निग्रोधराज मृग के बलिदान की कथा

वाराणसी के वनों में कभी एक स्वर्ण मृग रहता था। उसकी आंखें रत्न सी चमकीली, सींग रजत की कांति लिए हुए तथा उसका शरीर अन्य हिरणों से अधिक बड़ा और सुंदर था। वह 500 मृगों का राजा था और उसे निग्रोधराज के नाम से पुकारा जाता था। उसी वन में उसी के सदृश्य एक और हिरण रहता था। वह भी 500 मृगों का राजा था। उसका नाम साखा था।

उन दिनों वाराणसी नरेश को हिरण का मांस बहुत प्रिय था। हर रोज उसे हिरण के मांस के नए - नए व्यंजन खाने का शौक था। राजा के अनुचर इससे बहुत परेशान रहते थे, क्योंकि हिरण बड़े चौकन्ना और बड़ी तेज चौकड़िया भर क्षण भर में आंखों से ओझल हो जाते थे। अतः एक दिन राजा के आदमियों ने प्रतिदिन हिरण के पीछे ना भागने का एक निदान ढूंढ निकाला। उन लोगों ने वन से नगर को जाने वाली एक पगडंडी को छोड़ सारे को चारों तरफ से घेर लिया और ढोल बाजे के साथ वन केंद्र को बढ़ने लगे। तब सारे मृग नगर को जाने वाली पगडंडी से होते हुए राजा की एक उद्यान में इकट्ठे हो गए। जैसे ही सारे मृग उद्यान में पहुंचे लोगों ने उद्यान का द्वार बंद कर लिया। उन्हीं मृगों के बीच दो स्वर्ण मृग भी थे। राजा ने जब उनकी चर्चा सुनी तो स्वयं भी वह उन्हें देखने आया तथा उनकी विशिष्टता के कारण उन्हें प्राण दान दे दिया।

उस दिन के पश्चात जब भी राजा के अनुचर किसी हिरण को मारने आते तो उनके आगमन से डरकर हिरन जहां तहां भाग दौड़ करने लगते, जिसके कारण एक हिरण के स्थान पर अनेक हिरण मारे जाते तथा घायल हो जाते। इस आपदा से बचने के लिए हिरणों ने एक सभा की और तय किया कि प्रतिदिन एक हिरण राजा के घात स्थान पर स्वयं जाकर अपना बलिदान करेगा। राजा के अनुचरों को भी हिरणों के सहयोग से प्रसन्नता हुई और वे केवल आए हुए वध्य हिरण के ही प्राण हरते थे।

एक दिन एक मादा हिरण की बारी आई। उसके पेट में एक नन्हा हिरण पल रहा था। चूंकि वह साखा हिरण की झुंड में रहती थी, इसलिए वह अपने राजा के पास जाकर अपने बदले किसी और को भेजने की प्रार्थना करने लगी। साखा हिरण ने उसकी बात को यह कहते हुए ठुकरा दिया कि कानून में परिवर्तन संभव नहीं है। रोती बिलखती वह हिरणी फिर निग्रोधराज के पास पहुंची और उसके सामने भी अपनी प्रार्थना दोहरायी। निग्रोधराज ने तब उसकी सहायता के लिए अपने प्राणों की बलि देना उचित समझा।

अगले दिन जब राजा के अनुचरों ने बध्य स्थान पर एक स्वर्ण मृग को मरने के लिए तैयार खड़ा पाया तो उक्त घटना की सूचना तत्काल राजा को पहुंचाई। प्राण दान पाकर भी व हिरण क्यों मृत्यु के लिए तत्पर था, इसका कारण राजा ने जानना चाहा। इसलिए उसने तत्काल घटनास्थल पर पहुंचकर निग्रोधराज से उसकी मृत्यु की तत्परता का कारण जानना चाहा। नीग्रोधराज ने तब उसे गर्भिणी हिरण की कथा सुनाई। जिसे सुनकर राजा ने उसके साथ उस गर्भवती हिरणी को भी अभय दान दिया। नीग्रोधराज ने फिर अन्य हिरणों के विषय में पूछा कि उनके प्राणों के लिए राजा क्या करना चाहेंगे। राजा ने तब कहा -"उन्हें भी प्राण दान प्राप्त होगा।" निग्रोधराज ने पूछा- "शेष जानवरों के प्राणों का क्या होगा? राजा ने कहा, "उन्हें भी जीवनदान मिलेगा।" मृग ने फिर पंछी और जलचरों के प्राणों के विषय में भी पूछा। राजा ने तब अपने राज्य में रहने वाले समस्त पक्षी और मत्स्य आदि की अवध्यता की घोषणा कर दी और जब तक वह राजा जीवित रहा उसके राज्य में किसी भी जीव जंतु की हत्या नहीं हुई।

Story of Nigrodhraj deer sacrifice

There was once a golden deer in the forests of Varanasi. His eyes were shining like gems, horns were of silver, and his body was bigger and more beautiful than other deer. He was the king of 500 deer and was called as Nigrodhraj. Another deer lived in the same forest as him. He was also the king of 500 antelopes. His name was Sakha.

The king of Varanasi loved deer meat in those days. Every day he was fond of eating new dishes of deer meat. The king's followers were very much disturbed by this, because the deer used to vanish from his eyes for a moment with great vigil and a very sharp watch. So one day the king's men found a solution to not run after the deer every day. They surrounded all of them, leaving a footpath leading from the forest to the city and started growing the forest center with drums. Then all the deer gathered in a garden of the king through the footpath leading to the city. As soon as all the antlers reached the park, the people closed the garden gate. There were also two golden antelopes among those deer. When the king heard their discussion, he himself came to see him and donated his life because of his uniqueness.

After that day, whenever the king's attendants came to kill a deer, the deer, fearing their arrival, would run to where they were, due to which many deer would be killed and injured in place of one deer. To avoid this disaster, the deer held a meeting and decided that every day a deer would go to the ambush of the king and sacrifice himself. The king's servants were also pleased with the support of the deer and they used to kill only the deer that came.

One day a female deer came. A small deer was growing in his stomach. Since she lived in the herd of sakha deer, she went to her king and prayed to send someone else instead. Sakha Deer rejected her saying that change in law is not possible. The hirni weeping again came to Nigrodhraj and repeated his prayer in front of him. Nigrodhraj then thought it appropriate to sacrifice his life to help him.

The next day, when the king's servants found a golden deer standing ready to die at the point of reference, the news of the incident was immediately conveyed to the king. The king wanted to know the reason why the deer was ready for death even after receiving his life. So he immediately reached the spot and asked Nigrodhraj to know the reason for his readiness for his death. Nigrodhraj then told him the story of the conceited deer. Upon hearing this, the king also donated the abbey to that pregnant Hirani with him. Nigrodhraj then asked about the other deer what the king would like to do for his life. The king then said - "They too will receive life donation." Nigrodhraj asked- "What will happen to the lives of the remaining animals?" The king said, "They will also get life." The deer then asked about birds and aquatic creatures. The king then asked all the birds and fish that live in his kingdom. He declared the avidity of Adi, and as long as that king was alive, no living creatures were killed in his kingdom.
