चोर की दाढ़ी में तिनका

बादशाह अकबर बीरबल से अक्सर अजीब सवाल तो पूछते ही थे। और समय समय पर बीरबल की बुद्धिमत्ता का परीक्षण भी करते रहते थे। एक दिन एक कारीगर हीरे की अंगूठी लेकर आता है। राजा और मंत्री को दिखते हुए अंगूठी गिर जाती है, जिसे कारीगर ही ढूंढ के देता है। इसपर राजा उसकी तारीफ करते हुए कहते हैं " मुझे यह देखकर ख़ुशी हुई की तुम्हारी बूढ़ी आँखों ने अंगूठी ढूंढ ली जिसे मेरे जवान दरबारी ना ढूंढ पाए। "इसपर कारीगर ने कहा मेरी आँखों से कुछ नहीं छुप सकता। राजा अकबर ने कहा अच्छा तुम बीरबल की तरह हो। तो कारीगर कहता है " क्षमा करें जहाँपनाह बीरबल भी होता तो नाकामयाब होता।" तब अकबर ने कहा चलो इसे आजमाते हैं। उन्होंने अपनी बेशकीमती अंगूठी छिपाकर एक मंत्री को दे दी और जब बीरबल आए तो बादशाह ने कहा, 'आज हमारी अंगूठी खो गई है। बेगम ने मुझे तोहफे में दी थी।

बीरबल ने पूछा - बीरबल ने बादशाह से उस जगह का पता पूछा, जहां उन्होंने अंगूठी खोई थी, महाराज अंगूठी कब और कहाँ खोई। अकबर बोले यही कहीं दरबार में।तुम सवाल पूछना छोड़ो, अंगूठी का पता लगाओ। दरबारियों के चेहरे पर ख़ुशी देख बीरबल समझ गए कि कुछ गड़बड़ है। बीरबल कुछ देर बुदबुदाए और कुछ देर बाद बादशाह की तरफ देखकर कहा, "जहाँपनाह मेरे जादू के मंत्रो ने बता दिया है कि अंगूठी किसके पास है।जिसके पास अंगूठी है, उसकी दाढ़ी में तिनका है।"

बीरबल की बात जब पास बैठे मंत्री (जिन्हें बादशाह ने अंगूठी दी थी) ने सुनी तो वह घबराकर अपनी दाढ़ी टटोलने लगे। बीरबल पहले से ही चौकन्ने थे। मंत्री की हरकत उनसे छिपी न रह सकी। बीरबल ने फौरन मंत्री की ओर इशारा कर कहा, 'जहांपनाह, आपकी अंगूठी इन्होंने ही चुराई है।' चूंकि बादशाह पहले से यह बात जानते थे, इसलिए उन्होंने मंत्री को माफ करने का नाटक किया। साथ ही, बीरबल की चतुराई पर उन्हें शाबासी भी दी।

You should stop asking questions, find out the ring. Seeing happiness on the faces of the courtiers, Birbal understood that something was wrong. Birbal muttered for a while and after a while looked at the emperor and said, "Whereupon my magic spells have told who has the ring. Who has the ring, his beard has a straw."

When the minister (who was given the ring by the emperor) heard Birbal, he panicked and began to shave his beard. Birbal was already alert. The minister's actions could not be hidden from him. Birbal immediately pointed to the minister and said, "Jahanpanah, he has stolen your ring." Since the emperor already knew this, he pretended to forgive the minister. At the same time, Birbal also courted him for his cleverness.
