 उल्लू एक ऐसा पक्षी है जो दिखने में डरावना दिखता है और साथ ही या पक्षी एक खतरनाक पक्षी भी है। उल्लू को अधिकतर लोग बेवकूफ समझते हैं। लेकिन उल्लू एक चालाक पक्षी है। वैसे तो माना जाता है कि उल्लू को केवल रात में ही दिखाई देता है, लेकिन यह बात पूरी तरीके से सही नहीं है क्योंकि उल्लू को दिन में भी दिखाई देता है लेकिन रात में इनकी आंखे दिन की अपेक्षा कई गुना ज्यादा संवेदनशील हो जाती हैं जिसकी वजह से रात को इनको ज्यादा दिखाई देता है। यह तो सभी जानते हैं कि उल्लू दिन में नहीं बल्कि रात में जागते हैं।

आइए उल्लू के बारे में कुछ रोचक तथ्य जानते हैं-

• हिंदू धर्म में देवी लक्ष्मी जी का वाहन उल्लू है। 

• उल्लू अंटार्टिका को छोड़कर बाकी पूरी दुनिया में पाया जाता है।
• उल्लू एकलौता ऐसा पक्षी है जो नीले रंग को देख सकता है।
•  इस दुनिया में उल्लू की कम से कम 200 से भी ज्यादा प्रजातियां मौजूद है।
• उल्लू 1 साल में हजार चूहे खा जाता है।
• उल्लू एकमात्र ऐसा पक्षी है जो बिना हिले अपनी गर्दन को 270 डिग्री तक घुमा सकता है।
• पृथ्वी पर सबसे बड़े उल्लू का नाम Great Horned है। उसका वजन ढाई किलो तक है तथा उसके पंख 5 फीट लंबे है।

• अगर उल्लू की सुनने की क्षमता को देखें तो उल्लू इंसानों से 10 गुना ज्यादा धीमी आवाज को भी सुन सकते हैं। 
• पृथ्वी पर छह करोड़ साल पुराने उल्लू के जीवाश्म पाए गए हैं।
• उल्लू की आंखें इसके दिमाग जितनी बड़ी होती हैं तथा उल्लू की आंखें हिलती नहीं हैं।
•  पृथ्वी पर सबसे छोटे उल्लू का नाम ELF है। उसका वजन 31 ग्राम है तथा उसकी लंबाई 5 इंच है.

• उल्लू लंबाई, चौड़ाई और ऊंचाई तीनों देख सकता है। यानी कि यह किसी भी वस्तु का 3d image देख सकता है।
• उल्लू लगभग 30 साल तक जीते हैं।
•  इनके दांत नहीं होते इसलिए यह खाना चबाते नहीं, बल्कि सीधे निगल जाते हैं।

• उल्लू उड़ते समय बिल्कुल भी आवाज नहीं करते हैं क्योंकि इनके पंख का ऊपरी हिस्सा एक मुलायम छाल से बना होता है जो आवाज को अपने सोख लेते हैं और इसके पंख हवा को अपने अंदर से गुजरने देते हैं तो हवा टकराती नहीं है और कोई आवाज नहीं होती है।

• उल्लू का उपयोग बहुत जगह होता है। जैसे इसके सिर के ऊपर की छाल काला जादू में इस्तेमाल की जाती है और इसके शरीर के कई अंग दवाई बनाने में भी काम आते हैं।
• नर उल्लू मादा उल्लू से छोटा होता है।
