दरबारी कार्यवाही के मध्य बादशाह अकबर ने दरबारियों से एक प्रश्न पूछा, प्रश्न था: "बचाव के लिए सबसे अच्छा शास्त्र कौन सा है?"

बारी बारी से सारे दरबारियों ने इस प्रश्न का उत्तर दिया। किसी ने तलवार कहा, तो किसी ने भाला, किसी ने तीर कमान कहा, तो किसी ने चाकू। जब बीरबल की बारी आई तो वह बोला- "जाहापना! मेरे विचार से मुसीबत के समय में जो हाथ में हो वह सबसे अच्छा शस्त्र होता है।"

बीरबल का उत्तर सुन दरबारी उसका मजाक उड़ाने लगे। अकबर भी उसके उत्तर से संतुष्ट नहीं हुए।

बीरबल उस दिन तो अपमान का घूंट पीकर रह गया, लेकिन अपनी बात सही साबित करने का मौका बहुत जल्द उसके हाथ लग गया।

बादशाह अकबर अकबर भेष बदलकर नगर भ्रमण पर निकला करते थे। बीरबल भी उनके साथ ही हुआ करते थे।एक दिन इसी तरह वे दोनों नगर भ्रमण पर निकले।

एक तंग गली से पैदल गुजर रहे थे। तभी एक मतवाला हाथी उस गली में आ गया। उस हाथी को देखकर अकबर डर गए। उस समय उनके पास एक तलवार थी, लेकिन इतने बड़े हाथी के सामने वह किसी काम की नहीं थी। उन्हें अपने बचाव का कोई रास्ता नहीं सूझ रहा था। गली इतनी तंग थी कि वहां से भाग पाना लगभग नामुमकिन था।

उस गली में एक किनारे पर एक छोटा सा पिल्ला बैठा हुआ था।जब बीरबल की नजर उस पर पड़ी, तो उसने उसे उठाया और हाथी के ऊपर फेंक दिया।

इस तरह हाथी के ऊपर उछाल दिए जाने पर पिल्ला डर गया। उसने हाथी की सूंड को कसकर पकड़ लिया। पर हाथी भी घबरा गया और अपनी सुन झटकने लगा। हाथी के सूंडसोने से फिसलने लगा और स्वयं को गिरने से बचाने के लिए उसने अपने पंजे और दांत हाथी की सूंड में गड़ा दिए। हाथी बिलबिला उठा और सुन को झटक ते हुए पलटकर गली से बाहर भागने लगा।

हाथी के गली से बाहर भागने पर अकबर को चैन आया। पसीने से पूछते हुए जब उन्होंने बीरबल को देखा तो बीरबल मुस्कुरा रहे थे। वे बीरबल की मुस्कुराहट का अर्थ समझ नहीं पाए और पूछ बैठे, "बीरबल! ऐसी संकट की घड़ी में तुम मुस्कुरा रहे हो?"

बीरबल बोले, "जहांपना! मुसीबत की इस घड़ी में छोटा सा पिल्ला हमारा शस्त्र बना और हमारी रक्षा की। इस घटना से आपको अवश्य यकीन हो गया होगा कि मुसीबत में जो हाथ में हो वही सबसे अच्छा शास्त्र होता है।"

अकबर ने भी मुस्कुराते हुए हामी भरी और बोले, "बीरबल तुम सही थे, उस प्रश्न का सही उत्तर देने के साथ आज हमारी रक्षा करने के लिए भी तुम पुरस्कार के पात्र हो।"

During the court proceedings, Emperor Akbar asked the court a question: "Which is the best weapon for rescue?"

In turn, all the courtiers answered this question. Some called a sword, some a spear, some an arrow command, and some a knife. When Birbal's turn came, he said - "My lord! I think in the time of trouble, the thing that is in your hands is the best weapon."

The courtiers heard Birbal's answer and started making fun of him. Akbar too was not satisfied with his answer.

Birbal accepted his dishonor on that day, but soon he got a chance to prove his point right.

Emperor Akbar used to go out on a city tour in disguise. Birbal used to be with them as well. One day they both went on a city tour.

They were walking through a narrow street. Then a elephant arrived in that street. Akbar got scared seeing that elephant. At that time he had a sword, but it was of no use in front of such a big elephant. They could not think of any way to save themselves. The street was so tight that it was almost impossible to escape from there.

A small puppy was sitting on one side of the street. When Birbal caught sight of him, he picked him up and threw him over the elephant.

In this way, the puppy got scared when the elephant was pounced on it. He caught the elephant's trunk tightly. But the elephant also got nervous and started shaking his trunk. The puppy started sliding from the trunk and he buried his claws and teeth in the trunk of the elephant to save himself from falling. The elephant turned to look and started running out of the street.

Akbar was relieved when the elephant ran out of the street. Asked with sweat, Birbal was smiling when he saw Birbal. He could not understand the meaning of Birbal's smile and sat asking, "Birbal! You are smiling in such a crisis?"

Birbal said, " My lord! In this hour of trouble, a small puppy became our weapon and protected us. You must have been convinced by this incident that what is in hand in trouble is the best scripture."

Akbar also smiled and said, "Birbal, you were right, with the right answer to that question, you deserve the award for protecting us today."
