उल्लू का राज्याभिषेख 

कौवों और उल्लूओं की शत्रुता बहुत पुरानी है, परंतु यह शत्रुता क्यों है और यह कितनी पुरानी है इसका विचार कम ही लोगों ने किया।

बौद्ध परंपरा में कौवा और उल्लू की शत्रुता के वैमनस्य की एक कथा प्रचलित है। आज वही कथा आपके समक्ष प्रस्तुत है। 

संबोधि प्राप्त करने के बाद जब बुद्ध श्रावस्ती स्थित जेतवन में विहार कर रहे थे, तो उनके अनुयायियों ने उन्हें उल्लूओं द्वारा अनेक कौवों की संहार की सूचना दी। तब बुद्ध ने यह कथा सुनाई थी।

सृष्टि के प्रथम निर्माण चक्र के तुरंत बाद मनुष्यों ने एक सर्वगुण संपन्न पुरुष को अपना अधिपति बनाया। जानवरों ने सिंह को तथा मछलियों ने आनंद नाम के एक विशाल मत्स्य को अपना राजा चुना। इससे प्रेरित होकर पक्षियों ने भी सभा की और उल्लू को भारी मत से राजा बनाने का प्रस्ताव रखा। राज्याभिषेक के ठीक पूर्व पक्षियों ने दो बार घोषणा की कि उल्लू उनका राजा है, किंतु अभिषेक के ठीक पूर्व जब तीसरी बार घोषणा करने जा रहे थे,

 तो कौवों ने कांव-कांव कर उनकी घोषणा का विरोध किया और कहा क्यों ऐसे पक्षी को राजा बनाया जा रहा है जो देखने से क्रोधी प्रवृत्ति का है और जिनकी एक वक्र दृष्टि से ही लोग गर्म हांड़ी में रखे तिल की तरह फूटने लगते हैं। कौवों के इस विरोध को उल्लू सहन ना कर सका और उसी समय वह उसे मारने के लिए झपटा और उसके पीछे - पीछे भागने लगा। तब पक्षियों ने भी सोचा कि उल्लू राजा बनने के योग्य नहीं था। क्योंकि वह अपने क्रोध को नियंत्रित नहीं कर सकता था। अतः उन्होंने हंस को अपना राजा बनाया। 

किंतु उल्लू और कौवों की शत्रुता तभी से आज तक चलती आ रही है।

 Coronation of Owl

The animosity of ravens and owls is very old, but few people have considered why this enmity is there and how old it is. There is a legend in Buddhist tradition of hostility to crow and owl.  Today the same story is presented to you.

 After attaining enlightenment, when the Buddha was making a monastery at Jetavan at Shravasti, his followers informed him of the killing of many crows by owls.  Then Buddha told this story.

 Immediately after the first creation cycle of the world, humans made a virtuous man their suzerainty.  The animals chose the lion and the fishes chose a huge fish named Anand as their king.  Inspired by this, the birds also gathered and proposed to make the owl a king with a heavy vote.  Just before the coronation, the birds announced twice that the owl was their king, but just before the consecration was going to announce for the third time, the ravens protested against their declaration, and asked why such a bird was made king.  It is going to be indignant from the point of view and from whose point of view, people start bursting like a mole placed in a hot handi. 

 The owl could not bear this opposition of the crows and at the same time he pounced to kill him and started running after him.  Then the birds also thought that the owl was not fit to be king. 

 Because he could not control his anger. So they made Hans their king. But the hostility of owls and crows has been going on since then.
