color of the hero by drawing two round circular figures on the paper. Then even before that he was made to stand before the witness.

Now the third witness was called. He told that the diamonds were in the bag of bhojpatra, due to which he could not see them. On hearing this, Maharaj came in front from behind the curtain. On seeing the Maharaj, all three got scared and understood that now it is better for them to speak the truth. The trio grabbed Maharaj's feet and apologized and said, "We were threatened by our boss for lying and threatened to be fired. That's why we had to lie."

Maharaj immediately ordered a search of the owner's house. During the search both the diamonds were recovered. As punishment, the owner had to pay 10000 gold coins to Namdev and 20000 gold coins as fine, while both the diamonds recovered were deposited in the treasury. Thus, with the help of Tenaliram, the Maharaja pronounced the verdict in favor of Namdev.
