सोमदंत

हिमालय के वन में निवास करते एक सन्यासी ने हाथी के एक बच्चे को अकेला पाया। उसे उस बच्चे पर दया आई और वह उसे अपनी कुटिया में ले आया। कुछ ही दिनों में उसे उस बच्चे से बहुत मोह हो गया और वह बड़े ममत्व से अपने बच्चे की तरह उसका पालन पोषण करने लगा। प्यार से वह उसे "सोमदंत" पुकारने लगा और उसके खानपान के लिए प्रचार सामग्री जुटा लेता था।

एक दिन जब सन्यासी कुटिया से बाहर गया हुआ था, तो सोमदन्त ने अकेले में खूब खाना खाया। तरह-तरह के फलों के स्वाद में उसने यह भी नहीं जाना कि उसे कितना खाना चाहिए। वहां कोई उसे रोकने वाला भी नहीं था। वह तब तक खाता ही चला गया जब तक उसका पेट ना फट गया। फिर पेट फटने के तुरंत बाद ही उसकी मृत्यु हो गई।

शाम को जब वह सन्यासी वापस कुटिया आया तो उसने वहां सोमदन्त को मृत पाया। सोमदन्त के वियोग में वह असह्य हो गया। उसके दुःख की सीमा न रही। वह जोर - जोर से रोने बिलखने भी लगा। वह सोमदन्त से वियोग सहन नहीं कर पा रहा था। सक्क ( इंद्र ) ने जब उस जैसे सन्यासी को रोते - बिलखते बहुत ही बुरी हालत में देखा तो वह उसे समझाने नीचे आए।

सक्क ने कहा - "हे सन्यासी! तुम एक धनी गृहस्थ थे, मगर संसार के मोह - माया को त्याग तुम आज एक सन्यासी बन चुके हो। क्या संसार और संसार के प्रति तुम्हारा मोह उचित है?"

सक्क के प्रश्न का उत्तर उस सन्यासी के पास नहीं था। उसे तत्काल ही अपनी मूर्खता और मोह का ज्ञान हो गया। वह खुद को सँभालते हुए मृत सोमदंत के लिए उसने विलाप करना बंद कर दिया।

Somdant

A monk living in the Himalayan forest found an elephant child alone. He took pity on the child and brought her to his hut. In a few days, he became very fascinated with that child and he began to nurture her like a child with great affection. Out of love, he called her "Somdanta" and collected promotional material for her food.

One day when a monk went out of the hut, Somdanta ate a lot of food in private. He did not even know how much he needed to eat in the taste of various fruits. There was no one to stop him there. He went on eating till his stomach burst. Then he died soon after the stomach burst.

When the monk came back to the hut in the evening, he found Somdanta dead there. He became unbearable during Somdant's disconnection. There is no limit to his grief. He also started crying loudly. He was unable to tolerate disconnection from Somdant. When Sakka (Indra) saw a monk like that crying - in a very bad condition, he came down to explain it.

Sakka said - "O Sannyasi! You were a rich householder, but renounced the fascination of the world. You have become a monk today. Is your attachment to the world and the world justified?"

The monk did not have the answer to Sakka's question. He immediately became aware of his foolishness and fascination. He stopped mourning for the dead Somdant, while he was self-sustaining.
